  1. We need Heezy's opinion, but I have read that this type of injury takes more than a few days. I would think he'll go on the IL and Jake Cave will be in uniform again shortly.
  2. I haven't read the whole thread but I agree with a roster of the 12 position players listed in RivBri's post. If we can get by with a 12-man pitching staff then I'd actually lean toward Adrianza over Cave as the 13th player.
  3. I think it's important to have at least one reliable lefty in the rotation. I think we may have found our man.
  4. Well, as long as we're extrapolating... We are undefeated against KC and Detroit and 2-1 against Cleveland. That projects to 51-6 against those three teams. Add in Baltimore and we're 57-6. Just play .500 ball against everyone else and we're 107-55.
  5. Caution: nitpick alert. I think that 3 or fewer earned runs allowed by a starter in 6 or more innings is a good benchmark to use for determining whether he has done his job. But I wish the term quality start wouldn't have been coined for such a start. I'd rather call it a satisfactory start.
  6. If they do as well against the White Sox as against these three teams they should be in pretty good shape.
  7. Jim Kaat is 80 years old so I completely understand why his schedule of appearances is limited, but he clearly is totally with it cognitively and his vast experience and knowledge make him the best analyst we've got.
  8. My inner mathematician wishes to point out that the strike zone is a pentagonal prism with seven faces (or sides), fifteen edges, and ten corners.
  9. The good reason is that half of MLB teams can be considered northern teams. NYY, NYM, Bos, Phi, Pit, Cle, Bal, Cin, Det, CWS, ChC, Min, Col, StL, KC. Is it fair to have all those teams play lots of road games early in the season, always, every year? Probably not.
  10. There is absolutely nothing wrong with pitching to contact. It's an excellent strategy but it's not one-size-fits-all. Nolan Ryan never thought about pitching that way and he never should have. But pitchers who rely on finesse and deception, and there have been many very good ones, should try to induce less-than-ideal contact. Don't waste pitches trying to strike someone out unless the situation calls for it. That type of pitcher should have as his goal getting through an inning on two ground-outs and a fly-out in 7 pitches. I seem to remember a game that Brad Radke won with no K's. I guess he said afterward that he couldn't get anyone out.
  11. I remember reading a Patrick Reusse column many years ago that said something to the effect that you can watch an NBA game closely and see nothing new at all, but you can watch an MLB game closely and see something new every time.
  12. That was me during the 1986-1991 seasons, although I did night games as well depending on my work schedule. (I was single then, BTW.) I'd buy an upper level seat at below face value from a scal- ... uh, streetside ticket agent, sneak down to the lower level, find an unoccupied seat close to the infield, enjoy a bit of dome food along with a beverage or two, keep book while watching the game, and just enjoy major league baseball.
  13. It would reduce the "we wuz robbed!" fan commentary because it would reduce robbery.
  14. Nobody should have to earn a correct call. Automated pitch calling is currently at or above the level of humans and will improve. It's time to take action to install that.
  15. I know there are a lot of off-days here but we still need to rest people and give others a chance to play, if for no other reason than not to get rusty. If you're going to play your B lineup do it when Berrios is pitching. It still gives you a chance to win, as shown by today's game. We came up short but we were right there. Save your best lineup for when you've got someone else starting.
  16. So we're 5-3. A lot of folks will say, "meh". Well, going 5-3 every 8 games allows you to meh your way to a 100-win season.
  17. I have one criticism of Astudillo's performance today. In the 4th inning he scored on Buxton's double, but with two out he needs to run full bore through home plate. He eased up coming home and if Buxton had been thrown out at second the run would not have counted.
  18. I'm surprised Bert's opening day max was that low. Keep in mind that upon his retirement he was third all time in strikeouts. Third all time!!!
  19. Haven't read all the posts yet and I'm not up to speed on the latest news, but if this continues much longer maybe he'd take a low-ball 1-year offer.
  20. I'm not disagreeing with your description, I just think Rod Stewart is worse.
  21. This reminds me of something Reusse suggested some years ago. Have a promotion called baseball only night. The scoreboard shows only text, no video. The only music is provided by the organist.
