Friday Links-N-Thinks

Tragedy struck Boston on Monday with the horrific bombings at the Boston Marathon.   A very visible sporting event was attacked and this story hit home with a lot of us. It can be frightening to think about attacks happening at big events but people are resilient. There were numerous positive stories coming out of the tragedy. A former New England Patriots lineman carried a woman to safety and there were plenty of other stories like this.   Many teams around the world of baseball paid tribute to

Winter Ball

Since the 2010 season when Target Field opened for business, we fans here in the great white north have enjoyed a spate of decent, not ideal, but decent weather for ball games in April. This year, not so much. As I write this on April 18th looking out the front door, 3-4 or 4-5 or 5-6 inches of snow (who cares at this point?) is in the process of piling up here in the midst of Twins Territory. And the team is thankfully out of town until the grounds crew can tidy things up in time for the Ma

Twins Birthdays--April 18

Also posted at wgom.org Bobby Castillo (1955) Jim Eisenreich (1959) Steve Dunn (1970) Brian Buscher (1981)     Right-hander Robert Castillo was with the Twins from 1982-1984. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Castillo was drafted by Kansas City in the sixth round in 1974. He was drafted as an outfielder, spent one undistinguished season in rookie ball, and then converted to pitching, apparently while playing in the Mexican League. He was sold to the Dodgers in June of 1977 and in September he w

Wednesday's Minor League Wrap-Up

The Twins weren't the only team impacted by the weather on Wednesday evening. Minnesota's affiliate's game in Cedar Rapids was also postponed due to inclement weather. The Upper Midwest is still waiting for spring to show up and there will probably be more weather issues before spring is finally sprung.   Three other affiliates took the field for Wednesday action. The Miracle were going for lucky win 13 to start their season. Rochester has been struggling and the call-up of Oswaldo Arcia is goi

Twins Birthdays--April 17

There do not appear to be any players associated with the Minnesota Twins who were born on this day. It is, however, the birthday of Alexander Cartwright (1820).

Arcia's ascension could mean Willingham's exit

With the Twins up and down start to the year, it is hard to know if the team will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. Most likely the team will be selling. There will be plenty of talk about Justin Morneau being dealt in the coming months since his contract is up at the end of the year. Another important name to watch out for in the hot stove reports is Josh Willingham.   Willingham is coming off his best season and there might be more than one team looking to add a powerful corner bat f

Kernels Week 2: Twinbill fever

After having four straight games postponed by weather last week, the Cedar Rapids Kernels found themselves playing a lot of baseball in just a few days' time.   The Kernels played back-to-back doubleheaders in Clinton on Saturday and Sunday. Midwest League rules prohibit a team from playing doubleheaders on three straight days, so they played a single game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Monday night, despite having two games in Wisconsin postponed a week ago. Tuesday night, it was anothe

Game 13 - Automauerton

I'm ashamed to admit I used to complain about Joe Mauer five years ago. I was an impressionable baseball fan, and I think I allowed the tough dudes of sports bitchery to get too far inside my head.   I picture those men, the constant whiners, as if constantly huddled under bleachers and punching each others' arms to emphasize every point.   I think I'm older and wiser now, and I appreciate Joe Mauer a great deal. He's very good in his bad years, and a precision hitting machine when he's at his

Musings about Oswaldo Arcia's debut

Last night (April 15) Oswaldo Arcia made his major league debut. He was called up by Minnesota when Wilkin Ramirez went on the paternity list. With the bat Arcia did better than another Twins outfielder making his debut this month, Aaron Hicks. Arcia singled his first time up and then flied out twice. With the glove, he did worse, dropping a fly ball in his only chance in left field.   I keep the uniform-number list for the Twins and, for now on my website (http://milkeespress.com/twinsnumbers.h

Enough Messing Around, It's Time to Move Mauer to Leadoff

http://www.rantsports.com/mlb/files/2013/04/Mauer1.jpgPeter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports   He has hit third in the batting order and is now being asked to hit in the number two spot. He has a career .323 batting average, a .405 on-base percentage and averages 84 walks and 73 strikeouts a year. If you haven’t figured out by the headline or the description, the player being described is Joe Mauer. For the Minnesota Twins, Mauer stands as their franchise player, their starting catcher, normall

Will There Be A #21 Hanging Next To #42?

Hey all,   I was captivated by the story of Jackie Robinson. His contributions to American society outweigh his accomplishments on the field. But could the same be said for Roberto Clemente and his influence on behalf of Latino ballplayers, and the manner in which he lived and died, off the field? If any jersey number is worthy of the honor bestowed on #42, it is #21. I have studied Clemente's influence over the years, and would recommend the following title to any serious fan of the game, and i

Finding solutions for struggling Aaron Hicks

With the Twins struggling to find offense in the club's games this weekend, there have been a few boo birds roosting in the stands at Target Field. Some of these might be angry fans sitting out at a cold baseball game with nothing better to do. For others, it could be the frustration of the last couple of seasons coming to a head.   Aaron Hicks has found himself in a bit of a rough patch to start his MLB career. According to FanGraphs version of WAR, Hicks has been the worst player in all of bas
