Niko Goodrum - 2016

Recommended Posts

Niko Goodrum
DOB: 2-28-92, in Fayetteville, GA
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 198
Position: SS/3B/OF
Bats: Both
Throws: Right

Shane's 2016 Prospect Rank: 30

2016 statistics (Chattanooga):

Disabled List

Goodrum had been underachieving in the Twins system after being drafted in the second round of the 2010 draft. Upon promotion to AA Chattanooga in 2015, however, Goodrum's bat woke up some and his numbers actually improved from A+. The career .694 OPS is still not much to look at, but he does have very good speed and solid plate discipline. This will be a big year for Goodrum to move forward. He spent time in the field split between SS, 3B, and CF in 2015.

Niko is back in action and has played SS, CF, and 3B so far. He is actually in Fort Myers right now, but I would assume he will be at AA within two weeks.

2016 Summary

207 AA plate appearances, .275/.357/.451 (.808), 10 doubles, two triples, six homers, 22 walks, 52 strikeouts, eight steals, and two times caught stealing.

Most of this time was spent at 3B, but there was also solid time spent at SS. He has been OK at SS and CF, makes one think about a possible replacement for Danny Santana.

2017 Outlook

Goodrum now has 445 plate appearances in AA and has posted a .763 OPS there. I really think this is being overlooked because it seems like Goodrum has been a prospect forever. He will be 25 next February and appears to have mastered AA. This is actually fantastic. He is a switch hitter who has good speed. I think he starts in AAA and is a clear replacement for Santana. Failing that he would be another athletic super utility player for 2018.
