  1. 31 years old versus 25. With Baker, there's little concern for babying his arm and bringing him back slowly. He may be ineffective but he'll probably be ready shortly after the season begins. He's already throwing on flat ground, IIRC.
  2. They probably won't. Ryan got a good deal on Willingham. Why are you so adamant that he won't pay market value for a pitcher as he did for Willingham, Doumit, and Carroll last season? Add $6m over three years to Willingham's deal and you're suddenly in the market for a mid-range pitcher (aka. roughly the money Pavano made last season). Ryan showed that he's willing to go after a guy if he thinks the team will get value from the player. He did it last season and there's no reason to think he won't do it again because he has more money this offseason... well, he should have more, anyway. The only basis you have to assume that Ryan will only pursue $3m pitchers is that he often did so when the Twins' payroll was half what it is today. It's not solid ground on which to stand, as the circumstances are vastly different today than they were in 2004.
  3. Yes, Ryan is cheap. But there is a difference between "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and "cheap". Cheap is fine, scraping the barrel is not. Ryan spent his last term as GM scraping the barrel because he had no other choice. Last season, he picked up several guys who were reasonably priced (not necessarily cheap but not expensive either) and most of them worked out very well for the team. Now that he has more money to spend, why do so many think he'll balk at spending a few dollars to pick up a pitcher that isn't awful? If he was open to signing Willingham last offseason, there is no reason to think he won't do the same for a decent pitcher.
  4. Can we stop using Ryan's track record as an indicator of future moves? The dude had a $40m or lower payroll for many of those years. The early 2000s Metrodome Twins have very, very little to do with the 2013 Target Field Twins. Ryan didn't have much money last season but he used it pretty smartly to pick up several players that helped the team enormously. There is no reason to expect him to do anything different this offseason when he has more money to play with and acquire players that aren't awful.
  5. Throw our own batch of bad arms out there that don't cost us 3-5 million. Hendricks, DeVries, a worthwhile FA, Diamond, Gibson, Deduno, etc. If you're going to willingly put bad pitchers in your rotation, why pay them a lot? And I'm not against that move... If the Twins can pick up two legitimate starters. I'd go for a Sanchez/Jackson/Marcum type for 3 years and then sign Baker (pending physical and rehab status, that is). If you are confident that Baker can perform, snatch him up and fill in two rotation spots with filler until Gibson is ready (which he shouldn't be in April... If you start him out of ST, then you just have to bench him in August anyway... Better to do it the other way around). But if Baker isn't ready or if another team picks him up, you can't expect the Twins to fill in three rotation spots with junk arms. That's a great way to start another season at 10-25 and be out of it by May 15th. In that situation, I'm not against picking up Liriano if he can be had for $3-4m. There simply aren't better options than him out there with the kind of upside he brings to the table. Just 24 months ago, the guy was getting Cy Young votes and it's not as if he suffered a major injury. He still has that kind of talent, though he's unlikely to pitch at quite that high a level again. It's a bad situation to be in but advocating that the Twins throw out Deduno/De Vries/Walters/etc. is writing off the season before it even starts. There is absolutely no way the Twins will compete with three of those guys in the rotation.
  6. If you believe we need four starters from outside the organization than A) we don't have enough money for that and Liriano still sucks and doesn't solve that need. What we don't need is live bodies - we need good arms. Liriano has repeatedly proven he is not that. If he gets signed, I'm guessing it's as a bullpen arm. I'm firmly against the idea of investing money into short-term solutions for next year given the number of problems this team faces. If you're going to sink money into the pitching staff - sink into players that can be here for 3-4 years. I agree that the Twins' first target should be a long-term arm. That doesn't change the fact that they will still need other arms to fill out the rotation. If you're going to spend money on a guy to eat innings, there is no reason to not go with the guy with upside. If you don't think the Twins should sign a Liriano-type to round out the rotation, what do you suggest they do?
  7. The Twins need four starters. Repeat. The Twins need four starters. At least two of those guys are going to have to be signed cheaply. If you need someone on the cheap, would you prefer another Pitcherpotamus, another Marquis, or a guy that has some upside? I'm not a Liriano fan but if you want this team to win in 2013 and can pick up Francisco for $3-4m on a one year deal, you have to make that move. Lots of upside, very little risk.
  8. If you can get him for $4m, you have to do it. Too much upside for that kind of money when the alternative is a Marquis type.
  9. The AFL is all about Kyle Gibson this year... I really hope he pitches well. God knows the Twins need another arm.
  10. It shows how little MLB cares that they don't re-authenticate on a timer. MLBAM is really progressive and I'm sure they'd like to open some of these blackout restrictions but the local cable companies are the ones fighting any kind of lifting of the blackout. I'm giving them money (about one-third of a cable bill for six months of the year, actually). I want to pay to watch games but I don't want a bloated cable bill that I won't use often enough to warrant a $700 yearly bill. And these media companies wonder why piracy is rampant. It probably has something to do with their refusal to cooperate with what the modern market is demanding. The old rules are no longer good enough. It's time for an a la carte model delivered entirely over the Internet.
  11. There is an outside chance to compete next season. It will require a whole lot of luck and a fair bit of smarts to happen. 1. Sign Baker and get a healthy, productive season from him. 2. Sign one of Jackson/Marcum/Sanchez/etc. and get a healthy, productive season from him. 3. Gibson progresses and get a healthy, productive season from him. 4. The offense stays mostly healthy with Morneau and Mauer coming back strong. 5. Willingham doesn't regress too much. 6. The middle infield is not embarrassing. 7. Diamond doesn't regress too much. Quite a tall order.
