  1. The Twins had plenty of guys who succeeded after being picked in later rounds as well... But is that a skill that can be maintained over time? That's far from a given and Tampa certainly hasn't proved that they can do it.
  2. A much better comparison. The Cards are an obvious example of a mid-market team that thrives, despite having less than stellar pick position many years.
  3. It's Chief. After awhile, screaming at kids to get off his lawn becomes old hat and he has to find other interests to pursue. Right, Chief?
  4. Either way, I'm sure someone along the way will explain to young JO that "over the skis" is not an American euphemism for "meet me in the bath house at eight o'clock", which apparently happend to Casilla, warping his mind for all eternity.
  5. You're being sarcastic, right? God, I hope you're being sarcastic. These guys aren't starring in Oscar Wilde productions. They're playing baseball. I'm sure that at some point, they pick up on the "buzzwords" of American baseball.
  6. Irrelevant. The Royals and Pirates are poorly managed franchises. Getting high draft picks does not guarantee success. On the other hand, success with high picks does not guarantee continued success as you transition to lower picks, either.
  7. If anyone would be able to make that distinction, it'd be Molitor. A little concerning but not entirely unexpected given Arcia's stats and his rapid advance through the system at a young age.
  8. I've said this for quite some time. I love the Rays and how they operate but let's face it, they've had a good run that is little better than the Twins from 2001-2006 (and the Twins continued to be good off and on after that point). The Rays had years and years and years of #1, 2, and 3 draft picks to assemble their winning team. That helps any forward-thinking team get back into the playoffs. But now comes the real test. Can they continue to win after picking in the bottom half of the draft, as the Twins did for most of the 2000s?
  9. It's possible but I doubt both May and Meyer will force their way into the rotation in 2014. To boot, there's a good chance that one of Gibson, Hendriks, and Diamond will falter and leave another question mark. I think it's pretty much guaranteed the Twins will need at least one, probably two or more, starters in 2014.
  10. I tend to agree with this. Hicks is not Arcia and just prior to last season, we were still questioning whether he should be a switch-hitter. I love Hicks as a player but he hasn't forced himself onto the Major League roster by any means. He had a good 2012 but in 2011, he was rather mediocre. Some time at AAA to prove he's ready for the show isn't necessarily a bad idea. The same goes for Arcia but I have the feeling Oswaldo is going to be banging on the door sooner rather than later. He hasn't had a bad season yet (a couple of mediocre ones for sure, though) and will force the Twins' hand sometime in 2013, I think. Hopefully they'll both force their way onto the roster sometime mid-season.
  11. I'm of the opinion that if Harden is healthy, you try to keep him for 2014. He seems to be a stand-up guy and the Twins FO loves that kind of player. And the Twins will need more pitchers in 2014. That's a given.
  12. No matter what happens with Carroll, I'm pretty sure the team has an option for 2014. So, no, I hope his option doesn't vest. It means the Twins middle infielders failed, Dozier and/or Plouffe in particular.
  13. Except that no team in their right mind would put that many lefties into the lineup against Duensing. It's not as if the starting pitcher is carried to the mound in a covered litter and unveiled mere moments before the first pitch is thrown. The opposing team knows who they're facing.
  14. They radiocarbon dated Escobar and there's still a fair amount of pitching DNA in there.
  15. Website advertising costs a fraction of its television and radio counterparts. Which has always struck me as incredibly odd, as its efficacy has to be as high (or higher), given its focused nature.

  17. We're never satisfied with Twins Daily and continually strive to bring you the best experience possible. Unfortunately, that means a little down time now and again as we upgrade the software and/or implement new features on the site. This Sunday, TwinsDaily.com will be down 4-6 hours while we transition to a new server, upgrade the software, and put in place a brand-spankin-new design. It's cleaner, easier to use, and should provide a much improved user experience. We're also hoping that the site will be a little speedier with the new server. So, if you check the site on weekends, have no fear if the site is down early in the day. We're just upgrading a bunch of stuff and everything will be back to normal by mid-to-late afternoon.

  19. Deep breaths. It's okay, really.
  20. I don't understand this thinking. Why is morality tied to the number on a paycheck? Just because Gibson makes a lot of money, it's impossible for a multi-billion dollar enterprise to exploit his services? I'm not against the Twins making the most of the rules allowed them by the CBA, I only disagree with how you reached that point.
  21. It depends on the shirt and popularity. We've done two runs of the Lake Show and 2-3 runs of the 1991 shirt. We'll probably be doing another run of 1991 shirts in the coming weeks... We're still talking it over.
  22. Now that Arcia looks to be on the cusp of joining the big league team, Rosario may be taking his spot as my favorite dark horse candidate to shine. It's hard not to be impressed with how he's been playing the past couple of years and this spring only strengthens his stock.
