Article: What If The Twins Stand Pat?
Brock Beauchamp replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Johan deal wouldn't have been that bad had the Twins done one of two things: 1. Kept Gomez 2. Kept Hardy for both years of control Either would have been an underwhelming, but respectable, return for Johan Santana. I'm not sure the Rockies will be able to match even that kind of return, especially not when they had to take the ass-end of a bad Reyes contract to do it.- 118 replies

Yeah. Sano by himself is worth more than everybody the Rockies got for Tulo.- 118 replies

I mean, he's not a bad piece to have in the system but as the centerpiece for Tulo? WTF? Seriously, I'm still in shock right now. I can't believe that's what it took to get Tulo from the Rockies. I can come up with multiple ways the Twins beat that offer without giving up a single piece from the MLB team or Jose Berrios. It's ****ing insane. Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Oswaldo Arcia. That's a better haul than what they got. Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Max Kepler. That's a much better haul. I just can't even.- 118 replies

Article: Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
Brock Beauchamp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If I was a Rockies fan, I'd be in a blind rage right now. Talk about half-assing the entire situation. I think we look back at this deal in ten years and say "this is why the Rockies were terrible for the past decade". -

Article: Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
Brock Beauchamp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Reyes is owed way too much money. If they get a top 100 prospect, it'll be below 80 on the list. Nobody is going to pay much for Jose Reyes, not after the Jays got Tulo for what they did and set the market price for shortstops. Can you imagine the laughter from the other side of the phone if Bridich asks a GM for a better player than Hoffman in trade for Reyes? Bridich shot himself in the foot by selling Tulo so low. Even if a GM needs a SS, they're not going to give up a 30-40 range prospect after Tulo returned a guy in the 70s. -

Ditto. I think there's a good chance they are forced to either give Reyes away or sit on his contract until the offseason. -

He's somewhat highly thought of but he's closer to Kohl Stewart than Kyle Gibson. Unless the prospect is a blue-chipper, a competent cost-controlled guy like Gibson is more valuable (never mind that Gibson has looked more than competent of late).- 118 replies

Not to mention that Gibson is quite a bit more valuable than what the Rockies got from the Jays. No matter how you view Gibson's past six weeks, he's more valuable than a 80-ish prospect who isn't missing bats in AA.- 118 replies

I agree but I think small moves should be made to shore up the biggest deficiencies. At the very least, you give Gibson, May, Sano, Rosario, Buxton, et al a chance to play meaningful games through the end of the season. That's worth giving up a few 20-ish level prospects by itself. And then there's the increased fan interest side of the equation, which is worth a hell of a lot of money to the Twins. Two months ago, they were trailing 2014 attendance by 4-5,000 per game. They're set to pass average 2014 attendance during this homestand. That's worth millions by itself.- 118 replies

Article: Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
Brock Beauchamp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I remember last week someone implied Jeff Bridich (Rockies GM) is incompetent (was it Jimmer, maybe?). I thought the statement was hyperbolic at the time. After seeing the details of this trade, I'm truly sorry for doubting that statement and I'm disappointed Ryan didn't take this grand opportunity to absolutely fleece the Rockies. I can't believe that was the best option on the table. It reminds me of the time I was watching an auction of George Martin's piano (composer of many Beatles' songs) and it went for something like $45,000 because it appeared no one understood the value of what was on the block. Once I picked my jaw off the floor, my only thought was "sonuvabitch, I wish I had $45,000 because somebody just got hosed". If you can't get at least one top 30-40 prospect for Tulowitzki, you're not very good at your job. -

I agree the Twins shouldn't sell the farm but you don't punt when you hold a playoff position on July 31st, which the Twins probably will.- 118 replies

"Slim to none" is overstating it but I'd wager the Twins' chances in the playoffs are lower than every other team who look like they're going to make the playoffs, NL or AL.- 118 replies

Yeah, this. The bullpen can't wait. If you're going to acquire bullpen pieces, it should have been done a month ago but what's done is done. It needs to be done NOW. I'd gamble on finding a catcher in August over waiting to fix the bullpen.- 118 replies

I'll be mighty disappointed if Ryan refused to offer that kind of value for Tulo. But it's also possible the Pohlads had no interest in adding that salary. -

His bat isn't subpar if he continues playing good centerfield defense. I think that's where we're looking at him differently. Hicks doesn't really need power if he can hit over .260, maintain his very good discipline, and play center. -

Brock Beauchamp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As I said earlier in the year, his new approach warranted optimism. He wasn't getting results but if the contact tool came around, it could radically change him as a player. Do I think Hicks is a .900 OPS player? LOL, no. But right now he's doing all the things well-rounded players do to succeed. Good contact with a reasonable BABIP, great discipline, solid power. Will it continue? I have no idea but he's showing the makings of a sustainable player, though I can't believe he's a .900 OPS guy going forward. -

Brock Beauchamp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It's premature to say Hicks is having a career year. It could be a blip on the radar, it could be a 25 year old player turning the corner. That's why I noted "assuming current production continued through September" in my post. People wrote off Hicks far too early. Yeah, he was terrible. He was also 23-24 years old and badly mismanaged. He's not some 29 year old jouneyman. He's a 25 year old that still has big upside. He may not continue being the hitter he is today but I wouldn't bet against it, either. -

Buxton has to play at some point and he's not going to spend much more time in the minors. Even if he comes up and posts an OPS of .600, he has value because he's an outstanding defender with ridiculous speed. And I really disagree the Twins don't have a lot of OF talent. Buxton Hicks Rosario Kepler Arcia All are in AA or higher and three of them are natural centerfielders. Trading one of them to shore up a weakness at another position is smart management. Is there a chance all of them fail? Sure... but that's a chance you need to take to improve the team as a unit. -

It'd be great to move either Hicks or Rosario but I think their value in trade won't come until the offseason. Rosario is probably worth more right now but Hicks will probably bring more in the offseason (extrapolating current performance through September). Considering the team has Buxton in the wings, it makes sense to move one of those players if someone is interested. -
Article: Twins, Rockies Talk Tulowitzki
Brock Beauchamp replied to Jeremy Nygaard's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Excellent point. That's why I don't get too upset if a specific player is not traded away or acquired. We have no idea if either side has a reasonable valuation of the player(s) in question, good or bad. I tend to work in the aggregate because of that lack of information. The Twins need a shortstop. Maybe they get Tulo, great... but if they don't, I will not consider it a failure because we have no idea if the other side is reasonably valuing Tulowitzki (let's say they set the price at Buxton + Berrios and refuse to move from it). But not getting a shortstop at all is a failure. I like certain players and I'd love for the Twins to get them but without concrete information telling us the details of negotiations, it's intellectually dishonest to get mad at Ryan for refusing to sign off on a bad deal. Shortstop is just an example here. The same argument applies to the bullpen and catcher. It's fine to lose out on signing/acquiring a specific player. It's not okay to ignore the problem entirely. -

4-5 years is a big "hell no". But given the oddities of the past few years in the free agent market, it's hard to say where he'll end up. I could see him taking a 2-3 year contract as easily as I see him going 4-5 years. I'd be willing to gamble on the 2-3 year deal. -

That's exactly why I wouldn't trade him unless the deal was right. There's a better than 50/50 chance his value will go back up and this is his low water mark. -

"Would a package of Arcia, who will be out of options next season but still four years from free agency, and a pitching prospect - like Kohl Stewart - be too much to give up for a couple of rentals?" That's way, way, way too much.
