  1. If noticed the same thing. Without digging into the numbers, I'm going to write it off as "young players doing stupid things". A good example was Rosario's steal of second in The Comeback Game. That steal attempt was moronic and there's no way Molitor called for it.
  2. I think it'll be close. A few games up or down from .500 from here on out... My nagging realistic side says it'll be down.
  3. 84 wins. No playoffs because the kids falter down the stretch. I still consider that outcome a HUGE win for Ryan and Molitor.
  4. Definitely. I'm not taking away anything from Dozier but I've been watching baseball for 30 years and I don't think I've ever seen a ballplayer as flawless as Trout. He has a career OPS of .956, an isoD of nearly .100, a career batting average over .300, can steal 40 bags (if he feels like it), and plays Gold Glove up-the-middle defense. He's not ****ing human.
  5. Until Mike Trout stops being Mike Trout, he's the AL MVP. The guy is on pace for another 10 WAR season.
  6. I didn't even watch the game and I'm still floored. I need to fire up this game.
  7. I stopped following the game in the seventh because obvious loss is obvious. Holy ****. That happened?
  8. Maybe I'm totally off base here but I don't believe the manager calls a specific pitch in any circumstance. If anyone on the bench would do that - and I don't think they do - it would be Allen. My understanding is that managers and coaches call large scale game maneuvers, not specific pitches.
  9. Good analysis all around but I think it's a bit unfair to compare Pelfrey to Price and say "he needs to make that pitch". If Pelfrey was capable of being David Price on a nightly basis, he'd be paid a hell of a lot more than $5m. Mike Pelfrey, at his very best, is a #3 starter. On a nightly basis, the good Mike Pelfrey is more like a #4, maybe even a #5. The bad Mike Pelfrey, well... We all know what he is. Anyway, expecting a #3/4/5 starter to match Price's 2 ER isn't reasonable. Pelfrey did his job and it was up to the offense and bullpen to help him out a little. They didn't.
  10. That's fair. But it's not as if a tie game was suddenly thrust upon Molitor. He could have planned it out a bit and got May in there easily. Based on past experience, he would have used Perkins in the ninth at home in a tie game. Because you can't plan out 3-4 innings, the logical move was to push back Perkins and get May in there for at least one inning, maybe two and go from there. No matter how you examine it, putting a guy who can't miss bats in over all of those guys was sloppy management. Boyer should have been an 11th inning last resort, not the first choice.
  11. It's not a solution. There were several ways to get May into that game - he's pitched one day of the last nine - and none of them were used. In a bullpen as shoddy as the Twins, they can't afford to waste an arm as talented as May. I don't care how you get him in a game but he needs to get in there at some point. If that means pulling Pelfrey after seven so May can start the eighth fresh and pitch two innings, that's fine.
  12. Hard to argue with this. And May could have walked the first batter as "warmup". It wouldn't have mattered.
  13. Yeah, Boyer is fine as a sixth inning, maybe even a seventh inning guy in a pinch but he's the type of reliever you bring on to start an inning because he can't miss bats and that will lead to runs if guys are on base when he toes the rubber.
  14. When you get right down to it, what grates on me the most about that game is Molitor's management of it. The score is 3-2 and maybe should be 2-2 because Pelfrey should have been pulled after seven. Whatever, so it's 3-2 and you have six outs to score one run. That's manageable. A guy is on second base. A walk doesn't matter. All you need to do is get one out and if you can avoid putting the ball in play, the chances of getting that out go higher. So Molitor calls on the guy who puts the ball in play more than anybody else on the team. A guy who hasn't been very good recently. He doesn't call on May, Fien, or even Graham. Instead, he calls on the right-handed reliever who is most ill-equipped to get out of that inning without allowing a run. I like Molitor. I like a lot of what he's done but that's some pretty shoddy management right there.
  15. He didn't give up four runs. He left the game with three runs on the board and the fourth run was entirely preventable. So an arbitrary statistics says he gave up four runs. That doesn't matter to me and it shows the weakness of the ERA stat in extremely small sample sizes, not any weakness of Pelfrey's start (and it shows how utterly useless bullpen ERA can be, actually). It's not like Mike left the game with the bases juiced and no outs. He left the game with a runner on second base and two outs. That's when the bullpen needs to step up and close out the inning by getting one. stinkin'. out. It wasn't a lucky hit. It wasn't a fielding miscue. Boyer got in there and let a guy lace a double against him because Blaine Boyer is not a very good pitcher. I can't blame Mike Pelfrey for Blaine Boyer being bad at baseball.
  16. I'm finishing up the game now and while I wouldn't have called Pelfrey out there for the eighth, I understand Molitor's reluctance to go to the (shoddy) pen. With that said, I will never understand why he called upon Boyer in that situation. Either way, can't pin this one on Pelfrey. He did his job.
  17. He should have given up three runs. If the bullpen is called upon to get a single out with a runner on second, it's their job to execute that task. As we've seen far too often in the past month, the Twins offense and bullpen failed to come through with a win after the starter did his job. Whether Pelfrey should have been out there for the eighth or not, if a guy pitches 7 2/3 innings and allows three runs, the team should win that game.
  18. I don't fault a guy for starting to struggle in the eighth inning. That's when the bullpen should step into the game and shut it down. That's their job.
  19. If they have plans to put May back into the rotation after the break because they want to keep his arm fresh, I'm fine with that. I only worry that we'll reach the end of July, Trevor won't be in the rotation, and he'll only pitch junk innings out of the pen. That's such a waste of his talent.
  20. I'm watching the game now and that comment is really unfair (and you probably know it). Pelfrey pitched a pretty good game. He limited the Tigers to three runs over 7 2/3 innings. That fourth run is all on Boyer. He had one job to do and he failed to execute. Pelfrey wasn't amazing but there's no way you can watch that game and pin the loss on him. He did his job.
  21. That's possible. This singular instance doesn't bother me as much as concern over whether they plan to use him in a long role and not during critical moments (read 7/8/9 innings) of games.
  22. I would be thrilled with a one and out in the playoffs this season. I'll be thrilled if they win 85 games and miss the second WC spot by a game.
  23. No, but he has only appeared in one game where he could make a difference, and he did. In that situation with two outs, you want a guy who doesn't put the ball in play. Blaine Boyer is not that guy. Trevor May is. That fourth run shouldn't have scored.
  24. I am wondering the same thing.
  25. I didn't get to see his start but the box line looks pretty good.
