  1. Six of one, half dozen of the other. There's no way this team wins without the young players picking it up. Every young player has failed to some degree (which also could be, at least partially, on the coaching staff). But that doesn't excuse the bullpen and roster decisions. Everyone gets a lot of blame for this season.
  2. 1. Maybe not totally hindsight but still a terrible, awful idea. The likelihood of Desmond earning you back a comp pick was quite low (again, four years of decline). And even if you get a comp pick back, you lose 10+ slots and pick in the sandwich round. Instead of picking 15th, the Twins pick between 25-35 the following year. This notion is a wildly risky move and even if you win, you still kinda lose. Most people refer to that as a "terrible idea". 2. I agree that Park is still the most confusing part of this offseason. I'm still not convinced they even wanted to win the bid.
  3. Dunno. As long as Evangelicals continue to whip up their base into a fervor over social issues, I don't think the divide can be closed. Maybe at some point Evangelicals run out of issues to whip up their base after they've lost every social battle?
  4. Yeah, Ted Cruz is a continuation of the doubling down of extreme right ideas the GOP has been building upon for the past two decades. It's not a new direction, it's the old direction, only moreso.
  5. With 2 1/2 seasons left on his contract, I doubt Santana will return much, if anything, at the deadline. Especially considering the seasons he's having. I'd prefer to see Nolasco be moved or waived at whatever cost that requires. The same goes for Milone.
  6. Given that Plouffe's DL stint means Sano will play third (almost) every day, it makes sense to call up a different guy to DH and Vargas is next in line. I won't fault the Twins for doing something logical... Those moves have been few and far between this season.
  7. I disagree. Did the 2015 team benefit from luck? Sure, of course they did... But they were in the thick of the race when many of us were clamoring for more bullpen pieces (its inevitable implosion was nearly assured). We argued over the details: I didn't want the Twins to go big on anyone, others felt differently... But most of us agreed that the bullpen was a huge problem long before the trade deadline (as in two months prior to the deadline). Then this happened between July 18th to August 17th. 8.10 ERA, 10 IP, 18 H, 3 BB, 7 SO. That's Glen Perkins' stat line. He had two blown saves and two losses during that time. Four games. The Twins missed the postseason by three games. Had Ryan actually attempted to shore up the bullpen in June (or, as some of us were screaming, May), the Twins could easily have stopped at least two of their major losing streaks in 2015 and it's possible the season ends quite differently. Jepsen did a fine job in 2015 but he was too little, too late. The bullpen needed a shot in the arm no later than June 1st, not July 31st.
  8. Stephen Drew. It wasn't a low risk move. Not even a little bit. If the Rangers hadn't already given up picks, no way do they pursue Desmond. Ian Desmond was on a FOUR year offensive slide going into this season. He's a middle infielder. He's 30. Come on.
  9. There are definitely reasons to overhaul this team but... Be reasonable. If Ryan moves 3-4 guys this deadline, good. If he moves 2, not quite as good but acceptable. But expecting a team to turn over half their 25 man in a month is simply not going to happen.
  10. As much as I think a Dozier trade should be explored, it's unlikely he's a deadline guy. If he's to be moved, it will probably happen in the offseason
  11. While there is plenty to complain about, I think lambasting the Twins for not picking up Desmond is near the bottom of the list. Desmond was going into his age 30 season and had been on a steady decline for a few years. To give up your first round pick for a roll of the dice (probably on no more than a two year deal) is bad management. Desmond was as likely, if not more so, to turn into Stephen Drew than have a rebound year. And baseball is usually about playing the odds, particularly when the stakes include losing your first round pick. We don't need to manufacture outrage. There's plenty of real stuff to get mad about.
  12. No, he's not. Dozier has, once again, turned into an elite second baseman. Yes, he's streaky. That's somewhat unfortunate but he still posts the numbers. The question isn't whether Polanco is better today; he's not. The question is whether Polanco + prospects are better in 2018, maybe even 2017. And suspect that answer is "yes".
  13. I think the odds of Britain leaving are no higher than 1:1. The country got a hard dose of reality the day after and the EU playing hardball over freedom of movement deflates the worst part of the movement.
  14. If we're talking peak years, Pedro. 1999-2000. Seriously. Video game ****. Career? Eh, dunno. Maybe Maddux. Have to think about it more.
  15. Jose Canseco approves of this video.
  16. It's not anecdotal when we've all watched Arcia blunder around the OF for a couple thousand innings. The guy is a butcher out there. We've all seen it.
  17. You might be right... The only chance for the Hound and Arya to meet up is in the next couple of episodes. They're in approximately the same area though moving in different directions.
  18. We all know the Hound is going to take down the Mountain. After that happens, I could see the Hound asking Arya to kill him. I doubt she does, though. I suspect the Hound will be Arya's redemption moment in some fashion or another.
  19. On top of that, it was a classic sacrifice. Syrio had no intention of winning, only to stall for time.
  20. If you plan to move outside the org with a new general manager - and the Twins should do just that - the guy is going to want to pick his own manager. That puts Mientkiewicz in a bad spot. If you plan to find a new GM, let it ride.
  21. Yeah, pretty much this. It's hard enough to find a GM in the offseason... Doing it in the middle of a season has to be harder. Hell, I don't even know if other teams would allow you to speak to their personnel during the season. And there's no point in firing the manager in a lost season if you're planning to can the GM at the end of the season.
  22. All he needs to do is become a decent MLB strong side platoon for this to be a horrible decision.
  23. Yeah, I said something like that. King's Landing won the war for the North for two reasons: they had Highgarden's army and the Freys betrayed the Starks. Well, Highgarden now wants Lannister heads on pikes and Walder Frey is dead. So, yeah, King's Landing.
  24. Come on, Howie, you're reaching. Alex Meyer has a total of 6.2 MLB innings across two seasons. Neil Ramirez has 7.0 IP this season for the Twins, much less other teams.
