  1. Agreed. I could see maybe drafting based on health. College or high school pitchers with a high K rate might be throwing more sliders and high heat and tend to break down sooner than a location pitcher with a good mix.
  2. Just saying that continuously complaining about our "pitch to contact" philosphy and demanding the Anderson and Gardenhire be fired because of it gets old. Just like complaining about Mauer's contract. I don't think Anderson or the other Twins pitching coaches want their pitchers to leave the ball waist high over the middle.
  3. I like this better. Or Pitch to explosion.
  4. Is anyone else tired of this term (Pitch to Contact) being used to describe bad pitching or used to negatively describe pitchers with a low k rate? Good pitching does not necessarily mean a high strike out ratio or the ability to blaze a fastball like Kenny Powers. I think we all agree the Twins are lacking in good starting pitching right now and I don't think there is a Pitch to Contact conspiracy to blame for it. Just a bunch of starters (Baker, Blackburn, Slowey, Perkins, Liriano) who didn't end up being as good as Twins Mgmt and many fans (me included) thought they would be. Sorry about the rant.
  5. I see what the Twins did before this season as positive (Carrol, Willingham, Doumit, and Burton). After the lousy start, we are seeing what we hoped for (better defense, decent offensive production, improved bullpen, and bad starting pitching). I don't see a reason for the negativity surrounding the Liriano trade personally. I think it's a miracle that we got two guys that could contribute after seeing how up and down this guy has been for the past 5 years. As far as more trades go, I don't see anything until Pavano and Capps come back and then hopefully we can get something for them.
  6. By overpaying for him, do you mean willing to pick up the full remainder of his contract?
  7. Since Liriano has been traded, is Casilla the only Spanish speaking player left on the 25 man?
  8. Well maybe because Liriano will not be coming back, but let's see what these other guys can do first. If nothing else, we added two young bodies that have the potential to do something positive. A lot of folks here seem to think they could have brought in a lot more talent for Liriano, but I'm going to be believe that this was the best offer on the table.
  9. Well said. Plus Liriano might just become his old evil twin self at any moment. Ryan was trying to get a pitcher with more upside at a single or double A level (he said as much in an interview), but it looks like this was the best deal we could land. I'm guessing the middle infielder will be a cheap replacement for Casilla who will not be resigned.
  10. Cool! Taking my nephew from Albuquerque (Big Isotopes fan : ) to the game. Not sure if the Target Field experience can compete with the Topes home turf.
  11. I hope that Liriano just pitched his last game as a Twin. As much as this team needs starting pitching, he is not worthy of a long term or another 1 year deal. Even when things were going well, we never heard from Liriano or his agent, that he wants to stay. Am I wrong in remembering that about 3 years ago his agent tried to speed up his "free agent eligibility"?
  12. Good article JC! If I were an opposing GM, I would start the conversation with Terry Ryan with, "You guys have the worst starting rotation in baseball. Why do you want to trade your best starting pitcher? What's wrong with him?". That being said I really hope we can get something good for Frankie. I trust Ryan to make a good deal.
  13. Would the Mauer haters be Santana, Hunter, and Cuddyer haters if the Twins had resigned those players to the huge contracts they got from other teams? I agree enough is enough. He's a postive and extremely productive player (except for last season).
  14. I'm rooting for Blackburn to figure it out, but the odds are not great. I wish they would stick with Duensing for two more starts though and release Deduno (Didyouknow, DeNoNo, DeUhOh).
  15. I don't think there is any chance Baker could contribute next year. If he likes it here (the city and Twins mgmt) they could offer up a creative 4 year deal that makes next year a cheap rehab type of year for him. I would like to see them try to get a multi year affordable contract for Burton. How do we get any meaningful innings out of the money we have to pay Blackburn. Could he be a 7th inning type of guy? I know that's an expensive for a role like that, but at least we are getting something out of him. Maybe he can throw harder and somehow be better if he's only going one or two innings every other day?
  16. So if they platoon him, who else besides our long lost friend, Luke Hughes hits right handed and plays first base (I suppose Doumit could get more ABs there).
  17. I stand corrected! Just from watching him the past couple of games against the Twins I never would have guessed that. Thank you for pointing that out.
  18. I didn't see the need to Squeeze there either. Dotel is not a dominant pitcher anymore, and Carrol or Span could have made contact.
  19. ouch!! Hurts less when we are not in playoff contention.
  20. Cabrera is a machine. Burnett's curveball is sharp, but I question whey they threw the breaking ball to the lanky fellow who hit before Cabrera on a 3 ball count.
  21. Did you guys see the botched bunt/botched catch by the Tigers??!! WTH? That was a fair ball.
  22. I know numbers don't lie, but I would take this team over last year's team any day. At least they are playing defense and starting to show some life. Last year was hard to watch for me because of the Mauer cloud, awful defense, and revolving door at shortstop. Wouldn't you agree the bullpen, defense, and offense have all shown improvment? Wouldn't you agree that signing Doumit, Carrol, Burton, Capps, and Willingham were all good moves?
  23. Very well said. Long term is where the Twins Mgmt should focus.
