Front Page: Twins Offseason Trade Target: Matt Chapman
Tomj14 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was trying to say it would be bold to say Kirilloff or any other Twins prospects will have a rookie year compared to those three, not how good they could become, and none of those three were as good as Chapman last year overall which I don't believe is really up for debate. Based on fan graphs and Baseball American Chapman was one of the best 8-11 non-pitchers in all of baseball. -

Front Page: Twins Offseason Trade Target: Matt Chapman

The trade is for Matt Chapman the 26 year old 3B from the A's who has had a WAR of 8.2 and 6.7 the last two years and isn't a FA until after 2023 and is one of the best players in the majors? and people are thinking the A's would take a handful of middle tier prospects? Why would the A's want Buxton who is a FA after 2022, trade a better player with more years of control for a less players with less years of control? Usually I try to say what would it take to trade a similiar player on the Twins, but in they case they don't have a player as good as Chapman. So to get Chapman, I believe the trades starts with Kirilloff or Lewis whomever the A's like better and maybe both plus another top tier pitching prospects and probably another really young throw with talent. -
Financial Flexibility is the key for winning teams, having the ability to sign or trade for high price players but choosing not to is more important than not being able to sign or trade for those players because you are hamstrung by payroll. </s>

No directed at you, just happen to quote yours. The twins should have plenty of financial flexibly because that is very important. So if Garver gets hurt you go out and trade for a catcher to fill that role, I mean why else have financial flexibly if you aren't actually going to use it in the off season or in the season?

In 2016 major league baseball had him at 36 overall 2 spots behind Josh Hader.http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2016/ To say he was never much of a prospect or not at the level of Duran might be a bit a misleading. Has Duran made any top 100 lists yet?

Front Page: Every Team Wants Zack Wheeler
Tomj14 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Twins can go on a 3- 4 year run like the Astros, then I don't want to hear about a budget worries, unless is it reaching an excess of 150. -

Garver will be 33 by the time he is a free agent, starting next year he has 3 years of ARB, wouldn't worry about his salary. With the way salaries are going to mid tier offensive players they could be able to afford Sano, Buxton and Berrios even if they sign Wheeler. -
I like it and if the Twins think Gray has a chance to be 80% of what Cole has given Houston, I would be willing to up the prospects, you know make a offer they can't refuse. I usually like to look at a trade the opposite way, would the Twins accept that the trade for a similar player, sadly I don't think we have anybody like to compare with, I would never accept that trade for Berrios but Gray is no Berrios.

The same Jake Cave that has a WAR of (2.3/2.4) for his career 163 games? It is crazy awesome that the Twins are so good they can just cut major league players that are 2 wins above replacement for a season instead of trying to get something for them in return.

So he strikes out more people and is FIP went down by 7%, fWAR tells your story and Baseball reference contradicts your story, if you take the average of them, his best with the Twins is 3.95 and best with Tampa is 3.2, still less than 1 win. Your FB velo should go up when your innings per 9 go down which has happened his last 3 years. Maybe the Twins should get credit for asking him to go all out for 5 to 6 instead of trying to get further in the game thus increasing his fb velo? If you were to say he is trending upward I could go along with that, but 2018 also happened. Again I am glad he will be back in 2020, but if his improvement were anywhere near Cole's he would be getting a way better contract than the one he is going to sign. Hey if the Twins want credit for turning somebody around go get Thor and turn him into Cole and I will bow down them as one of the greatest.

What am I missing that Odo has done with the Twins that declare a new level of performance? His WAR from ESPN has him at 3.6 this year his next highest is 3.5 in Tampa. He highest yearly ERA was last year with the Twins and his lowest was in 2015 with Tampa. While he has never been a huge innings per start guy two of lowest total innings are his two years with the Twins. So higher strike outs is what I see. He best two years with Tampa is combined WAR is 6.5, his two years with the Twins is 5.2? Basically everything I wrote about Odo is the opposite for Cole. His hits down, ERA down, K's WAY up and WAR way up best two years in Pit 7.3, two years in Houston 12.2. There is really no reason to be comparing these two or what the teams that got them did. If you want to compare Cole to somebody maybe it is Texas, with what they did with Minor and Lynn? They both blew up there compared to their career prior.

