  1. There are many relievers who succeed with a good fastball and one mediocre breaking pitch. The bullpen is the place to put guys like that, actually. Starters need to alter their approach - often with different pitch mixes - the second and third time through a lineup. A reliever just has to go out there and throw really hard to three batters. The biggest question surrounding Pelfrey to the pen is whether he can throw hard enough (he'll need to be in the 94-95 range) in short appearances to induce swings and misses, not whether only having a fastball is a detriment.
  2. Out of the Twins' starting pitchers and potential starting pitchers for April of 2015, Gibson is the only guy who is a dedicated ground ball pitcher. Overall the Twins' defense may not be the worst in the league but if you factor in their pitching staff, they're one of the worst defenses where it counts. The impact of infield defense is minimized if the ball is constantly going over the infielders' heads.
  3. I don't understand how anyone wouldn't be intrigued to see Pelfrey throw out of the pen. He's not dissimilar to LaTroy Hawkins. Big, flat fastball that he throws non-stop. He's pretty much a no-brainer for the pen, in my opinion.
  4. No, it doesn't have to be done entirely from the amateur draft and you have a valid point there... but any rebuild is going to center around the amateur draft so if you don't nail that down properly, your success is going to be limited. As for international signings (excluding Cuban signings), I have a hard time complaining about what the Twins have done there. Sure, they haven't gone out and thrown piles of money at one guy but it looks like their strategy is a good one as the Thorpes of the organization come up through the system.
  5. One small issue I have is Aaron saying that the Astros are ahead of the Twins. Well, yeah. I'd hope they were ahead of the Twins (even though it's hard to say they're far ahead of the Twins). The Astros blew up their organization a full year before the Twins started any kind of rebuild, as they entered 2011 already in full rebuild mode and the Twins entered 2011 coming off a playoff berth. They should be ahead of the Twins as prospects drafted in 2010/2011 are now in MLB. Rebuilding takes a long time. Sure, the Twins probably could have done a few things differently here and there but that would have stocked their farm system more and it's doubtful it would have had much of an impact in 2013/2014, though it may have helped them in 2015 and beyond. Did I mention that rebuilding takes a long time? It seems like everyone keeps forgetting that.
  6. Agreed. I think Ryan will bow out gracefully. I have a hard time seeing him get fired... And we all know that he's considering retirement, given that he did it once already.
  7. I'm fine with Ryan, at least for one more year to finish his rebuild. After that, I don't really care. As for coaches, I'd retain Molitor, Brunansky, and Cuellar (with Bobby potentially sliding into the pitching coach position). None of them have been around long enough to get the blame for this losing stretch and Bruno/Cuellar had success in MiLB (and I think Bruno has done fine with MLB hitters). I think Molitor is potentially the next manager so I keep him around. If the team thinks Mienkiewicz is a better fit for the younger players, then it's probably best to move on from Molly as well. Don't care about the rest.
  8. I haven't been a huge Rick Anderson fan for quite some time (or Gardy for that matter). I'm fine with Gardy staying on board for one more season if that's what the front office wants to do... But Anderson needs to go. I've seen enough bad pitching in the past four seasons to last a lifetime.
  9. Oh boy, I disagree. I didn't buy a Twins hat for years because I so hated the M logo. When they started reintroducing the TC logo around 2001 or so, I was soooooo happy.
  10. I don't know what on earth you're talking about.

  12. He didn't say team, he said player. And wins-losses is a terrible statistic to use in player evaluation.
  13. Not a bad idea, particularly if the Twins don't think he can catch (and given how they've worked him, they don't seem to think he can catch). Now that I think about it more, it's not a bad idea either way. Josmil's floor is way higher than Herrmann, as is his ceiling.
  14. In the context of my "80 win team", I meant the previous year. So, the earliest the Twins could be an "80 win team" is October of 2015 - provided they win 80 games - and then make the corresponding moves to contend the following offseason. With that said, if they pick up a free agent or two and the Twins spring into contention next July, then I'm all for trading a piece or two - nothing major - to make a push for the playoffs. But now, after coming off a 71-74 win season? Nah. Too many variables, too many players that will need to step up to fill the 20-win gap to the playoffs as a legitimate contender.
  15. Yep. Sustained success comes through a solid foundation. Signing free agents does not build a solid foundation. Trading prospects for veterans does not build a solid foundation. Both should be used as complementary pieces for an already-solid foundation of young MLB talent from the farm.
  16. I said nothing about acquiring free agents to make the team better, only that it's a mistake to give away internal pieces in the middle of a rebuild process. If the money and need is there, go find a decent free agent. I absolutely believe that's a good idea. I simply don't believe the Twins are currently in the position to trade away farm pieces they might need in 2016 if something goes wrong with their current batch of upper-minors prospects (not to mention that trading a prospect during 2016 might not push them into the 88 win territory but instead the 92 win territory). If the Twins find themselves in contention, a mid-season trade can always happen in June or July.
  17. Now is not the time to trade prospects. It might take Buxton or Sano 1-2 years to get up to speed. One of them might fail. One of them might get injured. You trade prospects when you're an 80 win team pushing for the playoffs, not when you're a 73 win team trying to get its feet back under itself. Any veterans traded for today might be gone and/or ineffective by the time the Twins are ready to compete. It's a mistake to give up prospects you might need later when there are still so many question marks in the near future.
  18. I'd go for two fixes: 1. A stop-gap CF option. Pick up a vet who can hold a bat without embarrassing himself with the expectation that either Hicks or Buxton will later take the job. Do all you can to move Santana to short. 2. A more long-term fix for LF or RF. Maybe not Melky but someone who is competent out there. By mid-season, that could be a pretty good lineup if Sano slides Plouffe into a utility role and platoon and Buxton/Santana slide into CF/SS and Escobar becomes a roving bench guy. At this point, I don't care what happens to the likes of Nunez, Parmelee, and their ilk. They're fine as bench guys until something better comes along.
  19. That's basically an All-Star corner outfielder from a platoon. I like the idea of Arcia getting ABs against lefties but should he fail, this would be a great fall-back option.
  20. Yeah, I'm not the least bit worried about Thorpe. He's holding his own in a league of much older players.
  21. I love these quick breakdowns. Great work.
  22. At some point, Hicks is going to need to get another shot at MLB. Personally, I'd like to see Santana start making the transition back to short as soon as possible because he's not going to stay in center. One or all of Hicks, Rosario, and Buxton are better suited to the position.
  23. As would any other GM, which drops his trade value to the point that it's not worth moving him. If Escobar repeats his 2014 and the Twins cement Santana at short, then maybe it makes sense to move him. Right now, it's taking a pretty big risk to trade the guy and rely solely on Santana going forward.
