  1. Crash was wrong; that was '80's baseball, this is a new century. The consistant contenders find 4 starters who can manage a K/9 +7.0, just ask the Tigers, Giants, Rays, Rangers, Yankees, Phillies, Braves, White Sox and Nationals. It's simple, if the batter doesn't make contact, you take errors, Texas Leaguers, seeing eye singles, sacrafice hits, Steve Bartman, Milton Bradley throwing the ball into the stands with 2 outs, Jose Canseco trying to catch a popup with his head and seagulls taking a crap on the ball out of the equation and prevent a lot of unneccessary runs. This thread's depressing, can we rename it "State of the Starting Corpse"?
  2. So what if Butera got claimed, about a hundred other no-hit catchers just like him will be looking to sign a minor league deal just to get a spring training invite.
  3. I would have much preferred Villanueva to Correia. Even if they are both destined for the pen, at least Villanueva has proven he is capable. Correia will be useless other than a long man/garbage time guy seeing as his awful K/9 means a club should never bring him in in high leverage situations with runners on as they will almost certainly advance/score.
  4. I'm a total strikeout rube, and he has strikeout material, but you'll notice by his meager 6.5 K/9 last year that he didn't get nearly enough of them. That's because he's so "ineffectively wild" the batters don't have to take the bat off their shoulders. When your control is so bad that every batter can be Mauer-like selective, you have to go back to the drawing board.
  5. Chill guys, he'd only be the second starter the Twins signed who was banished to the bullpen last year. Besides, it's about quantity not quality this year least ye forget.
  6. I would have told them that you did not have a good time because as a true baseball fan, you are more interested in the quality of the players on the field than you were with the quality of the taco-in-a-waffle-cone.
  7. If this goes down, the Twins will have signed two pitchers who were banished to the bullpen last year. I guess it's like Ryan said though, it's about quantity this year, I just wish it was a tiny bit about quality. With no sarcasm intended, hopefully the Twins are able to do something special with three consecutive top five draft picks. The future is bright, it just seems unneccessary to make the present so abysmal in the process.
  8. Right, which part of that is incorrect? Chris Herrmann is far superior of Drew Buetera, it still doesn't mean he's any good.
  9. No one liked the rotation heading into last year, never did I say the 2012 rotation at this point was a quality one. I simply said it was superior to the one we see now.
  10. On paper, last year's rotation at this time was far superior. We didn't know Baker and Pavano would have arm issues and we liked to think that Liriano was going to perform well as he usually did in even numbered years. Last year we were complaining because the Twins wasted money on Jason Marquis as the FIFTH starter. This year we are complaining because the Twins signed Kevin Correia, an equally poor pitcher, to be the THIRD starter. It wasn't until April that it became clear that the rotation was a mess. There is still plenty of time for Worley to go under the knife and for Diamond to drastically regress.
  11. Minor league signings don't bother me. Teams need to try to keep their AAA clubs happy and competitve too.
  12. That probably depends on who's doing the appreciating. I doubt you're writing his checks. Just because your boss tells you that you are a hard worker don't expect when you come home your wife will tell you the same thing.
  13. And a Potsie if you think the poster is a complete idiot.
  14. It's naver too early to DFA Correia to make room on the roster. Edit: I guess that line's going to get played a lot.
  15. If the goal is to get the team K/9 under 5.0, getting Buehrle might be vital. Not a goal I'm fond of, but seems to be the current effort of the front office.
  16. I find it more likely Hendriks is a useful pitcher in 2013 than I do Correia or Pelfry. Though his intro into the AL was rough last year, his limited experience is still more than those two combined, and while he will not be a big strikeout pitcher, he will still miss a hell of a lot more bats than those two.
  17. Nice breakdown but saying "flexible payroll" is a bit optimistic for this organization. The free agent starters are going to be looking bleak mext year. Josh Johnson and Adam Wainwright are on clubs who will be looking to extend them. Lincecum will either pitch poorly again and be too big of a risk for a guy like Ryan to take a chance, or rebound and price himself out of the Twins plans. Garza didn't leave here with a great taste in his mouth and guys like Holliday, Carpenter and Dickey will nearly be 40. Of course, 1/3 to 1/2 of the targetable arms will resign with their clubs before the Twins have a chance to bid. The Twins may have a low payroll heading into next years off season, but I wouldn't count on it increasing anywhere close to previous highs.
  18. I'd guess there were plenty of games in the mid to late 1990's with Rich Backer and Marty Cordova when Matt Lawton wasn't playing. They often called up Chris Latham to play RF.
  19. Well he was unobtainable for Justin Upton and the Twins don't have A comparable trade chip.
  20. I like the hearts. If I remember my '80's video game rules correctly, if I collect enough I'll get an extra life.
  21. Sounds about right, there aren't many options left if the Twins are hoping to make a rotation with an average K/9 below 5.0.
  22. The contract is worse, the pitcher isn't. They are both groundball-inducing, strikeout-allergic swingmen.
  23. I would have preferred Lannen because he is younger and cheaper than Correia. Otherwise it is a wash seeing as they are pitching clones.
  24. The Twins too had an aging owner whose time was running out. He didn't go all in to win, instead he just made threats to get a new stadium. A new stadium that he had to chip in less money for, than did the Tigers owner for his stadium built eight years earlier, whan stadiums were built for much less.
