  1. Not to mention that Meyer is refining a new pitch and, unsurprisingly, is struggling with it. Now is not the time to call up Alex Meyer. Let him develop the new pitch against AAA hitting.
  2. And Hicks has massively outperformed Santana throughout their respective MiLB careers. Danny Santana has 24 (!) MLB plate appearances. That's less than six games of full-time play. You're literally basing your opinion on Santana over a single week of play.
  3. That's why I put the over/under between two and three starts from now (11 days after his last start). Personally, I'd think long and hard about pulling him now and I'd probably pull him if he stumbles in his next start.
  4. Hicks cracked pretty much every top 100 prospect list through his MiLB career, peaking as high as the low 20s on some lists. Santana? Zero top 100 lists. Hicks has out-performed Santana at every level of the minor leagues. As far as prospects go, they're not even in the same conversation. Hicks has a MiLB OPS 100 points higher than Santana. Also, don't take personal digs at other users, particularly administrators.
  5. Yeah, but they do not have the roster space to dedicate to a healing outfielder right now. They need warm bodies who can play outfield and if Arcia can't do it, then he should stay in the minors.
  6. TF is unfair to lefties. David Ortiz simply has the man muscles to overcome that deficit. Pitch to the guy. Make him beat you unless men are on and first base is open.
  7. I'd still pitch to him unless second or third were occupied and first base was open. I'm not a fan of the IBB and feel that it ends up burning teams as often as it helps. Hughes is now pitching in Target Field, not Fenway or Yankee Stadium. Ortiz can't homer on a lazy flyball in this stadium. He'll have to crush it to get it out... Obviously, Ortiz is fully capable of doing that but it makes his job harder.
  8. These two statements make absolutely no sense when placed next to one another. A year ago, every GM in baseball would have taken Hicks over Santana and wouldn't have thought twice about it. Hell, even today it's likely at least 25 of them would still take Hicks over Santana.
  9. In 22 ABs against Hughes, Ortiz has a 1.300 OPS. Ell-oh-ell. http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/sortable_batter_vs_pitcher.jsp#season=2014&batting_team=111&batter=120074&pitching_team=142&pitcher=461833
  10. While the Ortiz situation was quite the blunder, the Twins played Ortiz pretty much every day from May 13th through September 30th before he was released. I'm not sure what else they could have done to "maximize value". I find it really odd that he cleared waivers. The guy OPSed over .800 in 2002, for crying out loud.
  11. No idea, that's just what I've heard in recent days.
  12. Unless I'm missing something, Arcia should still have one option remaining.
  13. I've been trying to replace that top ad with something smaller but all of our "good" ad sources have been slow with mobile offerings. I'm hoping to resolve that problem in the relatively near future. It bugs me as much as it bugs the rest of you.
  14. That's what I'm hoping as well. Inversely, I'd like to see Meyer continue to excessively throw his change and struggle a bit in the short-term. I think it's best if he stays down in the minors and pressure is taken off both him and the front office to call him up as he works on a new pitch.
  15. The Twins had no reason to expect Mike Pelfrey to start throwing at 90mph with no control. He finished out the second half of last season throwing 92+ with decent control. There was no reason to expect Mike Pelfrey to be this bad or to throw this slowly based on how he performed last season outside of "I hate Mike Pelfrey". Mike Pelfrey, at his best, is a decent back-of-the-rotation guy. Teams need those guys to fill out a rotation, though the second year was baffling (and that's my problem with the entire situation). If the Twins signed Mike Pelfrey and sat on their hands, I would have been furious. They didn't do that. They picked up a decent #2/3, a reclamation project with big upside, and then they picked up Pelfrey. Considering their rotation woes last season and how many pitchers they ran through the rotation, I won't criticize them for being overly cautious and padding the back of the rotation a bit to prevent running out multiple AAAA guys at once. But the second year shouldn't have been offered. It just shouldn't. Anyway, back to my point about assuming incompetence from the front office with trite statements. It's not clever and it doesn't add anything to the conversation. Instead of moaning about the front office's supposed incompetence, why not offer a solution for what you'd like to see happen? Isn't that pretty obviously the point of this thread in the first place?
  16. Reports are that Arcia still has wrist soreness. I think the Twins will call him up the moment they're comfortable with his health. I can deal with an OF of Arcia/Parmelee/Hicks/Fuld for the time being. It'd be nice if they could send down Hicks and acquire another 4th OF type who can play center but I don't know of anyone who is available right now.
  17. My point is that you don't write off a player five years ahead of time. I don't believe it's in the team's best interests to sign him to an extension right now but I'm not writing off the possibility of doing it, either. Dozier is showing the kind of discipline and power that doesn't typically evaporate once a player reaches 30. If he continues to hit for the next 12-14 months, extending him might not be a bad idea.
  18. I'd say Kevin Correia has lost one game to the Red Sox so far. Let's not gloss over that the Twins gave up nine runs last night. Unless I missed something, David Ortiz did not hit nine homers in last night's game.
  19. Not everything has been a misstep. They didn't hesitate to give Gibson a spot in the rotation out of Spring Training. They've been playing Pinto regularly. Arcia had a starting spot before the injury. They pulled the plug on Pelfrey pretty quickly and replaced him with Deduno. I understand that the Twins have bungled several bench roles this season but honestly, it gets really tiring to see people use their back-of-the-bench decisions to invalidate the things they've done right this season. It shouldn't work that way. Feel free to criticize the Twins for doing stupid things. The fans and media should do that but not at the expense of ignoring the things they've done right. Give credit where credit is due. The Twins have made some aggressive moves this season that helped the team, just as they've made some dumb decisions that cost the team some games.
  20. If Pelfrey is throwing 92+ mph, he has value. I won't mind at all if the Twins bring him back if he's healthy and productive.
  21. A bad decision, to be sure... But one that has much less impact than a starting pitcher. They didn't hesitate to make room for Parmelee when the need arose. I think they'll do the same if Correia continues to struggle.
  22. It's slightly more complicated than that. Ortiz was constantly injured and the Twins were stacked with left-handed bats. LeCroy was steamrolling MiLB pitching and hit right-handed. It was likely a baseball decision, though it was a bad one.
  23. I don't think the Twins are in any hurry to bring back Mike Pelfrey, particularly if he struggles with velocity in AAA. This team is 18-20 and in a much stronger position than last season to stay in the hunt. I think the Twins will start getting more aggressive to put quality players on the field over struggling veterans, which is why I think Correia will be gone after two more starts if he continues to struggle. Though I'm sure we'll see Mike Pelfrey in a Twins uniform again at some point.
  24. I think it all depends on May. If he throws two more good starts, that would put four of his last five starts as quality. I think that might be enough to get the call.
  25. I agree that he probably won't be this good at age 32 but many people said Dozier wouldn't be better than he was last season, too.
