  1. It's a long season, the indignity of not making the opening day 25-man roster is quickly forgotten after a mid-season call-up. The pesky issue of not being on the 40-man can be resolved when someone suffers a lengthy injury or is terrible enough to be DFA'd. Barring his own injury or AAA ineffectiveness, Slama will surely get his shot sometime this year, I'm not sweating it. Though I've wanted to see Slama get his shot too, since he's not on the the 40-man, I actually would be annoyed if the team lost someone like Fien or Pressly because they wanted to atone for the past snubs and give Slama the spot. He certainly deserves his shot, but I don't want it to come at the expense of another pitcher with a glimmer of potential.
  2. While it would be fun to get Thome back, if the Twins truely are looking for a bat like this off the bench, I suspect they'd give a longer look at the younger, right-handed Chris Colabello instead.
  3. 9 innings and over 100 pitches in his second start of the season huh? College coaches, I tell ya.
  4. Duensing actually pitched an inning in game 162 and then got the starting nod in game 1 of the ALDS. But yeah, surprising how few guys are left. I was at game 162 and they seemed to try to drag every Twins who played in the Metrodome out on the field and remember thinking it was kind of a shame that the local kid Perkins was the only no show from the current team (the AAA season was over by then) and it was because he and the team were actively trying to cut each others throats. Amazing fences were mended after that dust-up.
  5. I don't feel bad for the owners either, I could care less if they make a dime, but the fact is they will and they aren't going to let signing baseball players cut into their profit margins. Can the owners afford these huge contracts that have come about the last 15 years because of agents like Scott Boras (mostly Scott Boras)? Of course but they're just passing the buck and marking up ticket/concession/memerobelia prices and rates they charge advertisers and broadcasting companies. The broadcasting companies of course won't take the hit so they pass the buck to the consumer too. Boras isn't bad for the owners because at the end of the day everyone just passes the check to the low man on the totem poll; us. Boras is bad for baseball.
  6. Shame on Pittsburgh for not acquiesing to the almighty Scott Boras. Boras obviously did talk to some teams about what kind of salary he wanted, that's why everyone knew Appel was going to try to eat up nearly all of a teams draft allowence. Pittsburgh took a chance that Appel would tell his agent to go die and accept the best offer they could make instead of going back to school and risk it. Pittsburgh knew what Boras was asking for, they thought they'd take a gamble, it didn't work. Boras is bad for baseball, advising young men like Appel to make obscene demands and then if they don't get it, go back to school or play independant ball. It's a huge risk for the player but hardly any sweat for Boras. Betting $6 million dollars is nothing for a filthy rich dirtball like Boras, but he's talked a guy who has nothing into taking the gamble.
  7. It's not a crap shoot, every one of those teams save perhaps the 2011 Cardinals had a better top of the rotaion than any the Twins sent to the playoffs. You need great pitching, particularly guys with dominating stuff. Only the 2011 Cardinals and 2005 White Sox had staffs that weren't full of strikeout artists.
  8. Good, let's see him go to Ft. Myers then. I wonder exactly just how impressive a HS pitcher would have to be to skip the Midwest league for the Twins.
  9. If we're going that route, I vote to bring back Jim Thome to play 2B.
  10. The over/under on that group of pitchers making the 25 man roster is 2.
  11. Correia is getting the first Grapefruit League start. I wonder if this is an early indication of where they are leaning come opening day.
  12. It was September of 2010, his third year with the Mets and second year under his new deal. It would have been the time that a six year deal with the Twins would have expired had Ryan thought to extend him for a more reasonable length after the 2004 season. It would have been a logical extension length that would have worked out nearly perfectly.
  13. I heard that Naulty guy added quite a few MPH to his heater, I'm getting excited.
  14. No like sitting on Hunter when he knew he needed to be traded and sitting on Santana when he knew he needed to be extended and sitting on his hands for the first two months of free agency every year to see how everything shapes out instead of being the guy who goes out and does the shaping. He's indecisive and conservative, that's not what we should be looking for if we want a winning team. Hopefully he's over his Charlie Brown phase.
  15. I don't accuse Ryan of mistreating the farm to the extent that Mike does, in fact I'll split the credit of the current state of the farm 50/50 between Smith and Ryan, but in his first stint as GM, Ryan almost always shied away from upside arms in favor of safe college pitchers. That did hurt the farm and it's the reason this team has only had two pitchers with anything resembling top of the rotation material this century, and both of those guys were acquired in trades.
  16. What does his contract with the Mets have to do with it? His previous contract wasn't anything close to the price he required after the 2004 season when he was still working on his first arbitration year and had yet to win his 2nd Cy Young. Ryan bought out three arbitration years and got only one free agency year, he should have extended him six years as I'm sure most other GM's would have.
  17. Ryan's actually starting to resemble Charlie Brown. Appearnces aside, Lucy would call them both wishy-washy. Ryan was just too indecisive about these matters, it often seemed he waited for a situation to present itself because he didn't want to be agressive and make a mistake. Usually he waited too long and the window closed.
  18. Of course the Twins only had him until 2008 because Ryan might be the only GM that wouldn't love to lock up a 26-year-old left handed Cy Young award winner for more than 4 additional years at a reasonable price.
  19. From my short recollection, Gardy usually loses these battles though. Off the top of my head, if he had his way, Dozier would have made the opening day roster last year, Revere would have been called up long before September 2010 and Young would have been traded in just about every off season after the Twins acquired him. To be fair though, we probably don't hear much when Gardy actually does get his way.
  20. I agree, but that's because Ryan already set the peramaters of the choices when he traded away two centerfielders, at least one of which Gardenhire would have surely kept if he had his druthers. With Gardy's frustration over the defensive problems last year, I'd suspect if the decision was his, the Twins would have 1 or 2 more new infielders this season to chose from. But from the current set of players, yes, there probably won't be much diversion, there's really not too many options at this point of the game.
  21. Looks like he lost some weight. Should be expected after losing your spleen though.
  22. What decisions is he talking about? If Gardenhire got to make the decisions the 25 man roster would probably look a lot different than the one Ryan will put together.
  23. The Phillies are loaded with vets with strong BB rates/OBP. Playing with guys like Chase Utley, Michael Young, Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard, he may learn more patience. It probably would have happend had he remained in Minnesota hitting between Span and Mauer too.
  24. A very similar situation occued for this team just over 20 years ago. Kent Hrbek was the beloved Twins 1B but they had promising prospect Paul Sorrento lurking. Hrbek was also 31 and Sorrento was putting up some exciting power numbers in the minors. The Twins chose to move Sorrento instead of Hrbek. It didn't work out well for the Twins as Hrbek had difficulties staying healthy and retired early but that was largely due to his poor conditioning. (I forget, did you write that great article a month or so back about Hrbek Cody?) If Morneau looks healthy and productive perhaps history repeats itself; the Twins haven't been shy about trading last decades 1st round picks this off season. I haven't heard the Hrbek/Sorrento parallel drawn yet but I'm sure it will come up often as the trade deadline approaches.
  25. How is this going to play out though if this is another disaster season? Gardenhire's contract is up after 2013, are they really going to give him a two or three year deal after three consecutive 90 loss seasons? I don't know that they'd want to make that kind of statement to the fans. The other option is continually giving him one year deals, but that is a rarity in the MLB, neither the manager or the team would want a lame duck status rolling over annually for their manager.
