  1. Eddie Rosario has a 73 OPS+ this season so he wouldn't solve any problems on this team. And there are too many problems right now for any one player to solve unless his name is Mike Trout and is amazing at literally everything.
  2. His wRC+, a good single number representation of offensive output, is 89 (100 is average). Like so many other hitters this season, Astudillo has not been good at the plate.
  3. I think this sorts itself out by midseason. If Garver goes back to mashing LHP, keep on keepin’ on. If Garver continues to post mediocre numbers against LHP, we see Baldelli shift to a more neutral platoon of the two players.
  4. Polanco worries the hell out of me because his LH swing still looks like garbage. He's constantly flailing and off-balance. Kepler, eh... I don't know. Perhaps people have too high of expectations for him. I think he'll hit okay (a mild disappointment there) and play good defense, making him a decent everyday player. I don't see stardom for him, really, unless he can figure out how to fix that absurd BABIP.
  5. I haven't been as worried about Sano as some because: 1. His approach has looked good, he just can't hit the damned ball 2. We've seen this before as Miguel gets ready to start launching moonshots on a regular basis But still, it sure would be nice if he didn't throw away the first 50 PAs of every season/callup. That part is getting a little tiresome.
  6. The moment Dobnak signed that contract, the Twins were able to use him as the “whatever” player because they basically control him until the end of the world. I’m sure he’ll make it into the rotation at some point but in the meantime, he gives the roster some flexibility.
  7. While I tend to give managers a fair amount of slack in bullpen usage - it's a difficult decision on the fly with a lot of variables we don't see as spectators - I have been... not impressed... with Baldelli's usage so far this season, none moreso than yesterday's game.
  8. Yeah, I don't really mind the Ks (well not more than my general annoyance at the overall trend in MLB) but there are times when quality contact is so important and this team doesn't seem to be able to flip that switch. Those Cave and Astudillo PAs were painful to watch.
  9. Yep, this is a glaring flaw with Astudillo, one I hoped he would correct (with the caveat it would probably cause his Ks to rise accordingly). I also believe it was the cause of his precipitous offensive decline as 2019 progressed. Pitchers couldn't stop him from making contact but it appears they can stop him from making good contact.
  10. The Twins don't make it to extra innings without Cave on the basepaths. We all saw how Cruz runs the other day. Those PAs by Astudillo and Cave were awful. They simply need to get the ball out of the infield and Polanco can advance. You know, like the Mariners did...
  11. This team is showing a frightening lack of ability to execute on the basics, such as "hit the ball".
  12. Another fun fact is that the forums will pass 1,000,000 (active) posts in the next 8-10 days.
  13. It's possible but I think your Berrios number is low. And while payroll should definitely jump upward next season, I'm not sure it will rise enough to cover both players. I hope they do it but realistically, I doubt it will happen.
  14. I'm at the point where I hope Garlick is cut because I can't handle you people and your dumb jokes anymore.
  15. I'm all in favor of the Twins spending money but even I have some big reservations about signing Buxton and he's my favorite player on the team right now. It's pretty scary to drop hundreds of millions, almost surely losing Berrios in the process, on a guy who has played zero full seasons of baseball. Being wary of Buxton doesn't necessarily correlate to cheap. If I had even a little more confidence in his ability to stay on the field, I'd be screaming at the Twins to back up the dump truck and bury him in money. But, as it stands, yikes. Committing to that is pretty scary.
  16. 85 Topps Puckett for the baby blues and classic batting stance. Bonus points because I have one signed by Puck.
  17. Sano is a much better player. On offense, Sano has a career wRC+ (probably the best single indicator of offensive output available) of 118. Vargas had a career wRC+ of 100, exactly league average. On defense, it's harder to gauge because Sano has so little time at first base. He was -5 DRS last season and his UZR was pretty equally bad. It was also Miguel's first season at first. FWIW, in a microscopic sample size this season he's zeroed out (average). Vargas was decent at first, posting a +4 DRS in his career. Time will tell how that shakes out but I expect Sano to ultimately grade pretty similarly to Vargas in that regard. For a first baseman, Sano is pretty athletic and mobile enough to do okay over there. As a whole, Vargas posted an fWAR of 0.9 in ~850 PAs while Sano has an fWAR of 8.8 in ~2300 PAs. That's not particularly close; Vargas is marginally above replacement level while Sano is somewhere around average MLB starter in overall value.
  18. Because Sano is a much better player?
  19. Man, I don't get so much of fandom. It's not binary; there is plenty of room on team that exists between "monster hitter/star" and "release/trade him". Sano's career arc has been pretty disappointing but if he lands somewhere in the "slightly above average masher" range while playing a competent first base, there's room on this team for him under the terms of his contract. We all want to see better but if he doesn't deliver, he shouldn't be kicked to the curb for it as long as he's still producing somewhere close to average MLB starter territory.
  20. There’s something approaching a zero percent chance the Twins trade Berrios. They’re not Tampa.
  21. I think that's a really unrealistic expectation, especially in the case of an elite prospect like Royce. The Twins aren't going to ping-pong someone like that around the field defensively when their goal is for him to master a single position (ideally shortstop), nor are they going to risk his struggles to learn new positions impacting his ability to hit MLB pitching. Like Kirilloff, when Lewis arrives in Minnesota, he's going to play one position and he's going to play it every day. The reality of baseball is that when it comes to the 25th or 26th man on the roster - which Astudillo is - if you can find a player that's merely decent to fill that role, you likely have a very good roster.
  22. In all seriousness, if Garlick isn’t starting against lefties, he shouldn’t be on the roster.
