  1. I'm actually going to be a bit happy if they miss out on the next tier of pitching, because I think it will force their hand to make some trades instead, which I'd much prefer. But if that comes to fruition, I wouldn't buy into them saying that it was all part of their master plan, all along!
  2. No I agree, I have been willing to give the new guys a long leash, particularly after putting together a really good club last year. I've been a fan so far. I also kind of get the feeling that despite a really intriguing free agent class, things have absolutely not been breaking the Twins way either and we didn't see this coming. But I kind of think the front office should have been able to get better intel then us so they could see it coming. For instance, IF free agents were turned off by geography, I think that's something the front office needs to figure out earlier so as not to waste time on those guys. I also think they failed to read the market and were surprised by the insane spending by the big money teams. I mean all of us were, but the teams on the I-95 corridor and the teams in Southern California weren't. None of them flinched at the other teams' offers, I suspect they knew this was coming, and I think our team should have been prepared.
  3. I was kind of skeptical about that Fangraphs article detailing the Benintendi/Rodriguez pot sweetening angle, and I still am a bit, but thinking about it more, any team looking to deal with the Red Sox would really have them over the barrel. Next year Price will be a 10/5 guy with the Sox so he could veto any trade. If they want to get rid of him, it's basically now or never.
  4. Yeah, I saw a blurb earlier where Falvey was asked about trades and he said they were mostly concerned with free agents right now. Which was AFTER there were reports that Wheeler, Bumgarner and Ryu weren't interested in coming here. The legitimacy of those reports are hardly relevant, if there are indications that the targets you want may not reciprocate the feelings, start working the trade angle to get a guy who has to come here. Don't focus all of your energy on the guys giving you the cold shoulder.
  5. While I agree about the fixation on dollar figures, I don't know that I agree with the entire premise. There are plenty of, maybe even most, high dollar free agents that I have little interest in, while there are quite a few cheaper upside free agents I'd prefer. Or even better yet, youthful trade targets who are inexpensive. If for instance the Twins traded for Blake Snell, traded Rosario for Alcantara and rounded out the rotation with Rich Hill, while signing the likely inexpensive Kole Calhoun to replace Rosario, I'd be thrilled and the payroll would probably be what, 110M? Easily bottom 20 of the league. But I only like the destination, I don't really care about the route they took to get there. But what I don't like is that this team ALWAYS takes the same route. Try something different for once, go outside of your comfort zone some time. Just because they can build a team inexpensively doesn't mean they HAVE to.
  6. I totally agree, it's way more about perception than it is reality. Perception almost always kicks reality's butt though. Not just with this baseball stuff, with everything.
  7. I've been to all ten opening day's since Target Field opened, and have been snowed upon twice. Obviously the weather hands out some unexpectedly nice days, but baseball in Minnesota more often than not isn't played in pleasant weather until about mid May. At least not as far as what much of the country considers pleasant.
  8. Please don't ask us to do math on this board. But seriously, Santana, Nolasco and Lynn were the 2nd tier pitchers when they were free agents. I was happy the team took the initiative to sign them, but I didn't actually care for any of those pitchers when they got them. We're dealing with some unexpected inflation at the moment, but Bumgarner, Ryu and Keuchel are still 2019's version of Santana, Nolasco and Lynn, and I'm still not interested. I want them to go big (which didn't happen) or get creative another way. I don'l like these low ceiling consolation prizes.
  9. For one you're only on the hook for three years with Price instead of 5 years for Bumgarner. Also, despite Price's warts, he's been better than Bumgarner each of the last three seasons. I also have significant concerns that Bumgarner will be able to even be league average in terms of strikeout percentage upon a move to the AL. Tom's piece the other day has me concerned it's going to drop much more significantly than other pitchers making the league switch.
  10. Yes, even though I still like the idea that Price still has a shot to lead the rotation, the potential of that second piece being a rotation upgrade is equally if not more exciting. Which, maybe you just cut out a step and take the underrated Eduardo Rodriguez instead. He was really good last year.
  11. Yes please. If it was Price and Benintendi, I might even consider keeping Rosario and then try to flip the cheaper, more controllable and bigger named Benintendi for an even bigger pitching prize.
  12. If somebody could explain why Caleb Smith strikes out so many batters when his stuff looks so bland and why Alcantara strikes out so few batters when his stuff looks so nasty that would be great.
  13. They hit plenty of HR, and even if that was the number one priority, Rooker and Wiel are just as capable of going deep. Though I've always liked Eddie and think he's probably a good clubhouse guy, I thnk the Twins need somebody who takes good at bats and gets on base regularly.
  14. I might take Matt Barnes in lieu of a prospect If Boston is doing a quasi rebuild, he's not going to them much good with only two years of control left.
  15. He definitely wouldn't be my top trade target, but his strikeout rate is still elite, which to me means there's still ample room to dream on in Game 1. I maybe see if there is a fun comprise with Chris Sale first though.
  16. Coach or first class back to Minnesota? Just make a decision already!
  17. Yeah, looks like they're talking Dustin May and Gavin Lux for Lindor so far? At least Lux hasn't developed as expected. Oh, wait, .607 was his SLG.?!? I thought that was his OPS.....
  18. Even that title has been difficult for them to achieve lately.
  19. With Ray having only one year of control left and Rosario two, it might not even have to be a great prospect. I like Ray's potential more than his results so far, I don't think he'll demand a terrible toll, though I know others see it differently.
  20. I have a complete lack of understanding why people absolutely feel the need to blame somebody. Sometimes things just suck, the upper midwest being the butt of national jokes and inaccurate perceptions is one of those things.
  21. Yeah, I can promise that telling my wife that since it's a workday I'm not going to watch the kids, run errands, do yard work, chores, fix anything or pay any attention to the family whatsoever after work isn't going to fly at my house. My day neither starts or ends at work. Also, I'm guessing not many baseball wives are fine living apart from their husbands for five months while he chills with his bachelor teammates all summer.
  22. James Roweson meeting his new team: "Hey everybody, you all know what they called my hitters back in Minnesota right? Well who's ready to make up my new Bomboooooooooooh dear lord what have I gotten myself into?!"
  23. Well to be fair, the degree of your right-ness is now dependent on my right-ness, which also has a very shoddy track record. If accurate, this may be an extreme statistical anomaly.
  24. He probably knows that his employment evaluation will be tied to how his team hits, and a roster full of 23-year-old AAAA bats is probably not good for job security.
