This is good news,I like Odo. I believe an extension up to 3 years would be better and may still happen. Let's keep the ball rolling Whizkids!

I like that it's only one year. We need arms badly and Odorizzi is a good start. I like him but we need to try to improve the rotation at the top. We need to spend our money and/or tradeable prospects on top of the rotation guys that would precede Odorizzi in the rotation. Same for Berrios. If Berrios is our ace, than we should still be looking for an ace. We were desperate to fill out the rotation this year with only Berrios coming back, so this is great news. But now we need to add to the top of the rotation making everyone better. Cole and Strasburg may prefer other destinations to Minnesota, so then we have to go hard after Wheeler and Ryu, get one of those guys hopefully, or even better both. Hamels doesn't have a QO and wouldn't cost a draft pick. Same for Ryu. Here's a rotation with 3 FAs (4 if Odorizzi included) but only one draft pick lost:Wheeler, Berrios, Odorizzi, Ryu, Hamels. It's going to cost more than $52 million, but Wheeler and Ryu would be on multi year deals and put us in good position when Odorizzi leaves next off season.

If you could get those 2 on a short term contract. Ryu is always injury proned. The Mets traded for a SP at the deadline while trying to trade Wheeler another injury rehabbed pitcher. The Mets always have issues with winning in consecutive years with all of their great pitching since their Seaver and Koosman days. If they were trying to trade Wheeler whole holding out hope of the Wild card it says something.

I miss the days when top pitchers could be signed for a few million a year. It wasn't going to hamstring your organization if the pitcher bombs or is injured.

The secret to the Cardinals this century is managing all of the turnover and injuries and even death of their starting pitching and hopefully the bullpen doesn't blow up. Every couple years the Cards may have only 1 SP who contributed a few years earlier and still make the postseason.

Congrats on Odorizzi. Little pricy but only 1 year.
