  1. Yep, though it's fair to point out that value is only seen if the team is sold. If the Pohlads hang on to the Twins forever, their "profit" is zero (assuming they spend every dollar they acquire in revenue).
  2. They're definitely a mid-market team but probably on the small side of mid-market. The Twins population coverage is pretty good but IIRC, its population skews on the low side of cable subscribers relative to its population (a flaw in the first half of this article, as it only mentions "television homes", not "cable subscriber homes"). The second half of the article is spot-on, though. Given how much money comes from television contracts, that's a significant thing to note*. *in no way is this a defense of the Twins' current payroll
  3. This is the overall piece, BTW.
  4. Nope, it was intentional. Everyone knows Paul is a lefty. (really though, it was done because a right-handed catcher didn't work in the composition of the overall drawing... his back would have been turned to the viewer)
  5. Damn. If he's in the best shape of his life right now, I can only imagine how much he'll be in shape by the end of February when reporters show up to Spring Training.
  6. Well said.
  7. With that said, this case stunk. I think a thorough investigation should begin to look into whether things were handled above-board and I feel Steve Avery probably deserves a new trial because, again, this case stunk. I literally question everything about this case. It's not that I trust the police and courts and distrust Avery or the documentarians, it's that I trust no one involved in the situation because everyone has shown at one point or another that they do not deserve my trust.
  8. Yes. Yes. I don't feel my argument is complicated. Based on only the documentary, Avery looks to have easily crossed the reasonable doubt threshold. That doesn't mean he achieved reasonable doubt status in the seven week long court case because we didn't get to see the case, not even a few minutes of it.
  9. I suspect he starts in right for the reasons you listed but really, it could go either direction depending whether they decide to put Rosario in left or center.
  10. Yeah, Lucroy is damned good if healthy. Don't underrate the guy. Before his injury-riddled 2015 season, he had an OPS around .830 the previous three seasons.
  11. Imagine a world where Gardenhire has returned to managing an MLB team and rosters expand to include three "idle" players on the roster. He could go an entire decade without putting a single player on the Disabled List. It'd be a thing of beauty.
  12. Ryan wanted to see if they could handle the pressure. Or something.
  13. I'm against the day-in, day-out expansion of rosters but going with a 28 man roster with three sitting out on any given day seems like a reasonable compromise... Though I still question the need for three players to sit. Move the rosters to 26 or 27 and let 1-2 guys sit on any given day.
  14. I also went in with absurdly high expectations, which was too bad. My view of the movie was tainted by people going insane over the film when it should have just been a fun, rollicking movie. I still liked the film a lot but people were trying to make the movie into something it's really not (some high-minded feminist political piece). Sometimes, it's okay to just say "good on you, filmmakers, you showed me a different take on action movies" without trying to turn a ****ing insane action movie into a political talking point. I thought the movie's anti-patriarchal points were great fun and an added twist to an already fun movie but I'm not going to grant the movie some kind of vaunted status for doing stuff we should have done 30 years ago, nor is the movie truly "better" for it. It grants the movie footnote status in history, maybe, but it doesn't make the film substantially better from a storytelling aspect in the here and now, certainly not to the extent it was played up in some circles.
  15. Eh, it was whatever. It's one of the early examples of shaky cam gone wild. It was an enjoyable film on some levels but mostly forgettable.
  16. While we're talking about upcoming films, have you guys seen the trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane? It's a fantastic trailer. It tells a compelling narrative without a single line of dialogue... And then he speaks at the end and kinda ruins it. Still, fantastic use of music to accompany the trailer's descent into darkness. I've watched the trailer two dozen times because it's a classic example of "show, don't tell" done right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQy-ANhnUpE
  17. Well, thankfully Snyder is not directing SS. That gives me a little hope the movie will at least be in color.
  18. I loved the movie and thought it was a lot of fun. The editing style made it watchable... It's over-the-top but not in a Michael Bay "WTF IS HAPPENING WHY IS THE CAMERA SPINNING BACK AND FORTH SO MUCH" sort of way. By keeping the focal plane consistent and the action in the center of the screen, it could cut scenes extremely quickly and the audience could keep up with the visuals. That led to a bonkers feel for the movie without going into incomprehensible territory. Not that Suicide Squad should emulate that visual feel... But it was interesting for Fury Road.
  19. Hot Girls Wanted was decent. An interesting view of the "amateur" porn industry and how it uses people.
  20. If you say so. I look at the Tigers and see an old team. Old teams often underperform. If that's an unreasonable narrative, so be it.
  21. I'm cautiously optimistic about that film but I don't trust Time Warner to understand their own characters well enough to pull off the level of absurd that movie deserves. Suicide Squad should be an insane romp in the vein of Fury Road or Deadpool... The trailer looks promising but I'm skeptical TW has the guts to push the envelope as far as they should with the film.
  22. I couldn't even finish Battle of the Five Armies because I simply did not care about anything happening on-screen. Peter Jackson has slowly forgotten what an editor is and the role they play in a film/story. It started with the LotR trilogy but the movies were so ****ing awesome, audiences ate it up despite the fact there's a lot of unnecessary crap in those films (which I've watched 30-40+ times apiece). Then real problems started arising in King Kong, where I sat through entire scenes and said "that didn't need to be there" and "nope, I don't care about that, either". By the time The Hobbit movies rolled around, he had forgotten what the word "edit" meant entirely. Whatever gibberish he dreamed up in his mind made it on screen. I remember sitting in the first Hobbit film and muttering "holy ****, this scene is terrible" during the underground orc bridge/cart whatever the **** was happening" scene. Which is too bad because the Bilbo/Gollum ring scene was one of the best scenes of any of Jackson's Tolkien adaptation films.
  23. You can't just add time to a story and expect more awesome to happen. There are ebbs and flows to the pacing of a story that are potentially ruined by just tacking on 10 minutes here and there throughout the film. Never mind that character roles may be swapped, arcs changed, etc. by removing two characters and increasing the screen time of three others. Instead of New Character X stealing the plans to Bad Guy's Death Weapon Y, you hand that role to Finn or Rey because it more tightly integrates Finn/Rey into the narrative you're attempting to weave, upping their importance and drama to the main story arc. I have no problems with a three hour film if the film should be three hours and the story fits the wave pattern of a three hour film.
  24. Well, sure... But there are very few 2011 Twins in baseball. Things went badly for the 2015 Tigers but the 2011 Twins were a colossal train wreck. If something could go wrong, it did, and in spectacular fashion. That's why the 2015 Tigers won 11 more games than the 2011 Twins.
