RED WINGS REPORT
Rochester 1, Louisville 5
The Red Wings were shut down by former teammate Scott Diamond, who dealt 7.2 scoreless innings. Chris Rahl managed to score on a passed ball for Rochester’s lone run in the 9th inning. Rahl led the offense with three hits. Doug Bernier and Deibinson Romero both had two-hit games with a double each.
Many of us hoped today would be Trevor May’s final tuneup before a big league call. On the positive side of things, May was able to get stretched out to 99 pitches. Unfortunately, he wasn’t very efficient and was only able to make it through six innings. He allowed four runs on eight hits and four walks. He struck out only two.
A.J. Achter struck three but allowed a run in two innings.
Rochester made some pre-game moves. Logan Darnell was added from Minnesota. Chris Herrmann was activated from the disabled list. To make room, both Nate Hanson and Reynaldo Rodriguez were transferred to New Britain.
With the loss, the Red Wings drop to 63-53, which is 1.5 games behind Syracuse in the IL North. They also trail the PawSox by a half of a game for the Wild Card.
ROCK CATS REVIEW
New Britain - DAY OFF
The Rock Cats placed Jose Berrios (shoulder) on the 7-day D.L. and Mason Melotakis (elbow, uh oh) on the 60-day D.L.
MIRACLE MATTERS
Fort Myers 12, Lakeland 2
Adam Walker set a Miracle record with his 22nd home run of the season, a first-inning shot that drove in three. He breaks the record previously held by Brock Peterson (2006). Walker didn’t provide all the power though. Travis Harrison (three hits, three RBI, three runs), Jason Kanzler and Tyler Grimes all contributed a long ball. Stuart Turner also had a nice game with three hits.
Aaron Slegers made his high-A debut and it went swimmingly: seven innings, six hits, two runs, one walk, six strikeouts. Brandon Peterson and Alex Muren closed the game out with scoreless frames.
Fort Myers still has a very impressive record (66-46), but needed tonight’s breakout to snap a six-game losing streak and avoid a four-game sweep. Byron Buxton had the day off to rest.
KERNELS NUGGETS
Cedar Rapids 3, Wisconsin 4
The presence of Joe Mauer was simply not enough. The Kernels dropped a close one to the Timber Rattlers, but remain in the playoff driver's seat. (They are a half game up on Wisconsin and two games up on Peoria for the one of the two second-half playoff spots.)
Lewis Thorpe had an interesting start. He struck out six in four innings and only allowed one hit. On the flip side, he allowed two runs (one earned) on three walks. Jared Wilson and Chris Mazza combined to pitch the next four innings, giving up only an unearned run, before giving way to Dallas Gallant who allowed a run and took the loss.
Chad Christensen led the offense with a home run. Alex Swim, Max Murphy and Engelb Vielma each added a single.
E-TOWN E-NOTES
Elizabethton 2, Johnson City 4
The E-Twins lost their second straight and have watched their Appy League West lead shrink to two games. There are only 23 regular season games remaining.
Derrick Penilla made the start and struggled. He allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk. He struck out four. C.K. Irby, who has been underappreciated, struck out three in 1.2 innings. Sam Clay, who really struggled early, has started to calm down. Tonight, he struck out four in two innings.
Dutch Deol and Jorge Fernandez each drove in a run. Trey Vavra doubled. Jeremias Pineda stole his 11th base. Nick Gordon went 0-for-4.
