  1. Let's face it, 2014 is not going to be a year that we're in contention. You sign Drew now, even to a 3 year deal, and for 1/3 of the contract he'll do us no good. Personally, I'd rather muddle through a couple of seasons with Florimon and Santana, and draft Trea Turner in June, along with a high-upside HS pitcher in the second. Turner could be ready as soon as 2016 and would be a great addition to a future core of Buxton, Sano, Arcia, Pinto, Hicks, Meyer, Gibson, Berrios, Dozier, Rosario, etc. I'd much prefer that scenario than signing Drew. I have a feeling in the future, Drew might consider accepting a QO rather than go through the headache he's gone through this winter.
  2. My question is how does Davenport project the Mighty Whities to improve by 16 wins? They've made a couple of moves, but I don't think they've improved by anywhere close to that.
  3. This makes the most sense.
  4. How is 5 pages of discussion about Stephen Drew (who was never mentioned by the Twins as a potential free agent the Twins are going after) a good thing. The discussion was SUPPOSED to be about Gardy's comment on circling back on someone the Twins had actually been tied to this off-season. The only ties I've seen between the Twins and Drew was by someone nationally who said the Twins should go after Drew, not by the Twins themselves. This thread has been co-opted. I'm glad CMath attempted to get back to the original topic. I have no problem with a discussion on Drew, but it should be in it's own thread, not this one which was supposed to speculate about potential free agents the Twins might reactivate discussions with.
  5. It's not just $$$, it's $$$ plus our second round draft pick. (who likely will automatically join our top 15 prospects, because of the depth of this year's draft,)
  6. Personally, rather than Drew, I'd prefer to buy low on a shortstop who had an off year from a team that has another shortstop on the doorstep. I can think of two off the top of my head. The Indians have Lindor ready to step in, so Asdrubal Cabrera might be available. Or better yet, the Cubs have Javier Baez on the doorstep, so how about Starlin Castro who is signed long-term (with option until 2020) at a reasonable rate.
  7. I'll throw out another name as someone we're circling back on - Johann
  8. I can't see the Twins going after someone who will cost them a draft choice. This year's draft is very deep. Drew is not worth a draft choice. I could see Arroyo or a 3B type - Placido Polanco, Justin Turner or Michael Young. Semi-big names, not great players, but maybe a guy to push Plouffe.
  9. How can they say 1967 Killebrew when his 1969 MVP season was far superior in all categories - HR 49 to 44, RBI 140 to 113, BA .276 to .269, OBP .427 to .408, BB 145 to 131, OPS 1.011 to .965. Someone made an error. This was the greatest season ever for a Twin. EDIT: Sorry I started my rant before thetank had been posted and was interrupted.
  10. Plouffe signs today per MLB Traderumors $2.35M
  11. Thry - Not sure why Theilbar was one of the guys you bolded. In 46 innings the guy had an ERA under 2.00 and a WHIP under 1.0. I'd certainly keep him. I agree that Tonkin should be on the staff as well as Ibarra. I'd be on the phone trying to trade Duensing (I just don't trust him), Fien, and maybe Worley or one of the others. I know he was injured, but Mastro just didn't look like the player he was 2 years ago. He needs to hit better and be a threat on the basepaths to make the team. Fryer is Butera. Pinto should be there. I'd rather have Herrmann's flexibility and power on the bench. I'd also have him practicing at both 1B and 3B to add to his versitility. In an emergency, he could even play CF for an inning or two as could Arcia. That being said, Sano won't start the season in the majors. He may even start on the DL depending on his arm. I think he'll start at New Britain, move to Rochester and then the majors by late June. Hicks will start at Rochester even if he does well in ST as a punishment for not playing winter ball. He'll also be up by June. This roster will look very different after the trade deadline.
  12. As far as shortstops go, the Twins basically have NEVER drafted and signed a player who stuck at that position in the majors for any length of time. They have drafted shortstops who have succeeded at other positions (i.e. Cuddyer and Knoblauch). But in the full history of the draft the top four shortstops the Twins have drafted in terms of games played at shortstop for the Twins are Pat Meares (737), Danny Thompson (468), Brian Dozier (83) and Trevor Plouffe (55). Virtually all other starting shortstops came via trade or before the draft existed (Zoilo Versalles).
  13. Swarzak and Duensing were told to report as potential starters before all of the FA signings. I doubt that's still the case.
  14. Meyer's not even on the 40-man yet, so his option clock hasn't started ticking yet. Same with Gilmartin.
  15. Yes - for now at 3B. After Sano comes, as a corner OF or Super Utility. As for next year - not if he doesn't improve.
  16. Youk - $2MM signing bonus, $2MM salary, $1MM incentives http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/rakuten-golden-eagles-to-sign-kevin-youkilis.html
  17. The way catchers have been flying off the board, no way Suzuki is a minor league deal. If we could get him under $5M, I'd grab him. In fact I'd give him a 2-year deal.
  18. I guess we have to trade Willingham now so we can give Kubes #16 back.
  19. If Doumit was afraid and uncomfortable at 1B, I'd say he'd be petrified at 3B. It's just not happening.
  20. The Twins announced the signing of Hoffman, a 25 year old lefty out of the Detroit org, with an invite to ST. Last three years at AAA averaging 9.0K/9 with ERA's of 3.18, 3.69 and 2.06. Don't know his splits, but could this be our new loogy to take Duensing's place?
  21. As has been stated - Tanaka is not Darvish. Remember the hype with Dice-K, that's more of a comparable. Would you pay Darvish prices for Dice-K? I sure wouldn't. Go for Garza instead.
  22. Kershaw is also on next year's FA list. And of the best names next year, virtually all the best will get extensions - Kershaw; Lester; Scherzer; and Masterson (I just don't see the Indians losing Ubaldo, Kazmir and Masterson in 2 short years). If you take the $7-$8MM+ that Salty or AJ would have cost and the $5MM we supposedly offered Pelfrey, that's $12-$13MM. Now that we're going with Pinto and no veteran catcher, why not spend another $2-$4MM for Garza. If we can convince him to take a 3-year deal, that would be ideal, but I'd go four years if I had to (with a limited no trade clause). As long as we have the ability to trade when the kiddie corps comes of age, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Here's a list of next year's FA's: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/02/2015-mlb-free-agents.html
  23. First of all, we need to clear some room on the 40-man. If you look at our pitchers and realize that the new 40-man adds can't be removed, then take into consideration guys that are out of options, we are either going to lose some of these guys for nothing or have to trade some away. By my estimation, these are the pitchers that either will be on the team, should be on the team, or guys out of options: Nolasco; Hughes; Correia; Hendricks; Swarzak; Perkins; Burton; Fien; Duensing; Diamond; Worley; Deduno; Tonkin; Theilbar; Gibson; Pressley. That's 16 pitchers and unless we are going with no bench whatsoever, someone's got to go. Personally, I'm hoping with a stronger set of starters, that we can go with no larger than a 12-man pitching staff. That means four of these guys have to go and we might as well get something for them by trading them now rather than DFA'ing them during spring training and getting nothing.
  24. Same with Duensing this year. R/L Splits - BA .263/.303; OPS .713/.786 He also gave up more homers and RBI's against lefties. Just sayin'
