  1. I love this "Get To Know" series of articles. Thanks for another good installment, Seth. Bechtold strikes me as one of those players who will end up being a solid addition to the organization. I'll be rooting for him.
  2. Indeed, this is fun stuff to read. Thanks for the research and for posting it. Brings back lots of fun baseball memories. Sam Mele! And I think I had one of those Dick Stigman baseball cards at one time!
  3. The idea of using a clock to time the seconds between pitchers or batters make me shudder. No, no, no! For me, one of the great things about baseball is that they do NOT use a clock of any sort, Keep it that way. But yeah, the overall length of the games is a concern, especially in these time-pressed attention-span-deficit times. I'd opt for reducing or curtailing the stepping out of the batter's box stuff, and also the visits to the mound, by other players or coaching staff.
  4. I'm eager to see if Rooker can sustain the hype and hope at the next level. Very intriguing power. But the player that I'm most excited about, only from reading about him, is Akil Badoo. Hey, all of a sudden there are a LOT of very good prospects in the Twins system to get excited about!
  5. My first thought was: Scott Diamond is back! Whatever happened to that guy?
  6. I'd love for the Twins to sign Darvish, but the idea of a 6-year contract --- especially for an aging pitcher with TJ surgery --- makes me very, very nervous!
  7. Like so many others have already said, Boshers should be the first man overboard. And at this point, keeping Kinley around strikes me as a head-scratcher too. All that aside, I'm starting to think that maybe a trade of some sort could be in the wind.
  8. Totally agree on the multi-year thing, and also the good deal aspect of this signing. In fact, I like getting Reed much more than adding Rodney. Seems like a better fit for the club's needs.
  9. From what I've been reading, Brusdar Graterol could be a potentially powerful part of the rotation in the near future. Your other picks "on the verge", Enlow and Leach, might also be mainstays. For some reason I think Gonsalves will end up being a disappointment. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm just not that excited about him. Count me a big Thorpe fan, though!
  10. Very interesting article on a subject that deserves more attention. Being from the o ld school of fans, I'm still trying to get my head around all these new stats, or sabermetrics, or whatever they are being called these days. BsR is a new one for me! But yeah, these sort of running skills are crucial in creating runs, or the opportunity to score more of them. Great to see the Twins scoring high in this area.
  11. Another interesting article, much appreciate as always. But I have a suggestion, or rather a request: Is it possible to include captions beneath the photos, telling us who exactly is pictured? I honestly have no idea who some of these players are!
  12. Reading stories like that remind me of why I love baseball. And very good article, by the way!
  13. I always enjoy reading these write-ups about the newer players in the system. Very informative. Thanks for another good report, Seth!
  14. Count me as one that was also surprised and disappointed that they selected Lewis with the first pick. But ... after reading more about him, and factoring in the uncertainty of the pitching prospects in the top five, I think it was a good pick. Plus, the other picks the Twins made in the early rounds look like good ones too. Astute, canny, smart, or whatever you want to call it, I think it was an impressive draft. We all know the results are still years away, but I'm optimistic.
  15. It was certainly an odd mix of first-timers on the roster this season. Not all of our favorite prospects were called to the show, but that's no tragedy either. Of course, many of those decisions were based on injuries, the need for a 26th-man, and other factors, so it's all understandable to a certain degree. Looking over the list, didn't Melville also make his major league debut this year? .
  16. An interesting, creative idea! Duda has never been one of those "wow" players that you get excited about, but as your stats you posted show, he's capable of putting up some very respectable numbers. He's certainly much young than Napoli, and less injury prone too. But as someone else noted, he doesn't seem to be the right fit for what the Twins need next season. Plus, they just signed Brock Stassi to a minor league contract, and he's a guy who is very good with the glove at first base if the Twins are looking for a backup at some point.
  17. So very true! I vividly recall all the clamoring for Sipp and Bastardo that year, and look how that worked out. Or rather how it didn't. Signing free agent relief pitchers can be such a gamble. I'm more comfortable with what we have in the system already. On that note, what is the consensus on Trevor May for 2018? Will they try him in the bullpen or give him a shot as starter again?
  18. Ah, the infamous Ron Davis syndrome! Maybe not as horrible as Steve Blass Disease, but nevertheless an ailment that makes longtimeTwins fans cringe! That aside, good points about Rodney. I'm not giddy over the signing, but hopefully he'll be a stabilizing presence in the closer's role. Then again ....
  19. Very informative roundup, Seth. Thanks for that. Interesting to hear that Mientkiewicz will be the Tigers' hitting coach ... in Toledo. Poor guy; that's a long way from his home in Florida!
  20. Yeah, I think finding closers is not such a difficult task, or at least not one you need to over-think. Given the opportunity, some guys rise to the task and shine. Remember some guy named Joe Nathan? The Jepson trade could certainly be called a bad one, or at least not a very productive one. But if I remember correctly they picked up Burton in the off-season for practically nothing and he performed very well that first year.
  21. We need more catching depth, and I'm encouraged by Ben's progress and his potential. Seems like he has those necessary intangibles like "good makeup" and the right attitude too. Keep on climbing that organizational ladder!
  22. Well written article and good analysis, Nick. As you so accurately stated: These are hefty prices to pay for relief pitchers, the most notoriously volatile of baseball assets. While it would be nice to bring in a veteran reliever with some firepower, I would hesitate to pay big bucks and a multi-year contract to some guy like Rodney who might implode in the first half. Frankly, I'd rather take my chances with the kids we have in the system already.
  23. On the possibility of the Twins signing Yu Darvish, every post or article I read mentions the "ties" that he has to Thad Levine from his days in Texas. But how much of a factor is that really? Just because Levine was in the front office at the same time, does that really signify some sort of strong relationship he had with Darvish? I mean, were they golfing buddies, going out for sushi together, swapping wives or something else that might have created a strong bond? Otherwise, it doesn't seem to me that such a tenuous "link" will play any part in Darvish deciding to sign with the Twins or not. Any thoughts?
  24. Fascinating article. Thanks for writing that one. Yes, the optimist in me certainly hopes that Slegers can make use of this unique attribute and win some games for us this year!
  25. That trade stills seems to good to be true. How did we steal that one? Then again, Arizona has made some loony deals in the past couple of years. Thinking of how Atlanta took took advantage of them a few times, getting good prospects for a whole lot of mediocrity.
