  1. The draft has nothing to do with it. If he blew out his elbow, the team wouldn’t pay him for a full season because “he pitched very well and was undervalued for years”. Reliable sites put his value at $5.4M. He is very likely to win his arbitration case
  2. Wow!! Very good deal! There’s going to be a hell of a core around for a while
  3. Both are a bit more than I expected by about $2-3M each. Rich Hill's guarantee of $3M isn't a bad gamble though. Still good signings though.
  4. Love the signings. Hill can be a stud. He's out until Mid-Summer but what an impact down the stretch. Plus he will provide much needed mentorship to the pitching core. Homer Bailey also comes with a lot of experience. I'm not expecting much out of him, but a solid guy to plug in the 4th-5th spot as we wait for these rookies to come up. Perfect stop gap with all the pitching prospects we have.
  5. Sounds like the White Sox are on the verge of acquiring Yasiel Puig too
  6. I agree that this would be a good move.
  7. Enlow and then a guy like Tyler Wells would do it. Might be overpaying but I think that’s pretty close
  8. It was a win keeping Javier, Rijo, and Jax. Let’s see if the two young guys can develop and see if Jax can throw some meaningful innings for the Twins this year
  9. You forget it’s giving top prospects the opportunity to perform. Graterol is ready for the rotation. I imagine Balazovic and Duran will be ready mid season. Then there are others who could prove worth an opportunity: Thorpe, Smeltzer, Dobnak, Colina, Sands, Barnes, and Sammons
  10. I think we’re sitting at a good point with our rotation now.
  11. Study the position a bit and trends with players in the history of the game. Then look at his measurables, range, etc.
  12. Here is how I would value these players and trades that I think would be mutually beneficial. Gray - Celestino (or Baddoo), Rooker, Luis Rijo, and perhaps Javier Ray - Nick Gordon, Ben Rortvedt, Lewis Thorpe Castillo - Eddie Rosario, Alex Kirilloff, Nick Gordon, and Blayne Enlow. May even need to throw in another guy like Cole Sands
  13. OP had $5M difference and I have 2. Basically I would overpay for Mad Bum to get less years since he may get 5-6 year offers from other teams as well. Don’t have that luxury with Strasburg. Strasburg will likely command $30M at least but it was too much money for the Twins to commit to and $170M would pretty much be the max offer I could see. I think we can afford to overpay for Bumgarner for the first few years because we have other pitching that can cheaply fill out the rotation. Those costs will raise in subsequent years. You have to consider the entire makeup of the roster and contracts when thinking about it.
  14. I’d pull the trigger on Bumgarner at 4 years $105M or the Strasburg deal I listed, but I doubt Strasburg ever ends up in Minnesota. We got plenty of other pitching to fill out the rotation cheaply
  15. I agree with this. Maybe get him at $170M. I’d consider it.
  16. Don’t care for WAR. Chavez was a better defender with more range and had a better bat/stats. He had a little more range at 3B. Also wasn’t aided by the juiced ball. Eric Chavez was much better and it’s not even close. Matt Chapman will fall off in a couple years defensively and he’s already not a superstar offensively. If you don’t trust your eyes, or even career trends at positions or any other historical data, at least look at the stats and you will see that Eric Chavez was a much better player
  17. And I keep going back to this example. It seems like the guys that just started following baseball this year are all about Chapman, but he isn’t nearly as good defensively or offensively as what Eric Chavez was back in the day. We’re talking about perspective. I would liken him more of a Corey Koskie type value player. Hell I think Koskie would be better than Chapman if he played with these baseballs. Also 3B is not a position players age gracefully. Usually if a 3B is playing defense great late in their career it’s because they came from SS which is a more athletic position
  18. It wasn’t even close offensively and more importantly projecting for the future. Mets would laugh at the A’s if offered Chapman for Alonso. This reminds me of Mientkiewicz blocking Morneau and people saying you couldn’t discount defense. While 3B is mildly more important than 1B, some of the factors are the same. Chapman is limited by some physical characteristics that won’t change over time. With age his range will decline. And unlike 1B it’s not exactly like you are putting scrubs out there as the replacement defense. It’s not nearly as important as say CF defensively, which Buxton impacts more as defensive CF than Chapman does at 3B. For Alonso, it is hard to replicate that type of offense.
  19. I just watched Chapman’s highlights to see if there was something I was missing and I really don’t see what you guys all see. A lot of his homeruns are going to turn into pop outs. Nothing really exciting with the bat. Defense is good but there’s been plenty of good defensive 3B. Range isn’t the best and it’s not going to get any better. I would say that former Athletic 3B, Eric Chavez was quite significantly better than what Chapman is today and based on the type of posts here you would think the opposite. It’s bizarre
  20. Healthier maybe. You can’t promise that going forward. Buxton is elite though in center and his offense showed real promise. His OPS is already pretty close to Chapman. He has far more speed on the base paths and create far more. He is also trending up. Chapman seems like a regression candidate
  21. Agreed. Rendon is a significant upgrade from Chapman.
  22. It's almost like people are trying to destroy the core of the team. Why on earth would you ever consider that type of an offer? Aren't you trying to compete for the playoffs and would be giving away key contributors, all three of which project to be more talented than Chapman? I mean if we offered Buxton for him, I would want their top 2 prospects to even start considering it.
  23. Pete Alonso is easily better than Chapman and its not even close. He had a .941 OPS in his rookie year and simply passed the eye test. Tatis was also better. .969 OPS and high batting average as a 20 year old! I'll give you Robles, but he still projects to be better than Chapman and the nationals would never take that trade. You can't just consider past stats but also you need to look at the scouting report of how they will do going forward. Chapman certainly seems above average but I wouldn't call him a star.
  24. I didn’t say Lewis will have a better bat. Yes Kirilloff and Rooker will both have a better bat than Chapman. He just isn’t that good. I’m not sure why people are putting him on a pedestal. His batting average was below .250. His OPS was above average at best. The homeruns weren’t exactly moonshots. MLB changes the ball again and he will have a few more fly outs. He’s suddenly a .230-.240 hitter and maybe 20 homers. Solid but not great, high .700’s OPS. I would bet money Rooker and Kirilloff have higher OPS than him next season. Lewis is further out but he could get the call if they need him in Center and can play elite CF defense today
  25. Exactly this. You just don’t trade players you will use for the playoff run next year and all of those players are on the table to be key contributor. I mean Kirilloff could have a better bat than Chapman in 2020 let alone the future. Lewis better defense and better potential. Hell even Brent Rooker might have better offensive numbers than Chapman next year. I’d center around Rooker and Enlow and maybe another lower prospect or 2
