  1. Yep, I was pretty mad about it when it happened.
  2. I'm pretty sure it's no longer a coin flip but yes, that's how they used to do it.
  3. I also hope Joe's kid doesn't freeze his head in a cryogenic tank.
  4. I was pretty high on Escobar but thought he had a very small chance of repeating last year's success. Either way, I was trumpeting him at short in May because, like you said, he's steady with the glove and looked to have modest upside with the bat. I am very happy to be wrong about his upside with the bat. He's doing exactly what he did last year. I'm still not entirely sold on him as a starter but damn it all, he deserves the job out of ST. The guy has compiled roughly a full season's worth of PAs at the position and his bat has been way above average during that time.
  5. Perkins in entrenched as the closer provided he doesn't implode... And I'm okay with that. Given the role of the "closer" in baseball, I've come to the opinion your best reliever should not be the closer. Coming into a fresh inning with the bases empty and a 2-3 run lead is going to result in a win the vast majority of the time with even a mediocre guy in the closer role. So if no one in baseball is going to use a true Bullpen Ace model, the best guy on the staff should be used in the seventh or eighth innings depending on the game, ready to come in with runners on base during a critical situation (or even a fresh inning with the heart of the lineup coming to the plate). Put your second-best guy in the "closer" role and go with a quasi bullpen ace model.
  6. That was the last long road trip for the Twins this season (one road trip left, a seven game set). They had to square off against Houston, Kansas City, and the bad half of Chicago. 5-4 with a 3-3 record against KC and Houston on the road. The Twins are somehow still in this thing and they continue to win ballgames. They might actually have a shot at this thing. I'm still not sure how that happened, but it happened. 13 home games remaining with only seven more road games to play.
  7. So, hey everybody. Chris Sale.
  8. I really disagree. Getting to play a depleted WC team with home field through the ALCS is definitely worth playing hard until the last out of the season. Under the new WC rules, the one seed has a huge advantage over previous years.
  9. When did this begin? Just a few weeks ago, I take it?
  10. Hmmm. Okay, I will review which networks run on mobile and send them nasty emails. BTW, is anyone getting this on a phone or is it iPad/tablet-only? That matters because we run different themes and networks for the different versions of the site.
  11. Absolutely. The only thing Hu seems to have struggled with a bit is walks. Given his history, that's probably not an issue going forward.
  12. Yeah, that's why I didn't even mention the ERA. A .407 BABIP is going to sting any pitcher over a short period of time.
  13. Whoever wrote that tweet should consider applying for a job at Fox News. "Plouffe doesn't high five Rosario. Does Eddie have AIDS? Is he a leper? Did he hit on Trevor's wife? Hey, I'm only asking a question here, I'm not drawing any conclusions or leading the conversation." /endrant Really, though, I think this probably means nothing. Or Trevor could despise Eddie Rosario because people with oddly-shaped ears freak him out. I have no idea, nor do I really care.
  14. I disagree on this point. I think it's more important for the Jays/Yankees to beat each other up. Whichever team is behind the other is the one I'm cheering for this weekend. I want to see the Royals walk away with the one seed before September concludes. I think the final series with the Royals is more important than the Yankees sliding back into the WC race, which is extremely unlikely to happen. The Yankees are 3.5 up on Texas, putting them 4.5 up on the Twins. Given that the Yankees are the only legitimate AL East contender in the WC, the chances of them fading back to the pack are small. There are no head-to-head matchups that will guarantee +/- one game in a single night. Once New York gets past the Jays series, they face no legitimate AL contenders and their only tough series is against the Mets. The only teams the Twins should be worried about right now are the Rangers and Angels. Everyone else is far enough back where their chances of making the postseason are in the low single digits.
  15. A bit late but here's the PED policy: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/pdf/jda.pdf
  16. It was an easy mistake to make. The game 163 stipulation exists but only for players under a 162 game suspension, which makes sense. A player can't be suspended for an entire season and then get to appear for a single game playoff.
  17. Still up in the air AFAIK but personally, I'm convinced Berardino is wrong. I can't find any mention of that policy in the MLB rule book.
  18. Well, he struggled with control in the regular season and was hit with the BABIP bug. But it was four starts so it doesn't really matter.
  19. Yep. I think it's a pretty good idea. at this point in the season, most guys are feeling some kind of pain. Given the overall equity of all the pitchers in the rotation, swapping out guys who are wearing down isn't going to have much of an impact.
  20. Someone should let Cleveland know that, for all intents and purposes, they're out of the playoff picture. I'd very much like for them to lie down and die before the Twins play them again.
  21. While I don't disagree with this point when speaking in generalities, 2015 Trevor May is, at worst, a similar pitcher to 2015 James Shields. He's probably a touch better but I'll defer to Shields' ability to eat innings and call it a wash. Tyler Duffey, while SSS abounds, has been better than both. And Jose Berrios is more talented than either May or Duffey. So, yeah... I just can't see what Shields brings to the table here. James Shields of 3-4 years ago, yeah. He was a very good pitcher but we're talking about 2016 James Shields, not 2012 James Shields. I don't want 2016 James Shields that much and I want absolutely nothing to do with 2018 James Shields. The Twins need to focus on removing expiring contracts, not trade them away for even longer contracts to the likes of Reyes or Shields.
  22. Agreed. 2004 was the infamous Nathan three inning game, wasn't it?
  23. Ugh. Past postseason performance means nothing when you're trying to predict future performance. I remember hearing people yell about how awful Barry Bonds was in the postseason. He's a choker! The Giants will go nowhere! Bonds will collapse! Gnashing of teeth! Bonds proceeded to post a 1.446 OPS (!) between the 2002 and 2003 postseasons. So yeah, playoffs. *yawn* Is the guy good in the regular season? Yes? Then go get that guy. Is the guy bad in the regular season? Yes? Then don't get that guy. It's that simple.
  24. Mike Pelfrey routinely goes through a lineup 4, 5, or even 6 times in five innings. I don't see the problem here.
  25. Shields is down 1mph across the board. It's possible he's banged up a bit but what's more likely is he's just getting old. No thanks, pass. The Twins need fewer 32+ year old starters, not another one tacked on for three more seasons. He's still a decent pitcher but the Twins should be aiming higher than that with new acquisitions.
