ESPN Ranked the best #1 picks ever. Mauer was 4th.

Twins Video

Mauer was the 4th ranked #1 pick in baseball history. Very interseting, you could make the case for guys like Price, but it goes to show you how good he has been, even if he has tailed off.

Puts the complaining in context.

There's really not much competition outside of Druggie Strawberry.

He's a Hall of Fame catcher. The problem moving forward is he's no longer a catcher.

I'm too young to know this.... Tim Belcher. Anything to write home to mom about? Also, Delmon Young ranked #18?? Yikes.

Tim Belcher didn't sign with the Twins in 1982. He went to school and was drafted a year or three later. He went on to a solid, though not spectacular career.

I think #4 is the right ranking here for Mauer. Hard to argue with three Hall of Famers in front of him, but there's no way to put anyone ahead of him.

I agree with the ranking as well.

The guys on the list that have an outside shot at leaping Joe are Price and Justin Upton.

The guys they left off because it is too early would be Harper and Correa.  Harper for example needs to average 3 WAR a season to match Joe's at age 32.  He is at 4.3 thru June 4th this year.

Either way, he is in the 90th percentile.
