Per Brock's point number one, I think it's a little early to say the Twins are good drafters. We need to see the payoff. We all thought the Royals farm was awesome not that long ago. I agree with the rest though. The Twins could stink for the next decade, but no matter how we feel about the Nolasco, Hughes and Santana signings, Pittsburgh and KC would have never committed that much money to free agents when they were terrible. That tells me, if all else fails they may be willing to Padre their way out of the basement.

How depressing, the over/under on my correct picks was 13.5. I should have picked the under.

Oh I'm sure they will, just as they misguidedly have the past four years. This team won't be competing until the young guys are ready, and they won't be ready until they start playing. Isn't it better to struggle now in an effort to be better in the future? Youth and upside should weigh more heavily on roster decisions than experience. If Pelfrey is the "best" pitcher this spring and is given the job, how would that help the team in 2016 or beyond?

He was my pick for the Gray/Aiken move this year. Plus, I mean come on, the name is way too sweet to pass up if he's there at number six!

Milone pitched well extremely pitcher friendly Oakland. A pitcher who throws poorly there is about as rare as a pop foul reaching the seats. Most people, Beane included and likely Ryan as well, see the writing on the wall. His mid 80's fastball is a mirage and it won't stand up, particularly when he's coming from the stadium with the most foul territory and going to one with among the least.

Sorry to derail. I tend to think a pitcher with a 4.0 BB/9 can still make it at the majors. I also think a middle infielder who struggles to get on base can still make it if he has a nice glove. I just don't think it will work for a corner outfielder. I don't mean to sound negative, I love Walker's power potential and he sounds like a good guy, but it just seems to me that a promotion would send the wrong message. And I don't think he's a lost cause by a long shot. I just think the severity of this deficiency needs to come across loud and clear.

Well for one thing, the "struggles" we're pretty subjective. Neither Gibson nor May were struggling in any truly meaningful way in AAA. I was simply suggesting that struggles at the MLB level were expected and it would be best to get them out of the way. For another, in this analogy there was very little difference between the HS students than the college students anyway.

Yes Gibson, May and Meyer are the main talking points when questions arise about slow promotions. Gibson and May have struggled upon their arrival, but that doesn't tell me the club was right to wait, it tells me the opposite. They were viewed as "ready" before their call up yet they still struggled implying being "ready" doesn't occur until they get acclimated to the MLB. Gibson should have been allowed to struggle in early 2013 with the hope he'd be useful at the end of the season and closer to his potential to start 2014. The same should have been done with May. This team has been historically awful, yet they seemed to keep the young arms down at least in part because they didn't want to chance making the MLB product worse. If that played any part in the decisions, and I'd bet it did, they were very short-sighted. I don't know why there is an idea that guys have to learn in the minors and education ends upon a call up.

The A's were smart enough to consider what he would do for them going forward, not what he did in the past. The A's had just traded for Samardzjia and Hammel and had no room for Gray, Kazmir, Chavez and Milone. Milone had by far the lowest upside and was the least likely to succeed going forward. Seems like an easy call to me. If the Twins are smart, they'll also put most of their deciding votes on the guys with higher upside.

Blocked from the #1 pick by the Phillies? Damn you Vegas!

I think putting top pitchers drafted from major conferences in the rookie leagues is coddling. I think not letting top pitching prospects work out their kinks at the MLB level even when your MLB starters are serving up BP nightly is coddling. I don't think this team coddles the batters. However, possibly because of such a lack of success this past decade, they appear overly cautious with the starting pitchers, perhaps because the organization is unsure of how best to develop them, perhaps because they think if a player is injury prone he shouldn't be on the MLB roster. That being said, Berrios doesn't look like he's going to get much of a stop sign, neither do several of the college arms drafted in the last three years. Things may be changing.

I could care less about the strikeouts. I care that he doesn't appear to have either very good zone recognition or patience. That doesn't translate to the MLB level. If MLB pitchers know you're strikeout prone AND you can't take a walk, he'll never see a hittable pitch.

I'm not disagreeing, but half of our population agree with him as do half of our elected officials and probably a good portion of his teammates. Are you seriously asking the team to stop employing every socially conservative player? The team would win about 10 games. If we don't seperate politics from other areas of our lives, sports would be absolutely worthless to follow.

