  1. At this stage, yes... do you think that Piazza was instantly a top prospect when he was a 62nd round pick? No, but he played great and moved up lists quickly. We've got like 20 innings on all of these college relievers, at low levels, so we know pretty much nothing yet. And, they took the best player available (Buxton), so they couldn't get Gausman or Zimmer. That's a legit arguement regarding Bard. There is probably still some residual resentment from some of us surrounding the guy. He was not a popular draft pick and then pitched below expectaions and was injured in his short professional debut. The small sample size arguement is all the harder for optomists to swallow because it then invalidates the success of the eight or so drafted arms who pitched well above expectations last year.
  2. Those rankings are pretty impressive. There is a lot to be excited about, but I'm a little concerned about talk of the relievers drafted last year but no mention of any transition to the rotaion. Surely, Barrios and Taylor Rogers can't be the only productive arms drafted who get a shot at starting in 2013? If they are, my excitement over last years draft does a complete 180.
  3. Why should the Twins give up any young talent OR pay big $ for a 33 year-old who makes the pretty suspect Twins defense get 80% of his outs? Buerhle and the other low K/9 guys make no sense unless the Twins get back to their old multiple gold glove ways. Radke/Milton/Mays can get the job done when Koske/Guzman/Rivas/Mientkiewicz are standing behind them. The top 5 defensive days for the Twins are long gone. Instead of paying that contract and/or giving up prospects, use the money on the Peavy/Haren/Marcum types. Sub 7.0 K/9 need not apply.
  4. The Twins can't keep relying on pitchers who require the defense to make 80% of the outs. Texas leaguers, seeing-eye singles and infield errors are killing this team. No thank you. Buehrle's a good pitcher but he's not a fit for the Twins. They need to start finding guys who can get outs without relying stellar defense and dumb luck. Buehrle as a #2 or #3 is great, Buehrle as an ace is not and the Twins would view him as such.
  5. Just curious, what is it that causes you to rank Bard third among this year's pitching draft class? There were half a dozen guys who were lights out but he was not one of them.
  6. Enough with the K/9 challenged pitchers please. Pass, pass, pass. This team needs to find pitchers that can hit a catchers glove for strike three.
  7. Thrylos is Greek for Deep Throat if I'm not mistaken.
  8. The best team in baseball changes on a weekly basis. Or are we considering the best team to be the one that ended the season with the most wins? Kind of like how surely everyone considers the best pitcher to be the one with the most wins? If anyone had ever thought the best team in baseball was the one with the most wins, then there would be no need for a post season.
  9. Anyone who can't parley the marketability of Jeff Gray and Esmerling Vasquez into a sellout crowd needs to be canned in my opinion. Get to know 'em!
  10. San Francisco pitchers struck out 1,237 batters this year. The Minnesota pitchers struck out 943. The next lowest total was Cleveland who still had 143 more K's than the Twins. So even when the Twins record an out, the other team's are much more likely to score on sacrifice hits and move runners over and that's beside the fact that even poorly hit balls in play can find a hole, or give the fielders a chance to make an error. With about 300 fewer batters putting the ball in play against the Giants, they are allowing a lot fewer baserunners. The Twins team 5.9 K/9 rate is embarassing, and the front office better recognize this. Any thought of signing a Joe Saunders or Brandon McCarthy for the front of the rotation better be squashed ASAP.
  11. I suppose the bullpen is a concern for a team that really enjoys carrying 13 pitchers. Finding 8 suitable arms for the pen is a lot harder than finding 6 or 7 like most clubs. If only there was a better way to go about this.....
  12. Anyone know what caused the Twins to waive him now? I'm just trying to understand the timing.
  13. Not sure I like Baker being a "high priority." It seems nearly unanimous that everyone wants to bring Baker back, but doesn't labeling him "high priority" indicate the Twins are willing to give more than they should to retain him? I'd hate to see signing Baker at $6 million ending up meaning the Twins then sign Joe Saunders for $8 million instead of Dan Haren for $12 million.
