Article: An Offseason of Intrigue
Number3 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Admittedly did not read every word of every post but I did not see one word about getting the right MANAGER. That is item number one. If they hire another "players manager", they could sign Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Gibson and Sandy Koufax and it won't make any difference . The idea of the Twins getting either Harper or Machado is comedians' material and another long term contract with either could be another disaster. I hope the Yankees blow about $100mil (minimum) on Harper because I truly believe his best years are already behind him. Twins need to focus on starting pitching and hope that young talent can finally come through. The free agent position player route will not work. -
Article: Miguel Sano Detained In Dominican Republic
Number3 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I have posted several times that Sano is injury prone below the neck and lacking in true desire to excel and very immature above the neck. Twins should put the baseball totally in his court. No special treatment one way or another. Off season.....totally on Sano. Whether or not to even show up for spring training.....totally on Sano. How he performs and/or listens to coaching during spring training....totally on Sano. Who goes north in 2019 on the final roster....totally on Sano. Time to act and perform like what he is supposed to be or go back to DR and play slow pitch softball. -
I have no idea what Buxton's and/or Sano's plans are for the off season but they had best show up next February ready to reassert that they belong in the Major Leagues. This has nothing to do with talent. It has everything to do with attitude and desire and physical/mental makeup. I have no idea about Buxton's background but its easy to believe that Sano could be very comfortable going back to his home country and playing the rock star role. Maybe he doesn't have the makeup to face bases loaded 2 outs tying run on second base for the rest of his young adult life. This needs to be resolved by their performance and only their performance and the Twins need to head north next March with the decision made. Unfortunately, I think they both have fragile physical and mental makeups. Who ever heard of a player going on the DL with headaches and then fouling a ball off his toe in a rehab game and missing the entire season? Sano seems to be too big for his physical frame makeup and will remain injury prone.

Article: Twins Manager Paul Molitor Fired
Number3 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Molitor should have been fired after the 59-103 season. Ironically, that is what led to the MOY award in 2017. All that matters now is who they hire and if it is a "player friendly" manager, forget 2019. (See Dave Martinez, Washington Nationals who said at the start of spring training, (Paraph) ""I'm just going to let the players have fun and play". Speaks for itself.)- 284 replies

Article: Twins Manager Paul Molitor Fired
Number3 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A day late but it had to be done. It sends a message to the entire organization that there actually is accountability. Whether or not Molitor deserved to be fired is irrelevant. Now, who they hire to replace him is very relevant and I hope he is a take no prisoners type of manager.- 284 replies

If Joe Mauer is/was so great why is it always necessary for someone to revisit and reaffirm that Joe Mauer is so great? Greatness does not have to be proven by dredging up stats from a 100 column spreadsheet. Greatness simply "is". For someone with so much supposed greatness Mauer had very little impact on games day after day and was in no way a presence on the field when he should have been in his prime. There is no one in the Hall who has to have a list of miscellaneous stats to justify that he is in the "Hall". Best average with risp. 48 rbi's. Go figure. My guess..a LHB hits a flare to left and a runner on second can't score. Take one "great" season out and Joe Mauer had a nice career as a Major League baseball player. As such he is upper tier of the middle of the pack who ever played the game for any length of time but not among the "greats" who played the game. He stands out on Twins' teams of the past decade or longer because there is no one else on those teams who has even come close to star status unless you count Torii Hunter or Morneau for a couple of years so Mauer had to be hyped while performing at a journeyman level.

Twins lost and are 9-13 in September. Comparing Mauer to Killebrew is like comparing a goat to a bull. 2 different breeds of animals and I would bet that Killebrew could not have cared less what his total base count for his career was and could not have told you what it was if you asked him.

Article: Final Week Of The Mauer Era? Let's Enjoy It
Number3 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think its a coincidence that Mauer did much better when he had a star supporting cast; primarily Justin Morneau along with Torii Hunter and maybe others. He obviously was not comfortable carrying the "star" load by himself. I still consider him an underachiever who relied totally on his natural ability. He had/has no desire to be a team leader and basically showed up for work. To Mauer, baseball literally was/is a "walk" in the park. (pun intended).- 41 replies

Article: MIN 8, DET 2: Gonsalves Stymies Tigers
Number3 replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins have averted a bad September finish by winning 4 straight but are still 8-10 for the month. Only 10 to go with last 7 at home v Tigers and White Sox. I think how they finish will say a lot about how they do next year. How about at least 1 in Oakland and then 5-2 on the final home stand. Not too much to ask.- 31 replies

Odorizzi has been a rock this year and has taken the ball every time it has been his turn. Win or lose he has been a true pro all year. Twins dealt a blow to Yankees #1 wild card hopes. I hope they win every one of their remaining games against White Sox, Royals, and Tigers (they had better win most of them) but I do hope they lose to the A's so that Yankees have to go to Oakland for the wild card game. Maybe September can actually mean something after all.

I fully expected to see Mauer's 4 run homer sneak over the left field wall. Instead it was a 406+ ft blast to slightly right center. So now the question remains why was that only home run # 6 for the season? The answer has to be that his main goal is maintaining that .300 life time batting average, not helping the Twins win baseball games. Therefore, simply make contact and hit to the opposite field. Bryce Harper did the same thing recently when his average was heading towards the Mendoza line. I honestly believe that Mauer will do anything to keep that .300 average including retiring.