  12. You've been shown your "hurt" comment is incorrect, so that's not worth arguing. I've been conversing with many on this board back to the days on ESPN, and I'd hardly consider what I do trolling. I also participate in a Mets message board as well, and though they're a rival, I've never once been accused of trolling on their site either. Holding fast to arguments that are continually proven false would be a much closer definition of trolling. Ur trollface.
  13. Heh, I think the chance of me moving back to SoCal sits somewhere between 0 and -1%. Well, LA, anyway. I'd be more open to moving back to SD (that's where I went to high school). As for shirts, I'm a bit of a graphical nazi. If shirts were to be designed, there's about a 99% chance that I'd be the one designing them. Must. Not. Relinquish. Control!
  14. I think there's a small chance of that but it's unlikely. Doumit had a pretty typical season in 2012. Willingham is probably due to regress. Mauer may progress and the same goes for Morneau. Span had a pretty typical year (if he's healthy). Revere has a little room to grow but could also regress (though most know I'm not high on him at all). Parmelee is a wild card, as is Plouffe. The middle infield needs serious help, though Carroll can step in with a meager yet steady performance if everyone falls on their face. On the other hand, Hicks and/or Arcia could be up in June or July if somebody falters. To have a dreadful offense, the Twins would have to add no one this offseason and they'd have to suffer several serious injuries. Always a possibility but I'd consider it unlikely.
  15. You realize that you only need to clear the authentication screen with a proxy, right? After you clear authentication, you can turn off the proxy so that you're running on your own connection. It makes finding a stable and fast proxy unnecessary. You only need to find something that can hold up for ~30 seconds.
  16. That's interesting. I believe it's only for TBS games so they may have posted a general blanket statement to avoid confusion.
  17. You have to be a paying MLB.tv customer, I believe. It's only a few bucks to sign up for the playoffs.
  18. Over the past few days, I've been enjoying the hell out of some playoff baseball. That's pretty normal, except... I don't have cable. In all likelihood, I will never buy cable again. Instead of blacking out US and Canadian residents, MLB and TBS have agreed to allow MLB.tv subscribers to stream games over the Internet (instead of forcing me to just use a proxy out of country, like I normally do to watch games). In a sports world that is blackout-crazy, it's nice to see organizations try to work with modern users instead of fighting them and forcing them to use back alley channels just to watch a damned baseball game. If only more companies would show a little foresight and work with Internet streaming instead of keeping their feet planted in 1992.
  19. In principle I agree. But here's the thing - aren't both bases basically forcing candidates into insane primary positions? We saw a very different Obama last year after his primary too. To me, one reason I am at least entertaining Romney is that I'm seeing the man who actually governed in a manner I can respect re-emerge. If my vote goes to that man, I guess I can forgive the primaries as a means to an end. But I'm very cautious because of what the primaries showed. It's one of the biggest problems with the primary process but Romney is going above and beyond with talking out of both sides of his mouth. I expect to see a little back-tracking and double-speak in an election campaign. What I don't expect to see are direct contradictions from previous stances and lots of 'em... on almost a daily basis. At this point, I have no idea what to expect from the man and that virtually negates any chance he has of getting my vote. All I see is a guy who is pushing another form of trickle-down (really, again?) and being incredibly vague on how he plans to balance the budget when simple math says it's impossible based on the few details he has given us. If he had the courage to stand up and actually lay out a real plan, I'd listen. I may disagree with that plan, but I'd at least listen to it and give it a fair shot. Romney has been far too cryptic for my liking (as was Obama during 2008), which leads me to wonder if he has any conviction at all.
  20. Maybe we should start a Southern California Twins club that goes to a game together when the Twins are in Anaheim? Usually there appear to be at least 1,000 Twins fans at Angels games -- I wonder how many of them have discovered TD. If we could get enough people, maybe we could get a skybox. Or maybe we could sit in regular seats and hand out cards with the url link to TD to other fans we see who are wearing blue and red. That reminds me -- when will we be able to order TD t-shirts? These would be cool to wear to games, and could have the url on the back. I moved out of SoCal four years ago. Nobody is allowed to form a Twins club in LA because if there wasn't one while I lived there, there shouldn't be one now. TD shirts will probably appear at some point but they're not really on anybody's radar right now. We have so much other stuff to deal with that peripheral stuff like shirts will be a long ways off.
  21. I don't think anyone is doing it intentionally, just automatically cap it at 3 levels or whatever. I'd have to go write a plug-in to cap embedded quotes. If there was a setting to do it, I would have done it long ago. Either people can monitor their own posts or we can go back to one quote per post. Those are the options.
  22. That in itself is probably my biggest beef with Romney. Who is this guy? Is he the guy that was a very moderate governor of Massachusetts, is he the vocal mouthpiece we saw for the right during the primaries (and the run up to the primaries), or is he again the moderate he claimed to be during the debate? I don't see how anyone can be comfortable voting for a man that so completely reverses his positions on issues to fit what he believes the voters want to hear on that particular day. Going into the primaries, I was pretty high on Romney (still liked Huntsman better and that is about 1000% more true today, at least that guy has common sense and conviction, plus he's whip-smart) but after seeing Mitt waffle constantly and directly contradict his own opinions from his time as Governor, I no longer have the slightest bit of respect for the man. I've gone from slightly positive to ambivalent to believing he is a deceitful menace in the course of a year. Pretty amazing, actually.
  23. Guys, we've talked about truncating your posts. We don't find it amusing that some of you are intentionally making the forum more difficult to read.
  24. Thanks, Glunn! We enjoy running TD and chatting with (most) of our members, that's for sure. I know most of us haven't been around a lot lately but that's because we're all grinding away at the Handbook. I just finished designing an 8 page teaser that we should have ready to post sometime in the near future. Be sure to check it out!
  25. The Twins can't trade away middle infielders with the potential to be better than replacement level. God knows we only see those guys about once every 15 years.
