  1. Probably not. A million dollars is a lot of money and pitching in NY brings with it an incredible pressure to perform. If I'm 37 years old and trying to win a ring, yeah, that might swing my vote to NY. If I'm 32 and looking at a 3 year deal, I take the money and run. If I'm looking for a one-year "make good" contract that will bring me a multi-year payday the following season, I look at the teams who will guarantee me playing time... Which probably isn't going to be the Yankees.
  2. No, Marcum is not even close to Shields. Between Greinke and Shields, I'd probably prefer Shields because of money and duration of contract. You just can't rely on high-end pitching to perform for 5+ years. A .18 difference in ERA last year is not even close??? Marcum also has better career numbers as I said previously. Talk about WHIP (.001 career difference), and SO/BB all you want. It doesn't matter because Marcum will still give up roughly the same amount of runs. Same for Shields. You can't compare a pitcher from the AL East to a pitcher in the NL Central using straight statistics and expect me to agree with your assessment. Shields' xFIP was nearly 1.00 lower than Marcum's in 2012. Shields also pitched ~80 more innings, if I recall correctly. I'd love to see Marcum on the Twins in 2013. That doesn't mean he's the equal of Shields.

  4. I wouldn't even go that long. I'd offer three years, no more. The dude is going into his age 32 season and couldn't stay healthy in his late 20s. Whoever pays him is probably going to regret it.
  5. Did I read that right? Marcum and Grienke are better than Shields? Well, I'd consider Greinke better than Shields (though not by much and you can make an argument for Shields). Marcum, not so much.
  6. If that's what the Rays are asking, they can keep Shields. He's a good, not great, pitcher who is due to make ~$22m over the next two seasons. It doesn't make sense to pay significant prospects for a guy who isn't priced much below what he'd get on the free agent market.
  7. I believe Obama is a "moderate" because he cannot be anything else right now. He can barely get anything done with a GOP house as a moderate... Anything more than that and he'd accomplish absolutely nothing (and there is plenty of strife within the Democratic ranks, which will not follow an extreme left Obama). As I've mentioned before, I believe the GOP is responsible for most of the partisanship within Congress... But Democrats are guilty of it as well. Obama may look moderate right now but I believe that's because it is forced upon him, not because he's actually a centrist.
  8. Hah, well done. I love it when people pour time into geeky stuff like this. It's always a fun read.
  9. I don't fault them for not going all-in on Santana. He's the type of guy that you pick up if you can get a decent deal on him but if you can't, you pursue some of the more reliable (and longer-term) guys on the market. Remember that acquiring Santana would have done serious damage to the Twins' ability to pursue a Jackson/Sanchez type and signing them to multiple seasons. $13m is a lot of money for a guy who's going to be around for one season on a team that needs four starting pitchers for 2013 and beyond.
  10. This country could use an Ike right now. Too bad that neither party is interested in nominating a moderate who blurs party lines.
  11. How is that any different from a typical day in lower Manhattan?
  12. Ryne Sandberg for a bucket of balls and a futility guy was also a better trade.
  13. Why do you believe those two things are separate?
  14. Shannon Stewart was an impact player. Rick Reed was unspectacular but definitely brought something to the team. Ryan is going to have to give up something to get something but I only chimed into this thread because Levi was worried he was going to overpay for mediocrity. Given Ryan's record, I don't think that should be a real concern.
  15. The Giants hated AJ and Hardy was traded by Smith.
  16. Meh on Amy Pond. She's adorable but pretty worthless as a character. Give me Martha any day. She was a total bad-ass who wore a tight leather jacket like nobody's business.
  17. I want to believe that, but public pressure and budget availability leave me a bit worried. He has a 15 year track record of not making that move. I wouldn't worry about it too much. In fact, JR has proven incredibly adept at giving up absolutely nothing and getting something in return for it. Has any player he traded turned out to be a good acquisition for the receiving team?
  18. Catching up on Boardwalk Empire (pretty good), watching Arrow (surprisingly good) and Revolution (feels a bit like Lost:Redux, not necessarily a bad thing). I'm also part way through Once Upon A Time, which is great take on fantasy (a little too much Disney mixed in for my liking but still fun to watch). I'm also following my old stand-by shows in Parks & Rec, Castle, and a couple others.
  19. Ryne Sandberg and the Philadelphia Phillies disagree.
  20. I assume you mean "Baby Gots Downs". The creation of that forum was one of my more enlightened decisions.
  21. JR has a track record of prizing his prospects to the point of fault. I wouldn't worry too much about him blowing up what is becoming a rather strong farm system for three years of overpriced Mark Buerhle. That's not to say the Twins don't find a way to acquire him but I don't think JR is willing to give away a Hicks/Arcia/Sano to do it.
