  1. If the Twins have one of only a few GM's who couldn't either reasonably predict the free agent market or adapt to it on the fly, they need to get a new one. Ryan's done a lot of good for this orgainzation, but I don't think he's an elite GM any longer. It's probably not true, but I half fear that Ryan actually believes that Correia and Pelfrey are on par with the other mid-tier pitchers and he got a bargain signing them. That lack of judgment would actually be more concerning than his inactivity.
  2. There were nearly 2 dozen starting pitchers better than Kevin Correia and Mike Pelfrey the Twins could have made offers to.
  3. Exactly. Because even if the Twins made better offers to free agents but were spurned (however unlikely) it's on Ryan and the front office to find out why and remedy the issues these free agents have with the organization.
  4. Nice rationalization of how guys who get to the 50-60% range start gaining momentum. The steriod guys are trending away from that magic range though, not towards it.
  5. The Twins aren't moving him from 3B anytime soon. Anyone who truely thinks the Twins are still sticklers about defense, remember we are about to head into year two with Trevor Plouffe manning the hot corner. Sano's defense needs work, but it can't be that far behind Plouffe's current level. As to his trajectory compared to Mauer, it seems unlikely to me but not as impossible as some think. Sure Mauer had more mature numbers in aspects of plate discipline, but these are two completely different players. Offensively, the team is evaluating Sano on a much different skill set than Mauer. It's not like the Twins are going to wait on Sano to have league average strikeout numbers, if they did, he'd likely never come up.
  6. So because a cheater has already been admitted, we should open the door to all of them? That's a pretty thin arguement. I could care less if Perry got kicked out of the Hall, but his spitball rates at about a 1 on baseballs scandal meter. The steriod cheats made the embarasment of the 1994 strike look like a funny little sidenote in the games history. These guys did significant damage to the game. They knew there would be consequeces if they got caught.
  7. So what your saying is it is unrealistic to expect a 25 man roster made up of 20 pre-arbitration eligible players to win the World Series? Blasphamous.
  8. The thread title was really asking for it. I'm sure plenty of other people opened the thread only to be disappointed that the punchline had been used.
  9. The Indians somehow just traded Jeanmar Gomez. Under the right circumstances, the Twins could get something for Swarzak, he can't be any less desirable than Gomez.
  10. It was a mistake, but it's not as though free agency takes place over the course of 24 hours. It was a miscalculation on the Twins part and they failed to adapt to it even though the Cubs gave every team a huge heads up that free agency was going to head this way when they "overpaid" for Baker and Feldmen. So in the sense that free agent after free agent passed with Ryan expecting them to sign for less money or less years, yes it is a repeated mistake. He's had two months to adjust to original mistake.
  11. You can't seriously think them not getting in has anything to do with being an a hole? It's about being a cheat and f ing with with the record books that baseball lovers have quoted and respected forever. This isn't a court of law, what does innocent until proven guilty have to do with anything? This is the Hall of Fame, no one's on trial. Also during any PED trials, no one was proven "innocent", in fact that is not an option in our court system. Besides voters aren't holding back guys who were assumed to have taken amphetemines, it's only the guys who to most eyes clearly used steroids or HGH. These guys couldn't be stupid enough to have taken them and not realized that if they got publicly busted there would be no consequence. Certainly it crossed all of thier minds that getting caught may mean missing out on the Hall yet they took them anyway. They will never get in unless decades from now perception has changed enough for the Hall to call a special session to vote in these guys. All it takes is one in four voters to say no, and there will always be at least a quarter of the voters who won't budge on the issue. As to Biggio, only 44 players have made it on their first ballot. This isn't a travesty, he's certainly not the 45th greatest ball player ever. If DiMaggio and Killebrew didn't get in on their first try, I'm not going to sweat Biggio.
  12. Some of the steroid apologists often seem pretty indignant and upset that their guys are not getting the votes. I wonder if there are any pro-steroid era voters who are withholding votes for the assumed clean players simply because if they can't get their guys in, (Bonds, Clemons, etc.) they refuse to help get anyone in. I don't have a huge issue with the results. I'd like Morris, Murphy and Raines to get in, but they are much more borderline than someone like Blyleven or Dawson who just barely made it. I'm sure Biggio will get in too, but being a 1st vote entrant is a pretty big honor, I don't know that he deserves that title. Some voters are probably thinking he needs to wait a year, just as they did with Roberto Alomar. Though I don't know that Biggio is totally in the clear of the steroid stain. Fair or not, people are going to remember that he did play for the Astros, a team with a bad PED rep, just ask his long-time teammates, Jeff Bagwell and Ken Caminiti. Oh wait....
