  1. Wow. Molitor ain't screwing around tonight.
  2. Well, I don't like the idea of building what is, in my opinion, a backwards pitching staff. I firmly believe that generally, the smartest route is to keep your best pitchers in the rotation... But the Twins have put themselves in quite a position with their current pen and this might be the only way to change that internally. If I ran the team, I would have aggressively replaced relievers earlier in the season but that didn't happen so here we are today.
  3. In the long run, I completely agree but right now, the team is handing away far too many games in late innings. May could stop that bleeding immediately. I'm doubtful whether Pelfrey or Milone would have the same effect.
  4. I agree it feels that way with Pelfrey but I don't see why the Twins would cater to Milone. They didn't hesitate to demote the guy earlier in the season.
  5. I'm not convinced it's that dumb. Yeah, in a perfect world you want May in the rotation and he's not the worst starter by any measure... But right now, the rotation is serviceable. The bullpen is not. It's possible that this is the biggest net gain for the team because it gives Molitor three good to great strikeout pitchers to go 7-8-9 and shut down games. Kansas City has used the model "serviceable rotation, ferocious bullpen" for a few years and it has worked brilliantly for them.
  6. That's what I expected to happen. Not really sure how I feel about it. I want May in the rotation but he could be a fierce bullpen arm and the Twins need that in a big way.
  7. You just listed reasons why I'm not adamant about it. My opinion is that when you're in the 10th/11th innings, you start to go all-in and try to win the game as quickly as possible. That's my personal approach but I realize it's not the only way to approach a game.
  8. I'm not as adamant about it as some but the Twins needed a K and didn't use their only reliever who excels at getting them in a crucial moment. IMO, he should have started warming after the lead off double.
  9. Absolutely. This has been a great thread and the disagreement over nuance is what made it great.
  10. As if on cue, the first measles death in over a decade was just reported. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/07/02/measles-death-washington-state/29624385/
  11. The problem with metrics (I generally agree with your thinking on this subject) is that they cannot equate for the human factor of baseball. Sometimes, that counts and is displayed in the box scores of games. Metrics are good predictors of future performance but they're not the only reason a decision should be made. Sometimes, a guy has a hot hand and you just go with it, metrics be damned. In the long game, the metrics will prove more accurate. Right now, the Twins aren't playing a long game. I'm not saying that's the case in this situation because I have no evidence to support it... People who are on-hand have to make that kind decision. I only hope they make the right call.
  12. Going into a four game series in KC and walking out with a series win would be huge. I had secretly resigned myself to June starting the "big slide" but a small glimmer of hope is rekindling.
  13. It is a legitimate opinion. There's no need to be hostile with someone over preferred methods of analyzing player performance. It's not like he's countering your advanced metrics with "wins and grit".
  14. If a conversation changes organically, we do not interfere. Conversations can veer in any direction they like, provided that change is conversation-driven, not troll-driven.
  15. That's what I meant with "stayed with the team" though I should have phrased it better. Lawton, Hawkins, Radke were under team control, stayed with the team, or were involuntarily traded. 2015 is a pleasant surprise but I don't see a lot of comparison to the 2001 squad. The 2016 squad will probably look more like 2001. Most of the 2001 squad were introduced to MLB from 98-00 and emerged as quality players in 2001. The 2015 squad is full of a bunch of rookies who haven't made much of an impact yet. Most of the impact is coming from veterans like Hunter, Plouffe, Pelfrey, Perkins, and Dozier, who are either having a career Renaissance or have been good players for a few years already. Gibson is the only guy who aligns with the 2001 roster.
  16. I hadn't looked up the stats but the moment Santana faltered, it seemed like a gimme decision to put Escobar at short.
  17. Yeah, I recall Polanco and Kepler being well regarded but they weren't can't miss guys like Sano. Unless my memory is broken, I don't think either got even $1m.
  18. 2001 had a lot more young impact players who carried the team or players who stayed with the team. The 2001 squad didn't have expiring vets like Pelfrey and Hunter... At least that's how I remember it.
  19. I hope the Twins go big this year. It'd be a sound strategy because the CBA will likely change and if they buy several high profile prospects, there's a good chance they'll be coming to Minnesota just as the current crop of prospects are pricing themselves off the team.
  20. I prefer a mix. While I'm all in favor of going big when you feel it's the right guy, I think a more solid approach is to cast the net wide and pick up a lot of "hey, this kid looks really good" players when the field looks like less of a sure thing. These are 16-17 year old kids. The wider you cast the net, the more likely you are to find a diamond in the rough... Unless, of course, there's a kid you absolutely must have at any price.
  21. It's not our fault that all you clowns live outside the TC metro area and can't take us up on free tickets to events.
  22. I agree that it never needed to happen in the first place. My comment was more about how long it took to reverse the mistake.
