  1. It's hard for me to do anything but roll my eyes whenever I see (Cleveland) Steamer projections for individual players.
  2. I'm a bit disappointed that no one has made a joke that the Twins just paid $55m to Johan Santana.
  3. Good god, man. That's an ERA of 7.22 in a season where the median AL ERA was 3.82.
  4. Basically, if Hughes, Nolasco, and Santana are mediocre in the aggregate, the Twins pick up, what, 50-60 runs in differential over 2014? That brings them close to .500 as a team, I think.
  5. Locking this thread. Please continue the conversation in the signing thread: http://twinsdaily.com/topic/16244-article-report-twins-and-ervin-santana-agree-to-four-year-deal/
  6. On a slightly-related note, MLBAM (Advanced Media) is becoming a real powerhouse in digital media and is going to make MLB a ton of money over the coming decade. HBO is using MLBAM streaming tech for their new service that releases early next year. CBS uses it for a variety of things. ESPN uses it a ton. MLBAM's revenue has gone from $300m per year in 2006 to $620m in 2012. I think it's going to keep doubling every few years for the foreseeable future.
  7. Ugh. Don't even get me started on that kind of thinking. I get that response so often to new ideas... My counter is always "We've always done it that way is not a valid reason. Now give me a real reason with evidence." I'm hoping Molitor has enough weight of opinion to convince some of the "less eager" members of the organization to start critiquing why certain things are done and not take it as a given because it has always been done that way. Easily my biggest beef with Gardy. He seemed completely resistant to change.
  8. Parker, you crack me up. That last line is pure gold.
  9. Thorpe is my favorite dark horse in the system right now. It's unfair to call the Twins' approach "slow" with Thorpe. The kid played an entire season of Low A ball as an 18 year old. That was an extremely aggressive move by the Twins. Kohl Stewart has been considered a somewhat brisk mover through the system and he's 13 months older than Lewis Thorpe.
  10. Nah, that was intentional. Hunter has a pretty decent bat and he'll almost certainly be an upgrade over any internal options available at this point. July could be a different story once more options are available from the minors but Hunter should be better than Schafer or Hicks in April/May.
  11. Here you go: 1. Sign someone else 2. Grab a sandwich 3. Do literally anything else that sounds remotely interesting 4. Sign Torii Hunter 5. Do nothing
  12. Yep. If Hunter falls apart - or is just mediocre with the bat - teams aren't going to line up to give him $4m at the deadline.
  13. I think you just summed up the problem with this signing. The easiest way to improve a pitching staff that doesn't involve actually signing better pitchers is to shore up the defense. The Twins just doubled down on an older version of Josh Willingham with a slightly better bat. It's not a terrible deal because it's a one year contract but it is disappointing to see the front office continue to ignore such a large problem.

  15. Sure, I'm all for keeping an open mind to any possibility but realistically, a top of the rotation arm is going to cost one of Meyer, Buxton, Sano, or Berrios. And I'm not willing to pay that price for any pitcher not named Clayton Kershaw.
  16. Or they could have traded Santana or Vargas. It goes both ways. I'm not against trading prospects, I simply don't believe the timing is right. You fill a roster with a few question marks and try to become competitive and then you start considering trades. Give up prospects when you think it gets you to the postseason. Giving up prospects to win 84 games would just piss me off.
  17. I'm not a fan of 72 win teams trading prospects for rental players, period (which is what the Twins would get in trade... Maybe two years of a guy for a prospect). I think that's putting too much stock in the "now" and not enough stock in the "later". I feel even more strongly about it when the Twins have two top 100 prospects, at least one of which will get 2015 MLB innings and the second has a good shot at getting 2015 MLB innings. Add in a fringe prospect like May who already has MLB innings and trading away a guy for an MLB pitcher seems like an even worse idea. The Twins have a lot of open money this offseason. If they feel they need a pitcher that badly, go buy one. Personally, I'd let the kids play and run with the staff as-is and I'd look for OF help with that money.
  18. I don't think the Twins have the best farm system in MLB right now, much less the best ever. With Alex Meyer and Jose Berrios due in Minnesota this year or next, I think trading away a prospect is short-sighted, especially coming off a 72 win season. If nobody breaks out in the rotation and the Twins win 78 games this year based on an offensive surge, then maybe... But right now? It seems like forcing the issue. If you want another pitcher, go buy one.
  19. The idea of a 72 win team giving up valuable prospects for a pitcher makes my stomach turn.
  20. There are plenty of teams that have gone stat-heavy and had mixed results. It's not an automatic path to a championship. There's plenty of room in this game for old-fashioned scouts and baseball people. The two should complement each other, not be at odds.
  21. The Twins haven't gone with every coach I'd pick first but what the hell do I know anyway. I can read a Wiki page and blurbs from each candidate but I don't really know the habits and strengths of any of these guys. With that said, to a man - excepting Guardado, who I know nothing about past his playing days - the Twins have chosen a candidate who was on my radar as a possibility for each position. I'm very satisfied with how the coaching selections have gone down thus far (assuming the Allen report is accurate).
  22. While I know very little about the coaching style of either Willis or Allen, I was leaning toward Allen because he's in the Rays organization and I respect that org from top to bottom. An intriguing choice. Is it the right choice? Time will tell. Or maybe it won't because grading coaches is real hard.
  23. Rios is an interesting candidate but I'm not sure how far he can bounce back in Target Field. He has played the past five seasons in two of the most hitter-friendly stadiums in MLB.
  24. The same applies to Buxton though his circumstances are much different in that he lost a season to injury and hardly played at all.
