  1. Yet another example of what big revenue will do for a team. The Red Sox can afford to pay Sandoval $ 40 mil to not play for them the next 3 years and not blink. The Twins can't do that with Hughes. They have to try to get some use out of him.
  2. If Texas is willing to trade Hammels when they have nearly the same number of wins as the Twins, that should tell you something.
  3. I agree with h2oface. We don't need to make excuses for Colon. He doesn't have it anymore. If Falvine bring him up after that disaster of an outing, they desrve all the second guessing that has occured on this forum and others.
  4. Well, he did sign RonDL White. And then signed him AGAIN the next year. What's the saying? Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
  5. Wouldn't Sano be the logical replacement at 1b? Of course, that leaves them with no one at 3b. I don't know if he would be up for it, but perhaps Dozier could be extended and slide to 3b. Still leaving Polanco and Gordon for the middle. Or Blankenhorn maybe. Jury still out on his upside. He also might not be ready by 2019.
  6. He lacks range, but he has been pretty good at third IMO. If he played there regularly, I suspect he'd be more than adequate at first.
  7. The way I read it, Santana has to throw 200 innings in 2018 AND 400 in 2017-18. Which would mean that if Santana reaches 220 this year (which he could) he would still need 200 next year, not just 180.
  8. Another item your "opportunities" number doesn't take into account is that Buxton has gotten on base at a slightly better rate vs lhp, which are much harder to steal off of.
  9. Well, he's got to be almost as old as God...
  10. Over the last two seasons Buxton has 26 steals and has been caught 3 times. Not sure anyone can be more efficient than that. He will steal bigger numbers when/if he gets on base with greater regularity.
  11. Adding Gibson to a package doesn't increase it's value.
  12. Meaning what exactly? You have to accept the performance of the players on the roster. Sandy Koufax ain't coming through the clubhouse door.
  13. One can dream. I consider it highly unlikely.
  14. Good article. One mistype: you put that Kepler has struggled against right handers in the big leagues. We knew what you meant though.
  15. I bet he gets a shot at some point. $ 13 mil is an awful lot to pay a mop up reliever for the next two years. The Twins will try him as a starter at some point I think. Possibly to start next season.
  16. Cueto is having an off year. That's 2 of the last 3. He'd have to be nuts to walk away from $ 84 mil guaranteed. Better question: would you really offer him that much at this point in his career? Lynn has a FIP of 5.19. Darvish OK. But the season is far from over. As bad as the Rangers pitching has been for the last twenty years, they would be pretty dumb to let him walk.
  17. Two things about that trade relevant to this discussion. Samardzjia was 29 and Hammel was 31. Ervin is 34. The Cubs didn't get a starting pitcher back. As has been said, any team trading for Santana probably doesn't have MLB pitching (or close to) that they are willing to trade to get him.
  18. I'm curious to know who this "biggish" FA pitcher is. The list of available candidates isn't very long. It's Arrietta - who has not been good this year and a bunch of hopes and dreams IMO.
  19. One could use that exact same argument to decide to KEEP Santana. He can pitch like an ace, he's an upgrade over literally anything the Twins have and he's relatively inexpensive. People keep acting like the Twins are going to get some massive haul for Ervin. I don't see it for many of the reasons that have been mentioned. Look at what the Twins got for the other Santana. He was at the top of his game and in his prime. They got one guy who's done anything and he has been basically a replacement level player for all but two seasons of his 10 year career.
  20. The numbers say Polanco is slightly above average defensively this year. Basically, he makes a typical amount of the plays that should be made.
  21. So, knowing all that, if I am the GM for another team, why am I trading for Santana?
  22. Not that hard. They wanted to let Granite play. And his defense was just fine. Borderline spectacular.
  23. Just to repeat: there was one regular not in the starting lineup: Byron Buxton.
  24. Twins did that. Sort of. They sent Cuddyer down to the minors to let Ford play. Then they moved Cuddyer to the infield for a few seasons. 2003 or 2004 maybe. One of those years.
  25. That's a curious take to say that Gibson lost because Molitor didn't put the best defense behind him. The only regular that didn't start was Buxton. I'm pretty sure Granite made one of the top plays in all of MLB yesterday behind Gibson. So what plays, in your opinion, weren't made that cost the Twins the game? I don't remember any.
