  1. Torii Hunter seems to have taken to Aaron Hicks almost immediately, joking around with the younger player and teaching him a few tips and tricks. Can the veteran help right the Aaron Hicks ship? Hunter Needling Hicks Halsey Hall continues to report on the happenings in Ft Myers as Twins players start filing into the complex and taking early practice before pitchers and catchers officially report next week. Hammond Happenings Baseball has been struggling with ever-increasing length of games. Fox Sports contributor Russell Carleton asks the question “What if we changed the rules?” and lively debate ensued. What do you think, if anything, MLB should do about the length of games? 2. The problem with lack of discipline is that it's only exacerbated the further up the MiLB ladder you go. And then you get to MLB, where even some of the most disciplined MiLB hitters fail miserably. So yeah, not having discipline with that kind of power in A+ ball is a major problem. If a dude in the FSL league can't draw a walk when the pitchers are terrified he's going to hit the ball 800 ft, that's a cause for serious concern. You do not rush that guy or push him up levels just because chicks dig the long ball.
  3. Has Scott Ullger moved to the Twins' training staff?
  4. If it was an outlier, Dozier has been an outlier for around 1,100 plate appearances now. I question whether the home run power will stick around - those homers may turn into doubles instead - but the rest of his peripherals are rock-solid.
  5. The way I originally read the rule, that was true... If the batter has to be in the box before the "pitch clock" starts then a rule change is required, albeit it an extremely minor rule change. Basically, the deletion of a single sentence.
  6. Kirby Puckett career WAR (as you said, started his career at age 24): 50 WAR Mike Trout career WAR through his age 22 season: 28 WAR
  7. True. A simple rule change would fix this if both conditions need to be met. Simply remove the batter from the equation. The pitcher has to deliver the ball within 12 seconds of receiving the ball.
  8. Ah, I missed that second part: "The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher." And read this: "When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball." Those two statements don't make a lot of sense next to each other. Does the 12 second timer start when the pitcher receives the ball or when the batter steps into the box?
  9. None of those guys are ready so who plays RF in the first half of the season? It's a stretch to assume any of those guys will be ready in the second half of the season, too... You'd have a point if Hunter was signed to a two year deal. He's gone after this season. He's not blocking anyone worth mentioning.
  10. *cue laugh track*
  11. We sometimes overlook the fact that we don't know these kids while Ryan & Co know them quite well (or at least their MiLB coaches know them and pass information to Ryan & Co). Meyer didn't get promoted but Polanco and Santana did last season. Rosario has been mentioned as a possible CF candidate in 2015. There's a lot more to these guys than a stat line and that factors into promotion schedules. That doesn't automatically mean Ryan & Co. are right - obviously, they were very wrong with Hicks - but it does mean they're privy to information we do not have. To us, Rosario seems a bit aloof and out of touch. Not unlike Aaron Hicks, really... But maybe he's entirely different in person. The Twins get to see that difference while we may not.
  12. http://zap2it.tmsimg.com/tvbanners/h5/AllPhotos/184035/p184035_b_h3_aa.jpg
  13. Yep. Basically, the batter is allowed to step out between pitches. The one exception is if the pitcher is stalling, the batter may call time and step out again. But if the pitcher has to deliver the pitch in 12 seconds, then the batter has to be back in the box and ready and the pitcher can't stall so the batter cannot call time and step out again. Again, this issue goes away entirely if the 12 second rule is enforced. The fix to this problem is so maddeningly simple that I can't believe it's a point of discussion, really.
  14. Polanco isn't too valuable to give up but I'd hesitate to give him up for a two month rental. Then again, it all depends on how Polanco does this season. His stock could continue to rise or it could flatten.
  15. At some point, opposing GMs are going to stop letting themselves get hosed by Dombroski, right? The Tigers shouldn't have gotten away with a few of those trades but hey, good for them that they were able to pull it off. I still can't believe they managed to offload that Fielder contract.
  16. Once a batter steps into the box, he may not step out again without reason (for all intents and purposes, the batter shouldn't be allowed to step out 99% of the time). So, in essence, if the 12 second rule is enforced, all of this goes away. The batter has to be in the box when the pitch is delivered and the pitcher has to deliver the pitch within 12 seconds of receiving the ball.
  17. It's not about trying to hit for more power, it's about growing into one's body and swing. If Rosario wants to stick at a corner OF position, he's going to have to be either an OBP machine or he has to hit for power. Rosario is not an OBP machine.
  18. That's enough for me to call the analysis lazy. Plouffe, maybe... But Dozier has been the same player for over 1,100 PAs. Breaking up his numbers by season is so incredibly lazy and inaccurate. Yeah, he might regress... by .030 OPS points. There is literally nothing to indicate he will return to a sub-.700 OPS player. NOTHING.
  19. Yeah, okay, that's fair. My wife clerked for a pretty awesome judge (who actually married us) so my view of judges is probably a bit pie in the sky. But I firmly believe that the average judge is smarter than the average legislator. At least the judge had to pass some kind of test to reach the position. The average legislator is... Well, it's ****ing Congress.
  20. Maybe we should let them play the games before passing judgment.
  21. More importantly, it doesn't mean they'll regress in 2015. For crying out loud, their 2014 corner outfielders were laughably bad and they had a shortstop in center. You can say "they'll stay bad" at that point but you can't actually predict regression because it's really hard to regress from "OMG terrible".
  22. I don't see how anyone could predict this team to actually move backward. Hell, they won 70 last season and underperformed their pythag by several games. Short of literally everything going wrong in 2015, they won't be worse.
  23. Marrying a lawyer has tempered my view on judges a lot. What seems like insanity to us is often rational interpretation of the laws on the books. It's not a judge's job to do what's right, it's their job to interpret laws that are often written by blithering idiots. That doesn't mean that we need to agree with everything they do but it does mean we simply don't understand all the intricacies of the situation much of the time.
  24. My favorite is the throw to first with Miguel Cabrera occupying the base. Strategy.
  25. I agree with Thyrlos completely! http://www.troll.me/images/keanu-reeves-conspiracy/whoa-thumb.jpg