Article: Where Are The Twins Getting It Wrong?
Number3 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Per USAF Chief "I can tell you one place where they're getting it wrong: take a look at the current 40 man roster, two years into their tenure. Arguably worse than at any point in my lifetime. And none of what young talent they do have has been signed to a long term contract. Not one single player." Bingo, bingo, and bingo! The Twins are in worse shape than at any time including 2016 and that includes the Manager. Molitor seems to be daring the FO to fire him with the lineups and batting orders he has been sending out there. "What are you going to do, fire me?" Only good news is that there should be absolutely no false hope for 2019 and absolutely no marketing slogan that can sugar coat the obvious. Proof in the pudding will be the Baltimore Orioles who crashed and burned this year. I predict they will out perform the Twins next year. -
No point in going into the weeds on this. Very simply this team is in disarray and the only goal is to take the field next spring with a semblance of a major league baseball team. No plan, no systematic method of upgrading or even maintaining a level of talent. If you want to see what seats of pants with wings look like, check the back sides of F/V and rest of Twins' management.

I honestly believe that Mauer has been a drag on the whole team for several years. Twins must "cut bait" after this awful season which started with promise and will end in total disarray. Mauer is as much symbolic as anything and as long as he stays with the team the worse than simply mediocre Mauer era will continue. Twins better start '19 with no Mauer and, by the way, no Molitor.

Article: Hardball, the Twins, and Byron Buxton
Number3 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins are conducting a social experiment; not a Major League baseball franchise. Their motto is "Can't we all just get along?" If they could change the rules to not keeping score they would jump at the chance. Truly is a crying shame. Joe Mauer and Paul Molitor are perfect to be the face/manager of this franchise. Really nice, low key people who don't want to ruffle any feathers. -
Article: Hardball, the Twins, and Byron Buxton
Number3 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Is this really all that complicated? Buxton is either a major league ball player or he isn't. Stop treating him like he has some kind of disability. If he is healthy he should be playing at the major league level. If he can't "hack" it so be it. Typical making the proverbial mountain out of a mole hill. What is better for his so called development, playing against an Oakland A's team that is fighting for a playoff spot or playing wiffle ball in his back yard? Way too many chiefs and not enough good Indians. That is for sure. -
Per Mauer's 1,000th run. That's $200K+ per run. What a deal. That is double 6 figures for simply crossing the plate playing a game. If this was Jeopardy, the question would be, What is wrong with pro sports today? Continuing to hype Mauer's career stats in light of what he has been paid is hilarious. Any product on the market with his price/performance ratio would have been discontinued due to lack of sales years ago.

Article: Week in Review: Mauer Passes Carew
Number3 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"By no means Mauer passing Carew as second best in the Hits parade under a Twins' uniform puts him in a Hall of Fame discussion..." Ditto, ditto and ditto. Truly hard to believe that Mauer passing Carew is even deemed worthy of a thread title. Only took him 3 more years to do it. Maybe Charlie Sheen actually posted that lol. I wonder how much more Mauer made per hit than Carew did. Probably 10 times as much minimum.- 42 replies

Article: We Are All Witnesses, Right?
Number3 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Joe Mauer was, and I guess still is, an amazing overall athlete with great God given talent. He either struck out only once or maybe never in his entire high school career. Anyone with that kind of talent is going to pile up high ranking team stats if he stays on that team for his entire career. Twins record in the Mauer era 1080 wins, 1155 losses. Since the big contract 647 wins, 776 losses. Mauer never made an effort in off season to maintain his early success and figured he could just show up and play and do ok. Winning was obviously never a priority with Joe and being a team leader obviously was not. At a size for a football tight end he is content to flare balls to left to keep the average and obp up and maybe run into one every now and then. Talent - A Effort and determination to be great and and actually improve in his prime years - F Joe was/is and underachiever who could have been great but settled for good. -
Article: Twins Daily Roundtable: Grading Molitor
Number3 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"I don't see how anyone can describe Molitor as anything but a disaster and if he's back next year I'll start calling for Levine and Falvey's heads.I don't see how anyone can describe Molitor as anything but a disaster and if he's back next year I'll start calling for Levine and Falvey's heads." I would go one notch higher than "disaster" but I totally agree, and always have, that Molitor is not a good manager, especially for a perpetual work in progress like the Twins. Hall of Fame players don't make good managers for multiple reasons. Managers of marginal teams especially need to project a winning mind set from the dugout and be the face of the team's spirit. They need to be animated and demonstrate that they are in every game and in it to win. Molitor could be a mannequin in the dugout and no one would notice the difference. Twins under current regime seem to want managers who simply don't make waves. Just be quiet, take your $2mil salary, and go home at the end of the season. -
"Hey, they aren't on the bottom anymore." Unfortunately because the other teams have gotten worse, not that the Twins have gotten better. Its more and more obvious that these big long term contracts and signing bonuses to rookies are detrimental to the sport. Baseball is now played by the bean counters as much as the players on the field. See Washington Nats who threw in the towel after declaring themselves WS champs in March for the 3rd year in a row.. Then the players circle the wagons around management because they know who cuts the checks and they want to play this out as long as they can. Is it so bad to not be in the post season when you can go home with $millions to spend?

Article: Week in Review: Hitting a Stride
Number3 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
LA Vikes fan posted- "......The FO thinks we can contend next year......." Who is "we" and "contend" for what? Where is the source that the Twins' FO thinks the Twins can contend (I guess for AL Central) next year? The Twins will have more unknowns heading into next year than they did this year and will be coming off a worse record than they did this year. I can't believe they would go out on such a limb unless it is purely the marketing department saying this. "Get your 2019 season tickets now while they last!" BTW, the upcoming Oakland series should be a good bench mark and the A's have gone about the business of winning baseball games now instead of always in the future.- 33 replies

I am for sure, if not still a winning season. The FO can't possibly try to tank the season any more than they have so just settle down and go out and win baseball games. Gardenhire "hates second place" so no need to worry about the Tigers. Maybe September baseball can still be fun since the geniuses have run out of towels to throw in.
