  1. Yeah, there's the possibility of a few arms emerging but based on the list above, Romero is the only guy I see with real promise as a starter. And I'd struggle to consider even him a "top prospect". He's an interesting arm, the kind that could break out and dominate but he's certainly not to that point yet.
  2. Actually, in pretty much everyone's world. How many of those guys have been listed in top 100 lists and are expected to be listed again after the 2017 season? I see the possibility of Romero and no one else.
  3. It's a bit of an aside but until Thorpe pitches again, I think we need to keep him off any future lists. The guy has been out forever and a day. And once you trim Lewis off that list, I see Romero and a bunch of guys that don't impress me much (not including Berrios because he's already in Minnesota). It's nice depth to have but not exactly the type of thing I'm going to get excited about.
  4. Is Gordon turning into an elite prospect? We're up to 158 PAs of .850 OPS baseball and he's always been considered a polished defender at short. I always considered Gordon something of a high floor, low ceiling guy relative to his draft position but I'm starting to think I was wrong in the good way. Including a truncated first month after the draft, Gordon has four months of .800+ OPS baseball in his professional career. Provided he doesn't completely collapse in the next two weeks, two of those months are April and May of 2017.
  5. I'm banking the wins as well but they're only four games over .500. That can be wiped away with one long series where the pitching tanks. I don't think they'll drop to 75 unless the pitching staff implodes, just as I don't think they'll rise to 85 unless it stabilizes. Santana should be good, Santiago should be decent, and that 3-4 game swing from .500 rides mostly on Berrios, IMO.
  6. I'm still cautious and haven't moved them from between 75 and 85 wins. So much rides on the arm of Berrios. He could be worth five wins by himself because the options behind him are that bad. And Mejia/Gibson are worth nearly that much as well. Those three guys will likely decide whether this is a winning or losing season (injuries excepted). I think the bullpen will manage to hold its own. Maybe a bit below average but I expect something to be done about it in relatively short order. Whether that's Burdi, Melotakis, trade, whatever, I don't know.
  7. Yeah, this is pretty much my take as well. Maybe "staff leader" is a good phrase for it; a veteran that posts good numbers and helps establish the younger guys. In a perfect world, you'd like a third pitcher slotted somewhere ahead of Santana and possibly Berrios but if both can post ERAs south of 4.00 for the season, the Twins should do pretty well for themselves considering the offense.
  8. Any update on Thorpe? I can't find anything.
  9. I look up and down this lineup and I see lots of 25-and-under players, all of which are doing their job at the plate. The lone exception is Buxton, who still appears to be adjusting. So, no, I don't see how the Twins are failing to teach their young hitters. Most of their young hitters look pretty good.
  10. We're only 20% of the way through the season but it will be interesting to see when players begin to get the call to Minnesota. Berrios has been recalled. Mejia started on the Opening Day roster but didn't get much of a shot at the rotation. Here are some previous callups with first appearance date (ignoring September cups of coffee). Pitchers: Trevor May - August 9 Kyle Gibson - June 29 Hitters: Miguel Sano - July 2 Byron Buxton - June 14 Max Kepler - April 10 Eddie Rosario - May 10
  11. It's kind of hard to fault the Twins for preaching the "Twins Way" when it was the Twins coaching staff - Brunansky in particuar - that changed Dozier's swing and turned him into the hitter he became in 2013. The Twins haven't hammered away at the "hit oppo" approach in years. Look at the players they've had in the past 6-7 years: Dozier, Plouffe, Sano, et al. They all derive most of their power from pulling the ball while Plouffe and Dozier were dead pull hitters. Sano is just so strong that no matter where he hits the ball, it has a decent chance of leaving the park.
  12. It's possible they don't move Gordon that quickly but if they promote him in late June or early July, he will have accumulated ~300 PAs in Chattanooga. That's a pretty typical promotion schedule for a guy who is OPSing over .800 and was a first round draft pick (of course, this assumes he will continue to dominate the level).
  13. It's a somewhat large gripe simply in the context that I didn't expect (or even really want) the front office to pursue anyone else in free agency. The rotation pickings were absurdly thin and the Twins lineup needed space to let the young guys play. Which is why I'm happy the team didn't get Napoli.
  14. And I agree with that. The lack of established bullpen arms was my biggest gripe with the offseason.
  15. I don't mind the idea of Gibson transitioning to the pen but I'd be more comfortable with him starting in Rochester in case things go completely sideways. If Mejia is performing, I think he should get the call next with Gibson waiting in the wings for the inevitable mid-season injury.
  16. The way the Twins are playing right now, I think it's a straight-up fight between Mejia and Gibson. Let it come down to performance and make the decision when you need to make that decision.
  17. I wonder if both of them starting at AA has anything to do with the front office challenging them both to become the next middle infielder in the promotion hierarchy. If you promote Vielma to AAA, then what do you do with Gordon in June? Demote Vielma? Create a AAA platoon? Right now, Gordon is pretty clearly winning that fight. The organization has to be thinking he's at the top of the list when we get to promotion season in June or July.
  18. I hope Burdi is up some time in early June and that he jumps straight from Chattanooga. I understand the hesitation to call him up right now. The guy basically missed all of last season and has 11 appearances in 2017. I'm hoping that he continues to dominate and as that appearance number pushes toward 20, the front office feels comfortable enough that he's really back and Burdi skips a level.
  19. I agree that's the likely outcome, just saying it's early and a lot can change. Given how Hughes has pitched, I think he'll be an acceptable back of the rotation guy, getting through lineups with pure moxy. The wildcard is Mejia. He could be okay, he could be a disaster.
  20. There we have it. The first guy who is literally tired from all this winning.
  21. The last time the Twins were five games over .500 was October of 2015.
  22. As much as we complain about announcers, Provus is a damned fine radio announcer.
  23. So much depends on Berrios and Mejia. Berrios looked good today. If Mejia can be adequate, I'd look at bullpen help first. Though if Burdi is promoted, who knows. Lots of baseball to be played before we know what to do at the deadline.
