    I could be wrong, but I thought Reed actually has some good pitches and good velocity. Achter and Anthony Slama were junkball righties throwing 89-90 MPH. I thought Jake Reed had mid-90s stuff, has that changed?

    With all the promotions of no-name journeymen and prospects who lost their luster years ago, it just seems so weird that Reed has been passed over for three years now. I mean the Twins have already had 18 guys throw relief innings this year and you can add in 15 completely different guys that pitched out of the pen last year but are already gone. And no, that doesn't count the position players. There's got to be more to this story, how is it possible Reed is 33rd in line for the job?

    How many adults just happen to pick up chew? I don't care what Buxton does, especially when he's at home. It's the 16-year-olds watching him that are making that decision and 16-year-olds make 5 poor decision for every 1 good decision. He doesn't have to be a role model, but if he doesn't want to do the right thing by not perpetuating the idea that ballplayers have to chew, then I have no problem if someone else tells him he can't do it at the ballpark anymore.

    As someone who might be tempted by that 3000 calorie platter, they can go right ahead and get rid of that as well. If getting rid of chew 10 years ago would have stopped a young Byron Buxton from starting, then it wouldn't have just been PR, and if getting rid of it now stops Byron Buxton from influencing next generation, that's not PR either.

    And I've said you have valid points with alcohol even if I don't agree with them all, again, what is your justification for keeping tobacco other than "If I can't have mine you can't have yours"?

    Chewing tobacco is 6%, not overall tobacco use. And like most people, I don't mind if my kids become adults and have a drink or two because I know if they use moderation, they will be healthy and fine. Your one dip a day is nice not the norm; people considered tobacco users are not afforded moderation due to the nature of the product and the additional addictive properties pumped into them, they are by design, unhealthy, alcohol in moderation is not. But again, not the point. If you think alcohol should be banned if tobacco is banned, fine, but alcohol is more ingrained in society and would be difficult to prohibit again, so let's start with the easy one.

    Alcohol is dangerous when used illegally. I'm fine if tobacco can stays, as long as the nicotine is just removed. We have a long history of banning harmful ingestible chemicals, I'm not sure why this is treated differently. If nicotine were removed, tobacco would be on more square footing with alcohol, as booze is something that only a small percentage of people are addicted to while nearly everyone who uses tobacco is addicted.

    I'm a beer drinker, and I don't think your argument against alcohol advertising is out of line at all. I might not be in favor of it, but there's plenty of merit there. But it doesn't take away from the fact that these guys are perpetuating a habit that no one wants their kids picking up.

    I'm not sure what my post has to do with your alcohol comparison. Are you trying to say that the current ballplayers who chew aren't perpetuating the habit? But arguments that try to demonize something else as justification don't carry much weight. Feel free to argue for or against an alcohol ban, but saying tobacco should be allowed because alcohol is worse is like arguing that Mussolini should stay in office since Hitler is an even worse dictator.

    Right, but 37% of your coworkers weren't doing it. Ballplayers are doing it because of watching another ballplayer on TV, because of baseball tradition, or some other outdated idea. I mean 37% compared to 6% isn't a coincidence. Buxton and other players chewing IS perpetuating the use for the next generation. One can argue that it's their right to perpetuate it, but I don't think one can argue that they aren't perpetuating it.

    It is all very weird that this is nearly a baseball exclusive issue. If their non-baseball peers aren't doing it, and it's not allowed in HS, college, minor league and half of the major league stadiums, that means these guys are actively going out of their way to start this habit. It's not like the Senior catcher is sitting next to the Freshman in the dugout pressuring him to try it anymore.

    I liked the fact that he had plenty of success in the AL prior to moving to the NL, so I wanted him earlier in the year, but yeah those red flags are getting to be concerning. If toe taps and velocity are his biggest issues, it does seem like Wes Johnson might be the right man to get him straightened out, but it's not like we've seen enough to do anything better than cross our fingers, so I'd look at other targets first. Though I'd still probably circle back after getting someone of more significance.

    Well they already did it once this year, and for a guy without a position. With the Twins no less. I don't know about realistic timelines, but it looks like many if not most teams these days, even rebuilding ones, want controllable MLB ready players they can run out to the field to show the fans they aren't actually rebuilding. Seems like there is a Jake Cave or two in most trades these days involving multiple players moving from one club.

    I'd take Garret, Iglesis or Stephenson. The Reds think they're close to contending though, I'm not sure they'd move any of them. But since they have three good controllable bullpen arms, maybe. Even if the Twins were willing to pay division rival prices for Hand, I kind of suspect Cleveland wouldn't work with the Twins. I can see why an up-and-coming team would be willing to trade within the division, but there's going to be a bit of resentment from the team getting knocked off of the pedestal. I doubt Detroit would have the same reservations, but I don't want Greene. He'll be giving Sano a workout if he's closing games. As much as I'm enjoying Sano so far this year, I don't want to put the game in his, or any of the infielder's hands in the 9th.

    I like to hear as well, but since the team has a nice long homestand that would make sense. Bringing them in while the club was on a 10 game road trip probably wouldn't have made as much of an impression on the young men.

    While I'm a bit jealous as we've seen other clubs signing players already, it seems to me that lately the Twins have been making a production out of it and they've been waiting until multiple players are able to make it to Minneapolis so they can have some ceremonious signings in front of media and then meet-and-greets. If that's how it goes, it might drive us crazy, but that's pretty nice that they're doing it for these young guys who are probably already pretty stoked about it in the first place.

    If they have to give them a 500K each, are those two the best HS/JC kids to try to temp? I wouldn't want them just because they're local.

    Nice move, tempt the kids with hometown glory and a teammate they're already friends with. Or if that doesn't work, just offer the one that throws 97 MPH the other kid's share of the bonus money too.

    Pizza party. Honestly though, if these are the guys they like best, there's no reason not to spend it all. This may be a completely bonkers idea (at least for a billionaire) but if they did save up some money early in the draft, I'd be more than happy to see the guys at the end get a bonus big enough to pay more than a month's worth of rent.

    He's only 20 so there's probably sign-ability issues. Of course the Twins affinity for power bats and positional flexibility should be a good selling point to this young man. Though probably not as good of a selling point as a well over-slot bonus.

    With all these college seniors, how much money has this team banked? Are they just going to draft one of the HS kids at pick 40 and offer him all of the money?

    I'm kind of bummed about the lack of HS kids, though I suppose they can still try to get some later, if they're somehow able to get some of these college juniors to go underslot. I'm less concerned about the power/positional profile of these middle infielders. There seems to be a lot of them so it's likely someone will stick. Also, squeezing power out of the bats seems to be a new talent of this club. If they truly have found a trick to it, then getting guys who everyone else is unsure about developing power is a pretty smart move.

    I usually like the unexpected picks, they give me way more hope that the front office didn’t fall victim to group think.