  13. No clue what the Blue Jays OF plans are yet (they may not either) but they have 6 players on their 40-man that can play CF. If Rajai Davis is the odd man out, I wonder if the Twins would be able to get him on the cheap. He'd be just fine as a stop gap solution for CF/leadoff and a great bench option once Hicks is ready full-time.
  14. From the Makey initerview: "I think we've fortified the pitching staff," Ryan said. "You look at this team and I think we scored enough runs. We have enough defense, even with the loss of Revere and Span. So we're getting somewhat close to the point where we're ready to go and sort this out a little bit (at spring training)." Perhaps it was a typo? Did Makey mean to type "forfeited the pitching staff." Also, in what possible way does Ryan think the Twins have enough defense. This is likely a bottom five defense which doesn't go well with the intentionally constructed extreme pitch-to-contact staff.
  15. He runs acquistions through Goin's department (he and the intern I guess) but I don't think this team truely is embracing any advanced metrics if they don't initiate a large amount of their acquisitons based on this data.
  16. I just don't understand why rebuilding requires this drastic of a payroll cut. If your concerned about signing vets that would take away playing time from young guys, they why bother signing guys like Correia? If the team admits signing Correia is a stop-gap move to keep the seat warm for the youngsters, then why not sign a better pitcher to a two year deal?
  17. Burnett is going to be wasting a spot for sure. Hopefully he doesn't have a long leash. Sometimes Ryan, Gardy and co. are too deep into the forest to see the trees, but surely even they know Burnett survived last year on black magic alone. Hopefully Ryan doesn't need his single SABR employee and his trusty intern to convince him.
  18. Adam LaRoche finally signed meaning there really aren't any appealing 1B free agents remaining. I would think if the Twins were planning on moving Morneau this off season, now would be the time. The hitch is that LaRoche re-upped with the Nationals meaning now they'll try to move Michael Morse who is cheaper, also on a rental contract and has positional flexibility. If you were to assume Morse is a more attractive player, to move Morneau the Twins may now actually need to eat salary AND take a lesser return, well a lesser return that what the Nationals are asking for Morse anyway. I think with Morse looking like a better option for most clubs, this may indicate Morneau will be a Twin at least going into the season.
  19. Ok forget about the throwaway IBB statement and focus on the first part of the post. (Re)read Parker's article: Joe Mauer pulled through in 2012 - Blogs - Minnesota Twins News & Rumors Forum or check his career splits http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?id=mauerjo01&year=Career&t=b Mauer hits well under any scenario, but in every possible way runners can occupy bases, he hits much, much better compared to when the bases are empty. Unless we are expecting whoever is now going to be atop the lineup to occupy the bases as well as Span and Revere did last year Mauer's numbers are bound to decrease.
  20. Mauer will be statistically worse this year simply because the Twins lost their best two options to hit in front of him in the lineup. Parker had a terrific breakdown of how well Mauer utilized the positioning of the infielders when a runner was on base, those oppotunities will likely be decreased without Span and Revere batting in front of him. His OBP/OPS likely would also take a hit as he had a high percentage of intentional walks last year with Span standing on 2B, those will likely decrease considering the internal options for the top of the order likely will not reach 2B as often.
  21. Well here's hoping; but he better find a way to lower that contact rate or my money is on one-hit-wonder.
  22. Neither interest me unless were talking about managerial candidates once Gardenhire gets fired for losing with the pre-Kelly Leake Bad News Bears. Than I'd give Inge an interview.
  23. Wow, up to four pages in a Jason Frasor thread? Can't wait to see the double digit beauty that will pop up once Marcum signs with another club. Seems like every thread is turning into a "the Twins are cheating the fans, d bag!" vs "they don't have to justify their payroll to you, a hole!" Battle Royale. Looks like at this point, as much effort is being put into discrediting one's opponent than into making one's point. I thought election season was over. In full disclosure, I've taken my fair share of jabs at front office defenders. This is starting to look petty though, sorry for my behavior. I hope others too see how unconstructive this is getting.
  24. No it won't. Next year the Twins will likely have 20 players at arbitration or pre arbitration levels. The Twins won't have payroll concerns until guys like Meyers, Hicks and Sano get deep into arbitration, and that's only if the team gets lucky and hits on multiple prospects. They haven't even played an MLB game yet. The team is keeping payroll down now to set an artificially low baseline for the next half decade or so.
  25. It's more than an assumption when the probability is extremely high. It's rediculous to think the Twins are the only team out of 30 that can keep rumors from spreading. Agents purposefully leak this kind of information to stir up competition. We did after all hear rumors linking the Twins to bottom tier pitchers, why would those be the only ones leaked? As to the fair-weather fans, they too will be factored into any discussions when it comes to negotiating television contracts. You'd think a wise organization would attempt to keep their interest. There is no rule that says you can't maintain a reasonable payroll AND rebuild at the same time.
