  1. I add my voice to the chorus: it's hard not to like this trade. Giving up only one player, and a lower level minor league one at that, for Odorizzi seems like a deal that, while maybe not a "steal", heavily favors the Twins, Thumbs up! But hey, maybe Tampa Bay sees something special in Palacios. For their sake, I hope so. If I'm a Tampa Bay fan, I'm scratching my head over his one. Meanwhile, the Twins didn't get an ace, but a durable starter who could end up being an above average addition to the rotation. I just hope his stats in 2018 end up looking more like they did 3 years ago for TB.
  2. It's revenge for the Tigers "stealing" Pelfrey from us a few years ago!
  3. Actually, this is the sort of move the Twins made just 3-5 years ago. Anyone remember the names among that motley crew of pitchers we used not so long ago? Deduno was probably the best of the lot!
  4. Well... usually, Or that's the way it's always seemed. I'm actually a bit confused by this discussion. It seems like this past off-season we are being told that power (home run hitters) is not as hot a commodity as it used to be.All these big home run hitter are not getting signed so quickly. So, what is going on? I realize "launch angle" is the new hot topic, and most of what Parker wrote makes a lot of sense, but I'm still a bit hazy on what's going on. Is it all ONLY about line drives and power, or what else is factoring into this concept?
  5. I've always been a bit skeptical of Gonsalves and his potential. He doesn't scream "ace", but the more I read about him I'm impressed with his makeup and attitude. Hopefully, he's got a lot more going for him than Milone (yikes!) and is closer to someone like a Greg Maddux who has great control. Let's give him a look-see soon!
  6. Well, the additions to the bullpen were impressive, although the idea of Fernando Rodney as the team's closer still gives me painful intestinal cramps. Still waiting on that A-list starter, Even the lower tier possibilities such as Garcia and Cashner are already off the board. Hmm ... is this Archer trade going to actually happen or is that just another wild rumor? Every day I keep waiting for something positive, but I'm feeling pessimistic at this point.
  7. I don't see how Hughes could even be considered for the starting rotation to start the season. Hey, I'd love to be proved wrong and see him revert to the form he showed 3 or 4 years back, but I think that's highly unlikely at this point, especially since he's coming back from an injury. I'm guessing someone with a tad of MLB experience, such as Slegers, would have more of a chance to earn a spot.
  8. Yes, to all that. Enlow is definitely one of the more intriguing and exciting young pitchers in the system. Love the potential!
  9. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking. Spring Training is starting soon. Hell, the regular season is starting soon! Yeah, too bad we couldn't sign Darvish, but I always thought that was very unlikely. But now the Twins DO need to find another "quality" starter --- or two --- and do it ASAP! Of all the names bandied about, Archer would be my first choice, but I'd also be very reluctant to trade away 3 or 4 good prospects for him.
  10. Good article. I like the idea of thinking outside the box, or at least thinking of pitchers that weren't obvious targets. That said, I agree with Mike Sixel; why trade (and give up some good assets) for the type of pitcher you could just as easily sign from the group of free agents that are out there? Even though it wouldn't cost us a Top 10 prospect, I'd rather dip into the free agent pool.
  11. If nothing else, with Brusdar Graterol and Akil Baddoo, the Twins have some of the best player names in the Minors!
  12. That one puzzled me too. I know that Napoli's name has been linked to the Twins during this off-season, but that still seems like speculation at this point. Buy why would he be "trying to lure" Darvish to Minnesota? Maybe there is more to this Levine factor than I thought!
  13. I wouldn't say no to that idea either. I'd still prefer Cobb from that bunch, but having Garcia for a full year wouldn't depress me.
  14. Gotta agree with the love for this feature too. Always a fun read!
  15. I realize that signing pitchers like Cashner and Jimenez aren't going to excite many --- or any --- people out there, but someone in that "lower level" tier of veteran free agents might be able to help solidify the rotation.
  16. Unfortunate news about Santana, but at least it's not an 80 game suspension of something where he'd be gone half the season. But as the poster before me noted, Erv may not be able to contribute effectively as soon as some of us would expect or hope for. So, what to do? Last year the Twins were able to find players like Gee and Colon to fill in temporarily, but that was mid-season. Do we continue to hope for someone like Darvish or start raiding the dumpster now?
  17. Call me nuts, but I've always liked those "ball ball" hitters like Vlad. If I'm a batter and see a pitch that I like, one that I think I can do some damage with, who cares if it's in the strike zone or not? Take a swing and let some magic happen! That said, I also admire the patient batters with a "good eye," the ones who know the strike zone and tend to draw more walks, thus getting on base more often. Why not embrace both "talents" ?
  18. This is slightly off topic to this post, but Mike's post reminded me of the "winning matters" concept that has always puzzled me. Just how much does winning matter? Or more specifically, how much extra money will a team earn if it makes it to the playoffs, or all the way to winning the World Series? Is there a "ballpark" figure for winning a title? Of course there is the prestige and historic value of winning a pennant, but how much extra revenue does making the playoffs mean for the club? And how much extra money do the individual players themselves get?
  19. The White Sox could indeed be the surprise team this year, at least one that could play .500 ball. I don't think they are ready for the playoffs by any means, but I don't think they'll be quite as bad as they were last year. I still can't figure out what's going to happen in Detroit. My guess is that they are cellar dwellers this year, but hey, it's baseball and anything can happen. Which is as it should be!
  20. The starting rotation as it stands right now is cause for concern. Not much depth or flexibility. Obviously. another "quality" arm in the rotation is needed, but if that fails, the front office needs to get creative and maybe take a flier on one of these "Lesser" names, but one that might put together a decent season like Vargas did for KC last year. But man, let's do it soon. Spring Training is just around the corner!
  21. Neither Graterol or Baddoo made any of those lists? Somewhat surprising not to see either player listed at least on one list. Yeah, these lists are all mostly speculation and half-baked "expert" analysis, but the overall picture for the Twins is looking promising, regardless of the fact that some of their most talented prospects didn't even make any of the lists.
  22. Man, some fun stuff in that article. Very well researched too! Good to hear that Caleb Thielbar is still pitching, although now with those hated Tigers!
  23. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for a great article. Man, the draft can be such a crapshoot, huh? All the excitement over a "great" prospect like Dave McCarty, who ended up being such a disappointment. I also remember the Braves drafting Mike Kelly, another "great" college player very high in the draft (number one?) about the same year, and he had an even more unspectacular career. Where's that crystal ball when you need it?
  24. It was already looking like a stretch for Kinley to make the team out of spring training, but with the addition of the three veteran pitchers in the bullpen, plus the young arms we have in the high minors, having him around makes less and less sense. Like Otwins said, Kinley is the sort of player you want to root for, but it's hard to see a fit for him on the staff, especially since we'd be obligated to having him on the roster all year. Seeing as how the team looks like it has hopes of contending this year, how do we justify keeping a guy like this --- somewhat of a "project" --- around all season?
  25. Gotta agree with that assessment. Boasting about "stealing strikes" could indeed come back to bite you in the you-know-where. But I also agree with the other posters: an interesting, delightful article!
