  1. I agree with SD. I don't give Ryan a pass on much, but I'm laying all that mess at the feet of Anthony. Ryan didn't even manage to find a way for Jacque Jones to make a late season cameo when the team brought him back in a token gesture. Placing Kubel, Bartlett and Guerrier on the 25-man stunk much more like moves Gardenhire wanted than Ryan. As Anthony is a numbers guy, not a baseball guy, I strongly believed at the time Gardy had much more influence on roster decisions than he normally did under Ryan.
  2. I heard he had a limited no trade clause in so far as his b#$!*ing and moaning would be less limited to teams depending on the media exposure they have available to him.
  3. Eh, so what. Anyone that signs Pena will surely only do so to a minor league deal. The Twins were rumored to be interested in doing the same thing to Casey Mcgehee last year and probably realized they were on the right track when he turned out to be a servicable player. Last year I was just fine with the Kubel, Bartlett and Guerrier signings, they were all worth a no risk flier. Clearly the flaw was simply not making them earn their spots on the MLB level. I give Ryan a lot of flack, but he wasn't the one making the decisions to give those three 25-man spots, that was Rob Anthony. I don't think Pena, or any other minor league signing is going to be given a free pass onto the MLB roster this year, at least not after last season's fiasco.
  4. Pretty cheap. Twins may have just thrown out a low ball offer never thinking it would win. Anyway, if the KBO ERA is a concern, it was still lower than Albers, so he must be better than the Canadian! Cheaper too, at least the posting fee portion.
  5. It could mean small ball parks or small strike zone. Or maybe that's where all the old aluminum bats from the NCAA went after they became illegal.
  6. I don't want Hunter, but I still don't get the love for Rasmus, I wouldn't want to give him more than one year either. He has way too many on base issues for me to want him as more than a 4th OFor platoon player. This team may have worse 4th OF/platoon options now, but I wouldn't compound the problem overpaying in years for only a slightly less frustrating player.
  7. I want this team to get younger, not older. Still, Hunter doesn't bother me that much. His defense hasn't been good, but he's still a good athlete. I'd guess his defensive ratings are mostly due to a decreased range. That would be a much bigger issue at the quite large Comerica RF; not so much at TF. Arcia hasn't played well because he takes bad angles and doesn't play the ball well off the wall. Those probably aren't things that would be as concerning with a veteran like Hunter. You don't have to run much when your stadium's RF is the size of an elevator.
  8. The troubling thing is that this seems to be the theme with nearly every prospect the Twins have called up in the last year, and will be the same for almost all of them called up in the near future.
  9. Well I think the desire for fresh blood has less to do with whether the Twins have already indocterined the candidate into their preexisting theories, but more to do with the idea that it would be nice if they hired somebody they didn't already know intimately; someone not already in the clique. It's more like asking them to go chat up the girl across the cafeteria you've never had the stones to talk to before instead of hanging with the same cycle of guys they've been eating with since the 3rd grade.
  10. It should have been the strategy in 2011-13. Pelfrey and Harden were both good lotto tickets, the Twins just made the mistake of doubling (tripling) down on Pelfrey. Why would we want to sign more guys for 2-3 years now though? We don't need 2-3 year bridges, we need 1 year bridges, maybe two month bridges. The prospects might not pan out, but we at least have to find out. Pitchers on guaranteed multi year deals aren't going to get benched or released. Pitchers on one year deals may though. Which pitchers would you even need to offer 3 year deals to anyway? Jason Hammel, Brandon McCarthy, Francisco Liriano, Jake Peavy and Edinson Volquez look like the only guys who might demand three but won't be able to get more. Not much there I want.
  11. The Santana trade is in the books, but the Knoblauch trade is still paying dividends! Duensing (comp pick for losing Christian Guzman) and Lester Oliveros (Brian Buchanan begat Jason Bartlet who (partially) begat Delmon Young who begat Oliveros). I swear I only throw Duensing's name in trade projections simply to keep this tree growing!
  12. You only say that because you wish the Twins would have used one of the extra picks on that Trout guy.
  13. Well Cleveland got a pretty good prospect for him despite his down season. If he's looking for a make good deal, I'd love to take the chance that the Twins get an improved performance and get an even better return for him mid-season.
  14. I kind of thought Willis had a bit of an Anderson curve to his coaching career. He started off promoting some promising performances but his pitchers soon tailed off significatnly. He looked good when he had strong pitchers, but that's the easy part. Was he able to get subpar pitchers to pitch above their skill level? Also, Lee's K numbers didn't take off until he left Willis. They took off like the minute he got traded actually.
  15. Good stuff Parker. I like Masterson, largely based on the belief that he'll get a short term deal. I love ceiling and could care less about floor as should the Twins considering there is some credible pitching depth in May, Meyer, Milone, Gilmartin, et al.
  16. Not to mention that if he didn't have the injury concerns, he likely would cost more than the Twins would be willing to pay.
  17. Well he doesn't steal many bases. As he has speed, that likely is more a symptom of his inabilaty to get on base, which is a much larger problem than simply failing to swipe a bag.
  18. Ouch. It sounded like the whole gang flew to southern California to tell Lovullo he didn't get the job. They've certainly kept tight lips on this one. No surprise I guess, though this might be as important of a hire as the manager position all things considered.
  19. Gross, no. No power, very little threat on the bases and minimal on base skills. I think everyone is trying to over compensate for the poor defense. I don't want to create another black hole in the lineup intentionally. If the Cardinals released him, sure, he's an upgrade to Schafer, but I'm not giving up anything resembling a prospect for a one year stop gap on a losing team. Any functional franchise wouldn't give him more than 300 AB in a season.
  20. Atlanta probably has little interest in a DH like Vargas. Santana and Gibson would have some value, but combined they probably couldn't get Miller, which means you'd probably have to use those two and a Berrios or better to get Heyword. For one year. In which they are expected to be bad with or without Heyword. Santana is young plays the two most premium positions though. I would bet his value leaguewide may actually be more than we expect.
  21. It's really hard to imagine a world where the Twins aren't among the teams with the greatest need for a middle infielder, yet here we are. This must be in bizarro world.
  22. Sano, Meyer, Rosario, Gilmartin, Michael, Wheeler and they'll surprise us with one, I'll say Tyler Jones. Thompson, Fryer, Herrmann and Colabello lose their spots.
  23. Prospects like Jenkins always bother me, but I'll admit I am extremely prejudiced against guys who can't miss bats in A ball. Miller is still a better trade chip than any pitcher in the Twins system though. Berrios might be sniffing his level, but he's not there at this time. We can't forget that while the prospect luster wears off guys once they make it to the MLB level, GM's tend to favor the "MLB ready" tag more than those who rate raw prospects. The Twins didn't have the pieces to pull this one off without making it hurt way too much. They also aren't likely to offer Heyword the $130 million extension required to keep him past 2015.
  24. Ha, I hope you realize the implication of Hughes chosing Minnesota in part because of their pitching coach at the time!
  25. I seem to value Plouffe less than others, so now that the Twins have CBSsports helping to promote their product for them, I'm game!
