Article: Keys to 2019: Buxton’s Emergence
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This apparently has become a Twins mantra in some parts. I'm like everyone else; I'm all in on the Buxton we briefly saw in the latter half of 2017. However, and not to be a naysayer, if our entire success or failure rests on the shoulders on Buxton, I think that only intensifies his own personal struggles, which might not be such a good thing, since his troubles seem to be mental struggles as much as physical ones. Maybe the approach should be precisely the opposite; i.e., let's not count on Buxton for anything and let's see how things go. I have a completely different view of this picture. I don't think it is the case that the fate of the Twins rests entirely on the shoulders of BB. Cave has shown himself to be a decent player and can fill the role of CF if he needs to do it again. I am far more concerned about the pitching rotation. It looks shaky at best, but even that isn't a death blow at this point. That is to say, a lot of Twins will have to produce if the organization is to have a successful 2019 campaign. I hope one of them is Buxton, but he isn't Atlas--he needs lots of others to lift their corners of world as well.- 42 replies

Things happen during seasons that are unexpected. The 1987 team was hardly a juggernaut on paper. The Twins grabbed a playoff spot only because they were only slightly less awful than the Royals, and Detroit was going to clean their clocks in the opening round. (I even remember Brent Musburger saying that the series would now go to four games instead of three--because the Tigers had lost the opener--assuming that the Twins would lose three straight.) We all know what happened. Sure, I'd love the Twins to spend more, but with the signing of Cruz, I think the Twins become a much more fun team to watch...and who knows, one of those players may emerge and have a big year.

Article: Patrick Mahomes Career Retrospective
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
PS-Like many others on the list, perhaps the reason I somewhat abandoned pro football was because of the Vikings' miserable play on the big stage... especially when they are supposed to win (like when the Bears have nothing to play for so it should be a good tune-up for the Vikings' playoff start...). -
Article: Patrick Mahomes Career Retrospective
Aerodeliria replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Of course, I remember both Mahomes, but my best memories of Patrick Mahomes are when my OSU Cowboys took out his Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2015 and in 2016. The teams scored over 200 points combined in those two games! (The first game I'll likely never forget because TT scored the first 21 points in the game only to give up 10 touchdowns to the Cowboys. Final: 70-53.) With that said, I am happy to support Big 12 players once they become pros, so I hope Mahomes just keeps chucking TDs and I hope the Vikings get Mason Rudolph away from Pittsburgh (although when comes to football, I prefer the Big 12 over the pros). -

I agree that Kepler is a more reasonable comparison due to the strikeouts vs. walks. Interesting, Buxton was able to draw 76 walks back in 2013 in AA ball. The 105 Ks don't seem particularly troubling in light of the free passes. Perhaps in this Rocco world, he can revisit a bit more patience, bunt a lot more and just try to put the ball in play with two strikes. It's a pity he has been striking out as much as he has, as a walk or bunt single would essentially be a double with his speed

Article: Nine Innings With Seth

Astudillo's bat is far too valuable not to be in the Twins line-up or as an off the bench pinch hitter. The guy just never strikes out....... or walks.- 23 replies

I guess this posting will suffice to express my sincere gratitude for the brain trust at Twins Daily version 2018. I appreciate the yeoman's effort to offer up interesting opinions, relevant articles and fact-filled profiles of players throughout the Twins organization. Although I'm still a greenhorn on this list, I think I've gained a ton of insight from the blog, so thank you for 2018 and here's looking forward with anticipation to 2019.

PS-I believe the addition of Cruz can be a significant factor towards helping these two young hitters progress. Three cheers to the Twins for going after Cruz.

It's an interesting venture and one which naturally generates much discussion. I won't argue with most of the selections but do think that Buxton is too high. As was previously mentioned, I'd have him placed somewhere near Sano. If we think about the physical attributes and the talent potential of both players, we could arguably place them both in the top three or four; however, their problems seem to be related to their mental strength and confidence. Suggestions on how to improve at the plate, on various approaches to hitting and on various tweaks can be useful but only to a point. Once the hitter is standing in the box, their mental approach becomes the deciding factor as to how they will perform. I am hoping against hope that Rocco can cut through the fog and get these two 'stars' to start performing at a level nearer to their potential. Nevertheless, with that said, I feel that this is a much bigger task than just saying, "Let's go back to 2017."

