  1. I checked the past 3 years, a player in low A being drafted is exceedingly rare and in fact there's only been one player from that level who's managed to stick in the past 3 years, even he was a RP. Lendy Castillo Minor League Statistics & History - Baseball-Reference.com Lots of AA/AAA players drafted, very few below there. I think teams realize the amount of development lost due to players, especially hitters, being overmatched by large jumps from A ball just isn't worth it. Since Kepler is a corner player a team couldn't even justify it on the basis of defense. I'd leave him unprotected, the risk just isn't that high imo.
  2. 1998 was worse. At least in 1999 you had youth and future upside to look forward to, in 1998 the team was both old and bad, not an exciting combination. It was evident the Twins would be bad going forward as well. It's a nice segue for why this season was so disappointing, way too many AB being given to players in career decline phases, unlikely to contribute to the next good Twins team. At best this season did nothing to advance the speed of the next good Twins team at worst it delayed it by failing to give fringy candidates every day AB.
  3. In a vacuum, as low upside rotation filler #5, sure but the Twins need some pitchers with more upside even if they are riskier.
  4. How many of these until we get demerits?
  5. Too short of career at this point, he might be able to alleviate that in another role but as a RP you just don't get enough innings to compensate. If he could put together 2 more dominant years I might change my mind.
  6. Gomez acted unacceptably, no question but I have a problem with McCann here as well. Getting your say in at the plate like he did with Fernandez is perfectly acceptable but to walk up the line and physically impede the player deliberately provokes the fight that ensues. Also think its unfair Gomez got suspended, as far I could tell he never got a swing in despite having Johnson take a shot at him. Punishment doesn't seem equitable.
  7. Was reading Fangraphs today and saw this line in an article, "Liriano held left-handed hitters to a .130/.175/.146 line". That's sort of ridiculous.
  8. When your best player is injured it makes a poor team even worse.
  9. Still Mauer, he was too much better when he did play not to win. If didn't have those two really down months at the beginning it might be a different story.
  10. I'd weakly favor Thielbar at this point as well, wouldn't be that hard for someone to snag it from with a strong last couple weeks though or if he faltered. Maybe I'll change my mind but even if Pinto hits well the remainder of the season I have a philosophical problem giving a Sept callup rookie of the year.
  11. I'm willing to believe that, thing is, most really good players don't want a short term deal, they want that long term deal that protects them from injury and decrease in performance. With relatively short term deals all you are going to get in guys who can't do any better. They still could be quality players like Orlando Hudson or Josh Willingham but they will come with their own shares of warts as well.
  12. Dozier has spent 1 year there after playing SS for the rest of his pro and college career, it shouldn't be too jarring for him.
  13. If they won't even consider it they're being foolish. Had a solid reputation in the minors and no defensive metric hated him, some actually found him to be above average at the position last year! SSS I know. It comes down to do you think the roughly .100 OPS Dozier provides outweighs the defensive benefit Florimon gives. I say yes because I think Dozier can be adequate there. He's viewed as good to excellent at 2B, which of his tools fail to translate to SS and would prevent him from switching?
  14. If I was going to engineer a trade with either I'd do sometime in 2014 when we have a better idea what Dozier and Rosario are going to do. Trading one away now seems foolish. If you trade Rosario and Dozier turns out to be a flash in the pan the Twins have very little depth at MI. Yes one or both could have lower value next year but it very well both could go higher as well. Rosario could dominate NB or Rochester like he did Fort Myers to start this year and Dozier bring up his average to better reflect what he did in the minors. Even just maintaining his current level of play would lead to his stock increasing as he'd have a longer track record of success. Striking while the iron is hot for older players who have limited time left on contracts is important but that's a significantly different situation to what we are dealing with here. Its perfectly acceptable to put out some feelers to gauge the market for either of these guys and if the right deal arises, of course, take it! That said, I wouldn't put trading either of them on my goals to accomplish this offseason.
  15. Game threads get a little too far off topic for my tastes but its to be expected when you have a bad team playing out it's season. Probably a better alternative then the storm of negativity that would arise from one that solely focused on the team and it's play.
  16. This offseason I agree. If Willingham bounces back next year a combo of Willingham + Burton and strikeout reliever could net a nice prospect. Carlos Beltran alone netted a prospect ranked somewhere in the 40's. Admittedly Willingham isn't quite as appealing but the combination probably could, under the right conditions net a prospect close to or in the late part of the top 100.
  17. Most of the blame there can be assigned to the way underperforming, very expensive free agents they've signed.
  18. Love Dozier have been an advocate going back to the BYTO days but I think it's probably still too premature to trade Rosario, barring the Twins getting some absolutely great return. Dozier is hardly proven at this point. Prospect for prospect trading is pretty unusual so that's a negative as well. I'm in the move Dozier back to SS camp, it didn't seem that Dozier was physically incapable of handling SS last year but instead it was more on the mental side of things. I'd also suggest that if such a move was not possible Dozier might be the better guy to trade, albeit sometime next season. Most contenders would favor Dozier's track record of success(assuming it continues next year) over the relative uncertainty of Rosario as an unproven prospect. For the Twins this trade isn't terrible either as the last years of Dozier's arbitration will be when he's north of 30 and likely in the beginning of his decline while only getting more expensive.
  19. I think people are being overly optimistic about Stewart's timeline. High school pitcher who hardly threw in high school and is considered very raw. I just don't see him arriving before 2017.
  20. He didn't exactly struggle there either though. I wonder if his AFL performance might impact what level he starts out next year. Rosario and Sano have been linked for the past few years as well, wonder if, despite Rosario's merely good NB line, they will want to keep the two of them together.
  21. Not a bad list here's where I'd quibble with it: Pinto feels too high, with the pretty iffy defensive reports and his being relatively old for a prospect I think he's a couple spots too high. He's similar to Dozier a couple years ago for me. Probably switch him and Berrios, I tend to buy into Berrios being fatigued at the end of the year, his first half was excellent. Polanco would make my top 10, hardly unusual for players to see a step down in production going into full season ball. A 19 year old holding his own while also being MI prospect is pretty impressive. Notable Omissions: Travis Harrison- Again like Berrios those first months were very solid but tailed down the stretch, first full year makes me think those first half numbers more representative of what we'll see going forward. Max Kepler- I've read too many prospect guys excited about his potential to get down on him in an season he spent recovering from injury.
  22. Because of the time he spent in the minors last year Dozier has 5 more years before he hits FA. Hence why you see a significant number big prospects spent an extra month or two in the minors(avoiding Super 2 as well) a minor amount of time can lead to nearly an extra year of control.
  23. Mobility is just ease of getting rid of the player in my opinion. Cheap garbage is easy to move, you just DFA it and say oh well. MLB talent already judges whether the players are garbage are not the mobility part factors in how easy it is to move the player. As far the the list jay did I think he rates the Twins finance side too high, while having the theoretical capability to spend, too often the Twins have cheaped out over the past decade.
  24. The number is something like 500 PA so Mauer would qualify.
  25. Piazza would have made it first ballot if he, like a ton of players from the era, didn't have steroid allegations plaguing him. Looking through historical catchers, how the heck did Torre not make the HoF as a player?
