The Astros Playin' (Twins versus Astros - Games 105-107)

Road Goes On Forever (Twins 4 Astros 3– Game 105)   Left a great time at Diversicon, a science fiction and fantasy convention, to find the Twins were still playing. The game was tug of war, and the rag tied onto the rope was still in the middle of the mudpit in the center.   I’d spent the day with my mind wrapped around the business of writing the unreal and then bringing it to life (for more on my life out from under the baseball cap, click here). Listening to good old fashioned baseball soothe

Twins Birthdays--August 4

Also posted at wgom.org   Frank Kostro (1937) Matt Merullo (1965) Eric Milton (1975)     Infielder/outfielder Frank Jerry Kostro played for the Twins from 1964-65 and 1967-1969. He was born in Windber, Pennsylvania, went to high school in Pittsburgh, and signed with Detroit as a free agent in 1956. He was generally a high-average hitter without a lot of power in the minors. He hit .332 at Class D Jamestown in 1956, then settled in as a guy who would hit about .270-.290 at pretty much every le

Twins Birthdays--August 3

Also published at wgom.org     Travis Bowyer (1981)   Right-hander Travis Charlton Bowyer made eight relief appearances for the Twins in 2005. He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, went to high school in Bedford, Virginia, and was drafted by Minnesota in the twentieth round in 1999. He struggled as a starter, but turned things around when he was moved to the bullpen in 2002. He had some outstanding seasons as a reliever in the Twins’ system; the best was the last one, 2005, when he went 4-2, 2.

Twins Minor League Report (8/2): Friday Night Lights

Friday was a busy day in the Twins organization. Aside from the big league club needing 13 innings, there were seven minor league games on the day. Miguel Sano was out of the New Britain lineup again, but a source informed me that he had a tight hamstring. Also, Byron Buxton was out of the Ft. Myers lineup for the fifth straight game. He reportedly lost a toenail and is deemed day-to-day. Kohl Stewart was finally put on the GCL Twins 7-Day Disabled List with his cut foot. His teammate and fellow

"Unrealistic Optimism"

The title of this blog entry was a phrase expressed in talking with a coworker this morning about his recent knee surgery, and what his doctor had told him in regards to the expectations for recovery that he had expressed. The timetable just wasn't nearly as fast as he had thought it would be.   He went on to explain that he probably applies this "unrealistic optimism" to several other elements or moments in his life.   For whatever reason, I immediately correlated this thought/phrase to the Mi

It's not a big deal.   Justin Morneau recently passed Bob Allison for fourth all-time in Twins' career home runs. Of course, he's still behind Allison in franchise history, but whatever. Morneau has 212 home runs and counting. Who will be the next Twins' player to pass Morneau on the all-time home run list?   Brad S., St. Paul, MN   G

Nothing Will Keep Us Together - Twins versus Royals (Games 102-104)

The Way the Ball Bounces (Twins 2 Royals 7 – Game 102)   With the trade talk making the Minnesota Twins look like the garage sale everybody drives past, baseball kept being baseball. The game sounded great in my car, with the window down, and a few hints of fall in the breeze.   Provus described a routine foul ball and it reminded me how elegant but complicated the game is. The ball goes in the air, affected by the way it was thrown, the way it was hit, and the atmospheric conditions with which

Target Field has been kind to Sam Deduno

Entrenched in the middle of another losing season, it can be tough to look at the Twins roster and find some positives. There are going to be disappointments but sometimes there can be good mixed in with all of the bad.   Sam Deduno fits this mold.   He was a surprise for the 2012 Twins team and this still didn't save his spot on the 40-man roster in the offseason. Every MLB team had a chance to claim him and no one took the opportunity to add him to their club. Deduno went back into the Twins

Twins Minor League Start Pitcher of the Month - July

The Trade Deadline has come and passed which means just one thing, it’s time to start announcing our Minnesota Twins Minor League Awards. Today, we’ll start with the Starting Pitchers for the month of July.   This month the numbers of the five players ranked are better than they were in June. Consider, Miracle righty Tyler Duffey went 3-0 with a 3.26 ERA and opponents batted just .202 off of him and he isn’t in the top 5. Matt Tomshaw made two starts and three long-relief appearances totaling 2
