The Ghost of Stephen Strasburg

Originally posted at theunplayable.com   So it comes to this for the Washington Nationals. You won 98 games during the regular season, more than any other team, you electrified a fan base that had nothing to cheer for except for the (always bet on Lincoln, by the way). You took over a town that was is, and will always be about football, and who just drafted Robert Griffin III. Now you are one loss from an empty winter, and you are trusting your season to…Ross Detweiler. That’s what you get fo

2013 Blueprint, Part Three: The Players

In Part Two of the 2013 blueprint, I discussed the pitching staff. Now . . . that problem has . . . .clearly been solved. So something much easier is in store. This is the lineup/bench I propose for the 2013 Twins   Span CF Revere LF Mauer C Willingham RF Morneau 1B Plouffe 3B Doumit DH Dozier 2B Florimon   Parmelee Carroll Mastroianni Herrmann     The bench is meant to be a return to the "Thome bench." This means that the Twins would have either a good replacement already up with the team in c

David Schoenfield thoughts on Arcia & Hicks

Was reading the chat today on ESPN and came across this.   Hi David- Because they are rebuilding anyway, do you think the Twins should bring up Arcia and Hicks and let them play? Try to get some pitching for Span. Revere is only a fourth outfielder in my opinion he doesn't walk enough and has "0" power. Thanks!   [h=6]David Schoenfield (1:44 PM) [/h]   I think both could benefit from at least half a season in Triple-A. Saw both play a couple times at New Britain. Hicks still has some swin

Twin of the Future - Joe Benson

This Twin of the Future is also a Twin of the past. Joe Benson was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft. He has tools. He has power, speed, an arm (yeah yeah, he has two, a good arm, smart guy), and he is a good fielder. The one tool he doesn't seem to have is the hit tool. Regardless, he showed enough in the Minors to earn a September call-up in 2011. He and 2006 first round pick Chris Parmelee were given some time that month. They were two completely different prospects. Parmelee

Question....Why all the love for the long ball when you can get RBI's other ways?

My case is Joe Mauer's case. He drove in eighty five runs this year with only 10 home runs.   Was it better for Joe to hit 25 home runs and drive in eighty five?   What makes hitting the long ball better? You accomplish the same objective by singles or doubles.   Joe Mauer hit for power....what a line, only one year in his career....gotta stop this. Ha. So why is he expected to put up power numbers now?

On Writing, Coaching and Paul Molitor

“If I want to write about baseball, what should I do?”   It isn’t uncommon that I’m asked this question by some well-meaning younger person who is trying to find their spot in what feels like a crowded world. Bluntly, but as tenderly as I can, I usually say:   “Write. Preferably, about baseball.”   I’m blunt, because there are so many ways to write about baseball. Start a blog. (If you want an instant Twins audience, you can used the one you have here.) Or write an email to friends. Or use a for

Is the East the toughest division in the AL anymore?

For too long, the East has been known as the power division in the AL. Everyone knows that the Central is a "weak" division, and has really had a hard time in the playoffs. There were usually two playoff teams to come out of the divison (for the last decade, the Yanks and Sox), and they had a good time of it. Going back to 2000, the AL has won the World Series six times. Of those six times, four of them came from the AL East, and they were the Yanks (twice) and the Sox (twice). This string of su

Gleeman and the Geek: Ep 62: Coaching Changes and Seth Stohs

The Minnesota Twins blow up their coaching staff, so Seth Stohs joins Aaron and John to talk about Ron Gardenhire's leash, the TwinsCentric Offseason Handbook, what the shopping plans are for free agent pitching, casting ballots for team MVP, why no one seems to want Paul Molitor, the futures of Trevor Plouffe and Liam Hendriks, how to lessen the upcoming outfield logjam, and why long podcasts are the best podcasts. Chicks Dig The Infield Fly Rule -- Somtimes

Originally posted at k-bro's baseball blog An INFIELD FLY is a fair fly ball (not including a line drive nor an attempted bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort, when first and second, or first, second and third bases are occupied, before two are out. The pitcher, catcher and any outfielder who stations himself in the infield on the play shall be considered infielders for the purpose of this rule. When it seems apparent that a batted ball will be an Infield Fly, the umpi

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

This article originally was posted at Knuckleballsblog.com.   I didn’t rush right out to post reactions to the Twins’ coaching changes as the information came out on Thursday, which is probably a good thing.   StarTribune beat reporter LaVelle E. Neal III was obviously wired in to the situation at Target Field and started the ball rolling by announcing that bullpen coach Rick Stelmaszek had been advised his contract was not being renewed. My immediate reaction, via Twitter, was something t

Boom Goes the Coaching Staff

Originally posted at k-bro's baseball blog   The Twins front office and ownership really hate losing. And who doesn't. So they wasted no time setting into motion a bad day for a bunch of members of the Twins coaching staff (it couldn't have been a ton of fun for the Terry Ryan, Dave St. Peter, and Jim Pohlad either). No one technically got fired; their contracts were not renewed.     Bullpen coach Rick Stelmazsek, third-base coach Steve Liddle, first base coach Jerry White, and head athlet

2012 Season Predictions Revisited

http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php?611-Bold-Twins-Predictions-for-2012   As we know, national pundits rarely go back and critique their own predictions. I wonder if our Twins Daily posters are made of stronger stuff.   I started a thread before the year asking for bold predictions for the year. This seems like a good time to revisit these. I will start with mine:   - Scott Baker will make less than 10 starts for the Twins, but they will pick up his option for 2013. Baker made no starts for

2012 Postseason predictions

Playoff Rundown: Whyeach team can and can’t win it all   Well it’s that time of year again, the greatest of those months, October. With the postseason about to get underway every baseball fan has one question on his or her mind; who will win it all? With that question in mind experts and amateurs alike try to look at the numbers and try to predict who has the best shot. However the same logic and metric we use in a regular season don’t always work the same in October. As we have seen in the p

Handing Out Hardware

This afternoon, we kick off the new playoff format, featuring the 2 Wild Card play in games. But, before we do that. We are going to hand out some hardware for the regular season. We will cover Twins awards and MLB awards.   Twins Awards Twins MVP-Josh Willingham: This came down to Hammer and Mauer. But ultimately, we gave the nod to Willingham. Willingham was signed last offseason over the incumbent OF and team leader, Michael Cuddyer, and he did not disappoint Twins fans in
