  1. Guys who rehab quietly and then enter the club with the idea they're going to knock 30 bombs a year don't exactly break up a "good" clubhouse chemistry. We need to kill the idea that Sano is a bad clubhouse presence.
  2. In the comics (and the movies from what I remember), the power stone is basically a power-up stone that doesn't need to be activated. It's just... there. To whoop ass. That's basically what it does.
  3. In 2010, Mauer was basically a lock. Anyone who says otherwise is just refusing to acknowledge what it meant to be a catcher with three batting titles, good defense, and an otherworldly OPS (for a catcher).
  4. He already had the power stone at that point, which is the reason I bring up why they didn’t do a very good job of showing just how powerful he is without a stone. When it came around to End Game, audience members may have thought Thanos was just a dude. He’s not. He took on the Avengers and other groups multiple times in the comics before Infinity Gauntlet came around in 1991 or so. He’s super powerful. Again, that’s why he can hold the stones at all.
  5. A good example of how catcher surplus doesn’t exist is the 2010 Twins. They had Mauer, a near lock Cooperstown guy, and Ramos, a damned promising catcher in his own right. Ramos was traded. Fast forward to 2011.
  6. Not exactly fun with numbers but I just realized that Rocco Baldelli is younger than Nelson Cruz.
  7. Without the stones, Thanos could handle Thor without too much difficulty. He can square off against the Hulk and win. One small nit to pick is that the movies didn’t really emphasize how powerful he is without the stones, which is why he can use the stones at all.
  8. I wouldn’t call them a surplus either but partially because I don’t believe a team can have a catching surplus.
  9. Well, they’re the best catching group through the first 35 games of the season.
  10. I agree with all of this. I liked BP a lot but found its 102% rating on Rotten Tomatoes a bit excessive (only slightly exaggerating).
  11. That won't happen. It's still early May. Give it time, they'll come around. It takes time to regain fan confidence, especially in a world where it takes $160 to buy decent tickets for a family of four and you haven't even gotten to the concession stand yet.
  12. You're discussing it because people haven't picked up on the fact that this front office has prioritized player health: fewer BP reps, fewer drills, more mornings off, more days off, more late-inning replacements. It's a good strategy in a game that plays 162 times a year, a game that works within the margins of the worst team winning 40% of its games and the best team winning 60% of its games.
  13. On top of loads of other promising things, perhaps the most promising thing going into mid-May is the fact that Gibson has recovered from his E.coli illness and lowered his ERA from 7.36 on April 16th to 4.19 after tonight.
  14. It's fine not to love anything, really... but saying that film was predictable defies what was actually put on screen. Sure, the ending was predictable, maybe the beginning was predictable... but the entire middle was this unexpected romp through the MCU that no one saw coming. Say you don't like the film. That's cool. I seriously disagree (and you didn't like Black Panther?!?!?!)... but this movie's course was not predictable. It walked a very delicate line of getting to where audiences wanted while feeding into hardcore fans' desires (obnoxiously so with all those references and character callbacks!), yet remaining accessible to those who just wanted a popcorn flick, all the while taking twists and turns no one expected. As a person who has written and sold comic stories for years, I was flabbergasted that the writers pulled off all that they did. It *should* have been an unmanageable task, yet they pulled it off delightfully. Name another movie that worked in 30 characters in a meaningful way and didn't fall on its face by getting caught up in itself.
  15. Yep. I'd probably demote Astudillo (or maybeeeee consider trading Castro) if it was a straight-up "three catcher" situation. The Twins have the luxury of fielding a third catcher that can play four other positions (so now we're at five positions overall) competently. The team isn't losing anything by allowing that roster spot to be sucked up by another "catcher" but they gain a lot by letting their primary catchers take breathers on a regular basis, never mind if one of those catchers get injured... and have any of you "trade Castro" folks actually looked at the minors? Good god, I want nothing to do with the current catcher "depth" in the organization. As for Castro getting in the way, he's gone after this season while both Astudillo and Garver have years of control left. It's such a complete non-issue.
  16. One of the things I love most about Polanco is how stone-cold that dude is at the plate. He's a hitter, for sure. I never expected him to be this good and he continues to impress.
  17. These things lie in the margins, not in any individual decision. Maybe you rest all nine starters an extra 36 innings a season and nothing happens. Maybe you rest them all an extra 36 innings and save two IL stints. And that's what this front office is implementing; a strategy to give players rest when and where they can to hopefully prevent an injury later in the season (or simply keep that player producing at a higher level). In a sport where winning an extra 2% of your games is usually a big deal when the season completes, it fascinates me how little importance people give working within that 2% margin to your advantage as often as you can.
  18. 11 games over .500 was May 31st, 2015. The last time they were 12 games over .500 was October 3rd, 2010.
  19. No, 25 year olds are in better shape today than they ever were... we're just smarter about how to manage the human body. I'd rather see the team put themselves in the position to win more games in August than chase after the most pointless novelty stat in all of sports in early May.
  20. Cleveland, despite already being 4.0 games behind the Twins, is actually worse than their pythag (+3 games) and BaseRuns (+4 games). Depending on your metric of choice, Cleveland should be 6.0 or 7.0 games behind the Twins if all things were equal (the Twins are +1 in both metrics). And that will likely change after tonight, given how the Twins are just pounding the Blue Jays right now.
  21. You're using the argument "once this surprise plot mechanism revealed how it was going to play out during the rest of the movie, I totally saw what was coming next". Uh, man, I hate to break it to you but that was kind of the point of Scott Lang's exposition about where he had been for the past five years.
  22. Never once have I read the phrase "historically mediocre" as being so mediocre that it's historic. The actual word "mediocre" defies a historic nature. Mediocrity is average; average is forgettable. So, in that sense, "historically mediocre" is a pretty good way to describe Perez' career.
  23. Oh, good. Garver got a hit. I was beginning to feel bad for him.
  24. If this team continues to dominate, I'm not trading a single MLB piece for anything. That's what the minor leagues are for. It's time to win. A third catcher will likely be a pretty big deal through August and September, as you work in Astudillo more and give Garver/Castro more rest for the postseason. Never mind that a third catcher becomes moot the moment one of them gets injured, which we already saw happen in the first month of the season.