But whether his actions are professional or not isn't the issue. Hunter is being tasked with relating to the young guys, not being the clubhouse chaplin (though from his rep, he may do that too). The belief is that Hunter has a knack for tutoring and getting the best out of young players on the field regardless of any unprofessional behavior.
  15. nicksaviking
Yeah, I really don't like his view on that subject but it's a popular view with southern Christians and Hispanic demographics, which largely makes up the Twins clubhouse. So there's a pretty good chance that I'd dislike the view of a majority of the players. I'd prefer Hunter doesn't talk about those things to the other players, and perhaps he doesn't, but odds are, he's already preaching to the choir if he is. Even so, I don't follow these guys for their voting records, I just want to see them play good baseball. If we only accepted players who shared our social and political views, we'd severely be cutting down on the pool of players available to us. This is Twins vs White Sox not The Huffington Post vs Fox News.

I think he did. He was pretty upset about his service time ramifications. He's OK depth, but he had little trade value last year as we found out; he shouldn't have much now. I'm not really concerend with a return though, I just don't want him getting in the way of the higher ceiling guys.
  17. nicksaviking
With Harrison, Reed and Turner out of the top 20, I'd guess he made room for them. Those three are often higher on other lists so they had to get bumped by someone.
  18. nicksaviking
Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I think they did their best to find the veteran innings eater to put at the front of the rotation this year. I think they'd really prefer May and soon Meyer. But that could just be spring optimism. I tend to turn dour regarding the front office once they start proving my hopeful expectations wrong.
  19. nicksaviking
I agree, very seldom do players bad mouth each other. In that vein, I think it's pretty impossible to say he's failry disliked in the clubhouse. We have heard Hunter's political views, and while the content of of his politcis don't tend to endear themselves to the majority of Minnesotans, we don't know the political leanings of the majority of baseball players who largely hail from the south and Hispanic countries. As far as I know, we also don't even have any anecdotal evidence that he discusses politics in the club house. We have heard former teammates on the Twins and Angels voice their frustration when their clubs didn't make a stronger attempt to retain him, and he did have a considerable number of suitors despite being a 39-year-old corner outfielder with declining defensive skills, including this team, which seems to be pretty concerned with clubhouse chemistry. We really can't say that he is truely liked by his teammates, but he has a lot more check marks in his "like" column than he does in his "dislike" column. For what it's worth, I wanted this team to get younger and stay away from aging vets, but if this team thinks his presence will have a positive impact on the young guys, I'm on board seeing as the guys under 28 are really the only players I'm concered with at this time.
  20. nicksaviking
Adam Dunn could take a walk. Lots of the actually. He was always among the league leaders. As a corner outfielder, Walker is going to have to get on base or he'll stall out really quickly.
  21. nicksaviking
I'm usually a "push" guy as I don't like babying these guys but I think Anti-Walker needs to open in Ft. Myers. Usually my beef with the slow promotion is that I don't want these guys getting coddled and end up soft. Perhaps it's just me, but guys who refuse to take pitches even when it would seem their livelihood depends on it, seem somewhat stubborn and could use remedial correction, not a reward which would only encourage the lack of discipline.
  22. nicksaviking
I assume you're referencing Morneau who has multiple times since said the incident was overblown and he liked Hunter? I'm guessing you're projecting your own feelings when you say he is "fairly disliked in the clubhouse." Certainly no one is liked by all (except Chief) but all evidence indicates he is widely liked by teammates.
  23. nicksaviking
Yes, that has been my point. RF in Target Field is small, instincts and craftiness are going to be more useful in that small space most noted for strange wall angles and no foul territory. It's much different than cavernous Comerica Park. That's assuming Hunter plays in RF and not LF. Even if they do stick him in LF (and the shouldn't) his declining range isn't worse than Willingham or Kubel. Of course no one is going to be able find any silver lining when they stick him in CF.

Geez, the 20 year olds are working and the old guys are partying? It must be the end of times.

They have, usually he also qualifies his statements saying his sources say it is unlikely to happen. This time he didn't, but he might just have been feeling lazy today.