Comparing Odorizzi to Cole is kind of a kick in the midsection to Cole. Cole is one of the few people on earth that could be considered the best pitcher on the planet, and Odorizzi almost qualified for the ERA title (innings wise) Now this isn't meant to discredit how good Odorizzi is, but lets not get carried away by comparing him to Cole. The question is not can you take a pitcher with amazing talent and harness it, it should be can you find an amazing pitcher that may not be at his best but the other team is looking to get rid of for a slew of prospects. So far the Twins has shown no ability to do that, but I really, really hope that changes.

agreed, two years ago they could have traded Gonzo, Stewart, Jay and Romero and probably have gotten a really good player, instead they have a struggling Romero to show for them. Also I have been preaching the need to trade some of these minors league prospect because the day of wrecking was coming (adding all of them to the 40 man or possibly losing them) With that being said. I would protect Duran (IMO he would/could be the first players selected if he isn't protected. Blankenhorn,Raley and Rijo.

Front Page: Should the Twins Be In on Cole Hamels?
Tomj14 replied to Cooper Carlson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Don't you think the plan is for Thorpe, Graterol, Smeltzer to compete for the 5th and Dobnak for the 4th. That still left leaves spot 1 or 2 open, with a shortage of capable starters filling in when injuries or what not happens. -
IMO, he starts in AA, Then I hope he is awesome and forces his way to AAA pretty quickly, then will play there until a spot opens on the major league squad, if one never opens up he will be called up in September and after that the Twins will decide where the right spot is on the major league roster. If he doesn't force his way to AAA pretty quickly, he probably won't see the majors this year.
-
I don't mean to be argumentative, because I agree this is one way the Twins could go to stay competitive in the American league central and I like the Wheeler sign. But there is zero chance the Twins sign Cole or Strasburg after doing this (not that I believe they could or will with or without doing this), but if you have Berrios, Odo, Wheeler, Pineda, Porcello and Smith plus their game 2 playoff starter from last year (7 starters) they aren't going to add another starter via FA or trade, it would make them look foolish for signing (4 FA starters) and trading (Smith) for another. To be fair this is probably the closest anybody has came to what the Twins actually do. minus the signing Wheeler and trading for Smith, because I think Wheeler will sign elsewhere and I don't think trade with Miami is happening.
-
So do I But if next year goes as well as this year, they still aren't going to trade the top 4 or 5 prospects (nor should they since they are a year closer or will have less value) and overvalue the next 15. I am not sure how you justify making a trade next year or the one(s) after that when you didn't this this? That is really my point, how do you justify ever making a the big trade when they didn't do it this year?
-
Would they be improving? IDK I am fine with Odo (even though I am pretty sure he will take is 18 million this year and be a free agent next, but that is just my opinion) I like Wheeler. I wouldn't sign both Porcello and Pineda, seems redundant, would rather sign one and use the 5th spot like they did this year and why would you do this if you are trading for Smith? The bullpen isn't improved that much with just adding Urena. Not sure how extending Rogers and Buxton help next year. With that being said I really appreciate the time and thought that Jeremy put into this. You said "Secondly, do you have evidence that they did not contact other teams about trading this past July?" I have zero evidence they did or didn't talk to anybody, what evidence I do have is that they traded for Romo and Dyson (which I liked but thought both could have been had a month earlier, sure might have cost a bit more, but they would have had them a month earlier), and they didn't trade for a starter in a season where everything seemed to fall into place but getting a starter for the playoffs. If they didn't do that this year, why would they do it next year, because the window will be more open than it was last year? I wouldn't even know what more could happen next year to make people feel better than this year.
-
So wait for a high priced player to become available where you have to pay him and trade prospects (which in reality seems to be worth more than money right now) to get said player, instead of just paying up front? Very confused by that logic, since this year they didn't do that and the window was WIDE open.
-
Call me disappointed that the Twins kept running out Gibson last year when there were better younger pitchers than him. Besides Berrios, who are these better younger pitchers? Currently they don't have Odo or Pineda on the team. With that being said I am not a big fan of him returning (I could see him going to the Cardinals and being great, similar to what Lohse did), unless they don't go out and get two pitchers plus Odo.