I have no problem with putting Sano at #14; but next year at this time, if he gets himself healthy, happy and hitworthy (if it hasn't been coined, I'll take it) he could move to #3 or #4, but that is only if he becomes Nelson Cruz Junior. On the other hand even if he is healthy and isn't "transformed," he could also become Joey Gallo Junior, and for a team like the Twins, the Joey Gallo's of the world don't have much value.

Article: What You Need To Know About Nelson Cruz
Aerodeliria replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"...the entire Twins lineup could stand to benefit from his knowledge." Yes, indeed; you've put it admirably. The off-season has suddenly become interesting. This is the one signing I thought the Twins had to try to make. I would love to see a game with Nelson Cruz in a Twins uniform. PS-The other super secret benefit he provides is that the Twins no longer have to face him. He has torn up the Twins pretty well over the years: AB: 257 BA: .300 RBI: 48 BB: 13 HR: 20 SLG: .626 OBP: .347 OPS: .923 [*_*] -
Article: Kicking the Tires on Kikuchi

The problem with Nishi is that they based everything on one year. He was a mediocre hitter except for the one outlier. Kikuchi has a track record. -
Article: Kicking the Tires on Kikuchi
Aerodeliria replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have seen Kikuchi pitch this year (he had some shoulder issues at the start of the year, which may have contributed to his less-than-stellar numbers by his own standards). The one game I watched he was basically unhittable (he gave up a scratch single in the 7th or 8th inning as I recall). The other game he seemed a bit off. Like most Japanese pitchers, he uses junk (i.e., splitter) to offset his fastball. His ERA was up this year from previous years, but in 2017, I thought he was the best pitcher in the league even though he didn't win the Eiji Sawamura Award (the Japanese equivalent to the Cy Young). If he returned to 2017 form, he would be a very good catch. Another benefit is that he (like most Japanese starters) is used to putting in a lot of innings. He gives up less than one home run per nine innings; that number would likely be elevated in the US, but not significantly IMHO (Japanese parks are more favorable to hitters). IMHO, his demeanor seems more like Matsuzaka than Tanaka or Ohtani--neither that kind of smoldering fire that Tanaka shows nor that happy go lucky attitude of Ohtani--somewhere between the two, but very, very competitive. Of course, I want the Twins to have a Japanese player and Kikuchi is another chance for that to happen (partly because of my own self-interest--here in Japan, the Twins only appear on TV when they are facing Japanese pitchers like Ohtani or Tanaka). In 2018, I watched maybe a dozen Angels' games and probably two or three Yankees' games and I think one Cubs' game, essentially meaning that I watched three Twins' games. I think it highly unlikely that the Twins could land him, but why not try? -
Who is Robinson? I must have blacked out for a few years. I don't remember any left fielder named Robinson. Does he mean Allison?

Article: Rundown: Cruz, Cahill, Soria and Ramos
Aerodeliria replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I know that some folks won't dig the argument, but it would be nice to have a veteran presence like Cruz around to kind of keep things in perspective so to speak. I mean he is a guy with a real resume and not just a one year he did blah blah blah blah. I recall with great fondness when the 87 Twins grabbed Don Baylor from the scrap yard. His presence was a big plus--not to mention his huge home run in game five of the World Series.- 100 replies

Article: Twins Sign 2B Jonathan Schoop

I agree with Nick here. I don't hate the signing but I think that the Twins really need a player in the heart of the lineup who will happily take BBs. -
Article: Twins Sign Infielder Ronald Torreyes
Aerodeliria replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
100 ABs last year and only 2 walks, that's why his BA of .281 is not very impressive (.291 OBP). IDK, it just seems like there isn't much upside here.
