1. Convince me why signing him as the 2nd catcher would be a bad idea. Was terrible offensively last year but the previous 2 years were decent from a catcher. Right around the league average for % thrown out and was well above average in pitch framing last year.
2. As the JJ Hardy trade should illustrate, getting bad value for a player merely because you have a follow up move to replace him is a bad idea.
3. He's a much more highly regarded prospect vs any of the other guys, he's pitched 40 games in AAA and he's 26 years old. Sending him back to AAA does nothing for him or the Twins, given his talent, he needs to sink or swim in the MLB.
4. It may just be one year but while surprising he had put up stats like that before in his career. Of course a guy who strikes out over a batter an inning with a low BB/9 is going to get people excited. I'd have preferred Kazmir(don't get me wrong, like the Hughes signing as well). Both Hughes and him have some injury concerns so I'll take the guy with the track record of being a great #2 at times vs hoping a more friendly home stadium significantly alters Hughes' performance.
5. App just isn't really necessary in this case, there really aren't much for benefits beyond what is already provided by the mobile site and apps are much higher maintenance not to mention the hassle of programming for 2-4 different platforms. If there was a significant offline or interactive component to TwinsDaily it might make sense to have an app but at this point it seems to be a large amount of work for small benefit. Someone like Brock could feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
6. Assuming the injuries haven't diminished his stuff I'd love to have Baker back.
7. Arroyo's age scares + contract length and cost scare me. While I'd much prefer Garza or Kazmir if it comes down to Pelfrey or Arroyo I'm not going to be disappointed if the Twins choose Pelfrey.
8. Bagwell Biggio Bonds Clemens Maddux Piazza Thomas Mussina Schilling Glavine
9. Don't like the comparison. Rosario has flat out made better contact through the minors and been pushed much quicker, Hicks spent a full two years in low A and never moved through a level in less than a year.
10. Polanco- he plays a MI position and would be at least an outside shot to be Rule 5 drafted and stick. Logan Darnell- Had a nice AZL last fall and followed it up with a pretty solid season in the upper minors. As a lefty he seems like a candidate to be selected as well.
11. Actually there was a significant attendance bump:
98: 1,165,976 99: 1,202,829 00: 1,000,760 01: 1,782,926 02: 1,924,473 03: 1,946,011 04: 1,879,222 05: 2,013,453 06: 2,285,018 07: 2,296,383 08: 2,302,431 09: 2,416,237
In a completely non-shocking turn of events fans are willing to show up more often to teams that are competitive. 12. Not too worried about that, if they're really knocking on the door you could always trade either one. Arroyo would be a nice pickup if he's the 2nd best FA pitcher signed this offseason. I certainly wouldn't want him on more than a 2 year deal though.
13. I tend to agree with this sentiment, theses topics are pretty closely linked.
14. Interesting that Stewart is viewed as the fastest HS player to the majors, with how raw and inexperienced he is as a pitcher. Highly encouraging as well.
15. Performance relative to peers always matters, maybe less so for Rk leagues but it does matter, especially if the numbers are backed up by the stuff which for Thorpe it is. Also 1 full year in prospect terms is significant, no he's not a freak like Urias but being 17 vs Jorge and Gonsalves being 18 is significant. Generally more chance for a 17 year old to grow 3 inches and add to his fastball then it is for a guy who is older, even just a year.
16. Sulbaran is listed under other C+ prospects so its not as if there is a significant difference between him and anyone in the 14-20 range. As for Thorpe age relative to league, he's younger than both were when they hit the GCL and put up better K/BB ratios as well. Sickels made his stuff sound more impressive as well. Again its only half a letter grade so its not as if there is a massive gulf between the 3.
17. Pressly's performance was not out of line with peripherals, landing nicely between his FIP and xFIP. He's also fairly young so expecting some modest improvement certainly isn't out of line.
18. Willingham is poor defensively but he's not so bad as to be an AL only player. The fact that he only had a .700 OPS last year really means his value is trivial though, he's the one of the two I'd hold on to and hope for a rebound to close to his career numbers. If that were to happen he'd have more value at midseason anyways.
19. Again, I don't understand what about his mediocre to bad 2011 and 2012(and that was at A+) as starter inspires this line of thinking. Sending him down strikes me as an utter waste of time, little chance he emerges to be a better option than the mediocrity we already have at AAA. He's a decent reliever with a good shot at being a good, cheap one for the next few years, I'm happy with that.
20. Actual obligations are lower, at 46 million. If the Twins only made move within the organization this offseason the payroll would be in that ballpark(68 is 2-3 million or so high imo).
21. DeVries- yes Swarzak - no found his niche in relief Duensing - same, too big of l/r splits Meyer - yes but I'd guess he might need more seasoning Mays - yes Pressly - no, declining K rates in the minors as a starter, reemerged as a RP Hernandez - yes I don't see there being a lack of room on the 40 man so I'd give Hendriks his last shot to stick. Maybe Darnell as well?
22. To be fair after Hoey's injury his best BB/9 for a season is worse than Welker's worst. Still not a "prospect" I'm excited about but Hoey had even worse control issues. Just talking about Hoey again brings up how baffling the Hardy trade was. How do you not get a better return for a guy who was dead average for the position on offense while being good to great defensively, at a premium defensive position no less?
23. Very cool stuff. You would think more teams would invest in the equipment the Orioles are using, I'm sure its relatively expensive but when we're talking about franchises worth hundreds of millions if not billions of dollars the edge you might be able to gain from spending thousands seems to be well worth it to me.
