  1. I agree, if the team was intent on competing, the pen should have been fixed earlier. Still, could they have gotten Jepsen four weeks earlier? TB was still in contention. Probably had to be done in the off season or pre season. I'd guess the Twins will be thinking about that come November.
  2. I didn't want to give up value for vets on long term deals. I was also ready to ride the 2015 season down the drain, which is where it looked to be headed at the time. Glad the season turned back around. Still, I'm glad they didn't get any vets on long term deals, however if they were going to upgrade the bullpen with Jepsen, they should have gone all out on the pen and done a quick overhaul with strong arms who wouldn't cost much. The Twins missed the boat letting the Cardinals get both Jon Broxton and Steve Cishek when both were basically salary dumps. This team still has to turn to Fien and Boyer and only trusts about five guys in the pen in close games.
  3. Flyballs that drop in and are ruled a hit simply because the outfielder totally wiffed on the ball. If the outfielder makes a slightly less terrible play and at least gets his glove on it, then it is an error.
  4. I want to like your post for the provided insight, but geez, the content is so completely unlikeable I just can't do it. That would be disappointing considering we were sold on the belief that Stewart had mid-to-upper 90's heat which seems to have turned into low-to-mid-90's heat and he had a wipeout slider. If he can't get that slider going, I don't see what there is to look forward to. Sinkers and changeups are the calling card of low-ceiling, high-contact, back-of-the-rotation starters everywhere.
  5. Good question, it would seem to be the biggest unknown with Stewart even while there's no reason for it not to be known. Nearly everyone who is anyone when it comes to strikeouts, throws a slider or a curve on 20% or more of their pitches, and their fastball is generally used less than 55%.
  6. Yeah, I guess I do. Though I'd guess West has also done this, likely in a weekly basis.
  7. I'd trade Dozier if the Twins were getting back some elite talent. So in other words, if they are made an offer they can't refuse. His second half slide would probably keep that from happening, but with the dearth of 2B in the league right now, you never know. Personally, I think Dozier puts together a more complete year next year, and I'd bet good money that he changes his approach in the off-season. I think most people forget that Dozier was a completely different hitter prior to 2013. In the minors he was mostly a decent average hitter with good on-base skills and his 2012 season with the Twins show that he hit (poorly) to all fields. It appears to me that he only started to be a dead-pull hitter after he or the team saw what kind of success Willingham had doing just that at Target Field. I don't know if Dozier will be able to adjust, but there's no doubt both Dozier and the team realize there's a problem here, so I'd be shocked if they don't try some adjustments for next year.
  8. My pet peeve is when people use the term "human element" when if fact what they really mean is "human error". If one is of the mind that umpire screw ups are supposed to be a part of the game, say it like it really is. Joe West calling a double that lands two feet fair a foul ball isn't a charming "human element" that should remain a part of the game. Neither should a Joe West strike call that's a foot outside.
  9. Sorry, Chief, should have known "decline phase" wasn't very PC to use around you.
  10. I'd say Friday's loss, simply because at it was the most recent, we had a much clearer picture of what it was going to take in terms of victories to come out on top. Also, I'd like to throw in the seven, "Let's give Ricky another shot" starts early in the year, but the team went 6-1 in his games somehow.
  11. And the sports car industry.
  12. Right, but a kids not getting drunk just because he's sitting next to dad who's having some beer. Maybe I'm misremembering college or perhaps I was easily susceptible, but I used to feel a noticeable buzz if if I was exposed to it (but not cool enough to be offered a hit). And again, I'm not in favor of the current criminalization, just curious if anyone has heard discussions of my real only concern.
  13. I didn't get to see the first five, but I don't care how shakey Pelfrey was, you can't turn the game over to Biyer and Fien in the sixth if May is unavailable.
  14. Anyone know if there are statutes in the legalized pot states regarding smoking pot with children in the home? Because that's really my only issue with the whole bit. Is anyone held accountable for getting their toddler stoned off of second hand smoke or worse yet, getting my kid stoned because he's over playing with the neighbor kid? Or is lack of consequence a part of the whole deal? I'm just curious, I'm quite a bit more pro than con, but I haven't heard this part addressed before.
  15. When he was on early in the year, he seemed to have an ornery but confident demeanor on the mound. Lately he's been ornery but has seemed more frustrated than confident. That kind of tells me he doesn't yet trust himself. I'll trust him again once he starts trusting himself. I'm guessing that will come once he shakes off the rust, locates his fastball better and resumes his previous steady usage of his slider which had always been 25-30% of the time. It'll happen, just not quite yet.
  16. Gibson had 31 starts and 179 innings last year which was an increase of 27 innings from 2013. He's also had 31 starts in 2015, and while his innings have only increase by 9, he has thrown 3131 pitches this year compared to only 2800 last year. That's like adding 3-4 extra starts for him. I'm not into babying pitchers, but I would expect Gibson's season long consistency to even out once his year-to-year workload evens out. On a slight side note, people have been crediting Gibson for being an effective sinkerballer since he was drafted, but his slider and change up are actually rated much better. I think if he used those pitches more he'd get more swings and misses and cut down on his number of pitches. I know some argue that putting the ball in play is the most efficient way to cut down on pitches, but it seems to me too many batters are able to consistently foul off borderline sinkers that the contact route is actually more detrimental to pitch counts. Any year you search, there is an undeniably high correlation between pitchers with high inning totals and high strikeout totals.
  17. Gibson has never seemed like a big game pitcher to me, however for me that has always basically boiled down to being able to pile up strikeouts. But last night just made me think he's gassed. He had the complete game loss a few starts back and then pitched into the 8th the next time out, but he looks like he hit the wall, I thought that last month and he might have gotten his 2nd wind, but he even looks worn out.
  18. Well one of them was a world class athlete (even if he was a pitcher) while the other guy looks like an athlete the way a league bowler looks like an athlete. All of my concerns with Perkins boil down to his age, as it does with nearly every pitcher. However, his velocity is higher than when he went on the shelf, which if anything, is encouraging to me. He's not using his slider enough, and he's not locating. Unlike velocity, those typically aren't uncorrectable issues that occur with age; he probably just needs repetition. Of course, this is not the ideal time for remedial fastball location and slider control work. He should be good to go next year though, barring another injury.
  19. The one game WC game shouldn't have more than two starters, and the non-starting starter should only be there in case of a long extra innings game.
  20. It looked like he was hitting 94 and at least once 95. I think his velocity is there, just a rusty slider. Perk definitely had an attitude tonight though, I was really hoping the camera would have shown Perkins and Rosario meeting at the end of the game. I don't like him showing up the young fielders, but maybe a little stink eye is OK. Clearly he was showing up the ump. That's not good, but perhaps there's more that we didn't see, after all, the ump did turn out to be the type to toss a guy after the game was over. That stinks of arrogance and making sure he has the last word.
  21. Argh. Twins bullpen + runners in scoring position = soon to be riots on Twins Daily.
  22. With only two starts left, there should be no cause to limit Santan's pitch count.
  23. I wonder if Jeff Manship has ever struck out the side before?