  14. The requirement of 162 innings looks to have spared the Twins from peppering the worst pitching page. A full season from Blackburn likely would have given him the worst ERA, WHIP, ER and HR titles. Hendricks surely could have challenged for most loses.
  15. Add Haren and Peavy and the list looks pretty damn good. Ryan didn't give away a lot, but when asked if he plans on offering multi-year deals to pitchers, he said you can't sign one if you don't. That is somewhat telling and possibly encouraging seeing as he has not used that philosophy in the past. It reminds me of early in the year when he was questioned about drafting control verses power arms in the draft. He (fibbed and) said the team always valued power arms. Previously it was obvious they did not, but after the draft it was obvious they had changed philosophy. I hope his suggestion about multi-year deals for pitchers is another stubborn change.
  16. Ullger's still under contract, the Twins are't exactly the free spending type that fire's a coach and eats his salary.
  17. Didn't even know Steinbach was on the radar. With the success rate of former catchers turning manager, perhaps Gardenhire's fear of Molitor taking his job was not the case as Steinbach would surely loom just as large over Gardy's shoulder. Seems reasonable Steinbach was an impressive interview and was the preferred choice to Glynn and the Twins already knew what they had in Molitor but still liked Steinbach better.
  18. I'm more curious of that .655 and .644 OPS in two of the past 3 seasons. Also I'm not a fan of signing idiot homophobes to this team. The Twins MI OPS'd .590 last year. His DOWN years look pretty damn good imo. Those down years took place hitter happy Toronto, the city where journymen vets go to suddenly become offensive anomolies. Yet Escobar does not thrive for some reason. A reputation for a poor attitude and diminishing offensive ability probably aren't things that will help a losing team turn things around.
  19. The name Anthony Slama was probably already being used by one of their Lucha Libre masked wrestlers.
  20. Another great visual breakdown Parker. Your fact-based mechanical diagnosis is a terrific counterweight to the many opinion based posts on this site.
  21. Ah, my mistake, I thought the reply was aimed at my statement, instead of Terry Ryan's reluctance to be agressive.
  22. and our minor league system is hurting, especially in the pitching department Pretty sure the Twins signed the 2nd best free agent pitcher in 1991, who knows if they would have gone after Clemons, but it wasn't like he was leaving Boston at that time. Not sure who insisted on the 1 year deal for Jack Morris, but seeing as Terry Ryan learned everything he knew from Andy McPhail, it would seem likely the Twins were pleased it wasn't a multi-year contract. $3.7M isn't a lot for a pitcher these days, but it was likely a top 5 salary for a pitcher seeing as Morris was getting paid more than Dave Stewart who signed his deal the year before. Of course Chili Davis' 2 year $2.5M deal was also likely a top 10 free agent deal that off-season. Add Mike Pagliarulo and throw in the trade that brought former Cy Young winner Steve Bedrosian and his $1.3M contract to the Twins and it's hard to argue they weren't pretty agressive heading into that season. That was over 20 years ago. So using the 1991 World Series team as an excuse NOT to go after free agents was acceptable, but using the same example to show they actually won the World Series by being agressive in the offseason was unacceptable?

  24. Perhaps it will sound paranoid, but does anyone else feel a little uncomfortable with Aaron Hicks, one of the top America-born prospects, being in Venezuela? Is the club willing to pay a ransom if he does gets snatched, or do they hire Liam Neeson instead? If Neeson is also too expensive, is Latin American kidnapping extractions part of Joe Vavra's new job title or is that why Bobby Cuellar is now in the mix?
  25. I know it may sound like a stretch, but I don't think Rosario is out of the question come late August/September. Reports say his defense has significantly improved in winterball, and his defense has really been his biggest hold-up. If he gets an early Arcia-like promotion to AA and performs well, a manager/GM who's job may be at risk may look to call up a top prospect if the MLB middle infielders struggle as expected.
