  1. The A's and Orioles. In the National League, I'm fine with either Cincinnati or Washington but I don't care much about either. I like to see teams on the fringe get a little national face time.
  2. Right, which I'm not willing to write him off as just a fluke. His minor league numbers suggest a 700ish OPS is attainable but if it's the way he did it this year that isn't what we want. (4 pretty bad months and 1 ridiculously good month isn't what you want in an everyday starter) The fact that he can play a position defensively is the real boon to this year. It at least allows us to try him out. On the other hand, players who neither walk nor hit for average tend to be very streaky hitters. The downside is that for a good portion of the year, they are average or slightly below average players. The upside is that they can carry the team for a month or more when they get hot. I'm not a fan of players in the mold of Plouffe but given his hot streak this season and the organization's lack of competing players at third base, I think he has a spot on the roster for the foreseeable future.
  3. It's in the team's best interest to lose. I'm not shedding any years over a blown save. I'm actually more upset that Mauer had such a lousy game. The batting race is all but over.
  4. Game 163 counts, Wild Card game does not.
  5. Twins: Ben Revere CF Jamey Carroll 2B Joe Mauer DH Chris Parmelee 1B Trevor Plouffe 3B Matt Carson RF Chris Herrmann LF Drew Butera C Pedro Florimon SS (Esmerling Vasquez P) Blue Jays: Rajai Davis RF Colby Rasmus CF Brett Lawrie 3B Adam Lind 1B Yunel Escobar DH Kelly Johnson 2B Adeiny Hechavarria SS Jeff Mathis C Anthony Gose LF (Aaron Laffey P)
  6. Doumit has posted a 114 OPS+ this season. He's a fine player at almost any position, though his value drops off significantly when he's out from behind the plate. His bat warrants playing nearly every day.
  7. Sounds good. Plouffe over the last five seasons: 2008: 9 HR 2009: 10 HR 2010: 17 HR 2011: 23 HR 2012: 23 HR I believe that's what they call "development." Your supposition that he's more likely to be a 10-15 HR guy isn't really supported by the above numbers. I think there's definitely room to question his ability to hit for average and get on base, but his power is legit, and to me his defense at third base is perfectly adequate. I'm still not convinced he's a 20+ homer guy but I think he'll be a serviceable 3B with solid power upside... Not unlike a Joe Crede type (I think Plouffe's defense will continue to improve). He might turn into that 20+ guy but I wouldn't bank on it, as I think he still needs to prove that he can consistently lay off the breaking ball when it's good and pound it when it's bad. Technically Plouffe already is a 20+ homer guy. Obviously he's a 20 homer guy this season. My point is that I'm not convinced he's a perennial 20 homer guy.
  8. Sounds good. Plouffe over the last five seasons: 2008: 9 HR 2009: 10 HR 2010: 17 HR 2011: 23 HR 2012: 23 HR I believe that's what they call "development." 9. The team will go 5-20 in April and put them out of it before it even starts... again. Put the best team on the field in April and let them play. You will have a hard time convincing me that Hendriks isn't better than Deduno, De Vries, or any of the dumpster diving FA signees the Twins get. I think he is as well... but I also think he needs to prove it next March before he is handed a spot in the rotation.
  10. I think it's a mistake to pencil in Hendriks but he has the advantage going into 2013. My plan would be to sign a B-type FA (Marcum, Sanchez, Jackson, etc.), decline then sign Baker, slot in Diamond, and then try to pick up another Marquis-type and let him compete with Deduno, De Vries, Hendriks, et al for the final two spots. That rotation, while not spectacular, shouldn't embarrass itself and later in the year, you can slot in Gibson as one of those five gets injured and/or fails.
  11. Can someone post lineups?
  12. Can someone post the lineups for me? Still out of town. kthxbye
  13. Sounds like Diamond is pitching a gem.
  14. Yep, Meche is probably the most famous case.
  15. The Twins now have an additional $3m to pursue another middle infielder. A surprising, though certainly welcome, development.
  16. Can someone post lineups when they're available? I'm heading out of town in a few hours.
  17. Or he preferred to go back to Japan (to take a slight paycut) where he could play in the best league/be a star again rather then riding the bus between Rochester and Scranton for another season? I don't give him any credit, he was a terrible ball player for this club and is one of the reasons why this team finished in last place two years in a row. Good riddance. I'm not arguing that he wasn't awful, just saying that it takes some balls to walk away from millions of dollars as a complete and utter failure at your job. Few players will admit that to that, much less leave guaranteed money on the table. After all, Nick Blackburn is still on the roster.
  18. Good show, Tsuyoshi. It takes a fair amount of sack to decline a paycheck you were guaranteed.
  19. Stability>Instability. I'd rather watch a franchise that holds on to its front office and management for a little too long than one that fires guys seemingly at random. Cleveland is not a bad team because Manny Acta was the manager. Cleveland is a bad team because they have bad players.
  20. I have a hard time faulting the Twins too much or giving too much praise to the Mets for Dickey. In everything I've read about the guy, one day things just "clicked". It doesn't appear it was anything done by the Mets or that even Dickey himself knows what happened. Every team had multiple chances at Dickey. Several of them signed him and then let him go. There was no indication that he'd suddenly figure it out or when that would happen. Kudos to Dickey for turning the corner but trying to lay blame on the Twins for letting him go is the worst form of after-the-fact armchair GMing. For those of you who criticize the move, where were you two years ago? Because I didn't hear a peep from the Twins community at large. Nobody cared about Dickey.
  21. It will be hard for me to take any list seriously that leaves Arcia out of the top 100. I think it will end up like this: Top 30: Sano, Buxton. 30-60: Arcia, Hicks. 60-100: Rosario. Fringe candidates: Gibson, Berrios.
  22. Gangnam Style disagrees with this statement.
  23. Posnanski is one of my favorite writers. Great piece.
  24. Exceptions to the Rule for $800, Alex. Who is Adam Dunn? Is there a record for difference in OPS and BA? Dunn has to be in the running. Remarkable, really. Which is why I said "very difficult". It's possible to have an extremely low BA and still be a productive offensive player but it's pretty rare.
  25. Irritated eye. Does anyone know what happened? And more importantly, since when is Deduno's ability to see important to his success on the mound?
