If nothing else comes from this trade, getting a reliever locked into the pen should help the team immediately start ridding themselves of that gaggle of control deficient relief retreads they signed en masse two weeks ago. I swear I'm not a completely heartless guy, but I had (and still have) no interest in any of them making the team.

You're kidding right? The front office has traded for a starter just about every year. And there is zero chance, ZERO that you have any knowledge of how those trades transpired. Again. ZERO. In fact, of Odorizzi, Maeda, Paddock, Gray and Lopez, none of them were traded for prior to February 14th. That's a half month away. And a couple of those guys were acquired in March and April. So maybe you're jumping the gun a bit here. The offseason isn't over.

I know they are a team that lots of fans dislike, but I've always had reasons to be a Steelers fan. But boy, I think this will be Tomlin's last contract. What the heck are they doing over there? Maybe it's just lip service and they have no intention of going with Pickett or Rudolph, but are they too deep into the forest to see that they need to find an actual NFL QB to make a playoff run? And now they are hiring Arthur Smith as OC? Maybe they'll prove everyone wrong, Pittsburg is good at that, but this guy has no business being an OC, and yet it makes perfect sense. Smith just came from being the most offensively criticized head coach for how he was squandering his offensive talent in Atlanta, and it's no surprise. He had previously been the OC in Tennessee, where he ran a conservative ball-control offense. And that's the rub with these defensive head coaches. They almost all think defense is as important, or even more important than the offense. They all want to 'establish the run' and 'control the clock'. Yet the only current successful team that does that, is the 49ers, who actually control the clock by throwing a ton of high percentage passes on 1st and 2nd down to make the run game more manageable. For the best running back in the league no less. PFT and other outlets are surprised that Belichick and Vrabel didn't get another job. I'm not, no ownership wants that brand of cautious low scoring offense. It doesn't put people in the stands and more importantly, it doesn't help you win.

Yeah, I don't care about the prospect rankings, Keith just crushed in a league that Lee struggled at a bit. I'm not trying to be a huge downer, but I think the expectations of Lee is a bit much. He just doesn't look to have a high ceiling. Unlike Keith, he only has moderate power and his on base skills are good, but not top end. Lee is almost certainly ranked higher right now because of draft equity, and that would work against a long term extension. Lee already got a pretty big payday for being a high draft pick. With money to fall back on, these guys tend to bet on themselves more often.

Fun fact, these are three of the only 11 teams with longer World Series droughts than the Twins. For all the accolades the Rays have gotten, they're now a one-and-done playoff team regularly. These organizations can build sustained respectable teams, but this method of not sacrificing any future and going that extra mile now is almost certainly what keeps them from winning a championship. There was that one non-major market outlier team which did the opposite approach, the Royals. They went counter-intuitive with contending and it paid off for them. And yes, I'll take a half decade of struggles for one World Series win, that's all I am interested in seeing from the Twins.

Yeah, agree. They need to nail that area down.

I wouldn't be opposed to that, but the defensive front seven is where I want them to use all but one of their draft picks. Those positions seem to have a higher success rate than OL and CB.
-
I'm not sure, but I hope it goes toward the O-Line. Top free agent linemen are perhaps the most reliable producers, and drafted linemen seem to be amongst the least reliable (at least as far as this franchise goes the last two decades). Then spend it on a corner back. CBs are the RBs of the defense, stop wasting high picks there. Most aren't worth offering a second contract to, so offer one to a guy who has already shown he is servicable.

Polanco is an oft injured aging 2B with declining defense, I don't think he ever had the value to other teams that he did to a fan base that has falling in love with him for the last decade. It was always going to take top prospects to get a top end starter.

Well then I can think of 70M additional reasons why he wouldn't. And whatever number you can cook up, his agent will cook up one even higher. They players union would probably lynch him if he considered such a foolish move too. Find one example of an elite pitcher ever getting traded in his walk year and signing an extension during the season.

Why would Burnes accept any kind of extension midway through his walk year when he could test free agency three months later?

There is nothing left in free agency that I want. Again, I'm not upset about this trade, it was the perfect sell high moment for Polanco, but the only thing helpful for 2024 is a 33-year-old reliever with injury concerns. If that's the best they could do, fine. I didn't want prospects, but it's not like I'd refuse them if that was the best offer.

I have no interest in Burnes. They need to get controllable pitchers, I don't want to do this dance EVREY year. Bieber and Cease are a bit better with two years left, but I'm not terribly interested in them either. Bieber's plummeting K% is alarming, I think the clock is about to strike midnight on him. For Cease, you'd have to pay for his 2022 season and his other seasons have only been average, and the Twins would probably have to trade twice the haul to get him than any other team in the league.

I certainly hope they pivot to Miami. I'm guessing after trading them a 2B last year, they probably didn't have the same level of interest in Polanco. Maybe that's the Kepler stop. And I'm in the same boat, I'm all for including Festa in a deal. I'd actually move Lee first if needed and Rodriguez last, but both are on the table for me.

I'm not bummed about moving Polanco, one more injury and he's got NO value. I am bummed about not being able to get one of Seattle's young pitchers, though if Seattle was refusing to move them, there's not much to do about it. As far as the money saved goes though, the last of the three free agents I wanted, Justin Turner, just signed. So at this point I couldn't care less what payroll is. I'd rather go with the roster we have than hand out dumb contracts to what's left on the market.

The Seattle reporter made it pretty clear they were dead-set on keeping their young pitching and the Twins weren't getting any of them. And considering this deal pretty much goes against Levine's comments just days ago about how the team wasn't looking to deal for prospects, and now he's got a whole pile of crow to eat, I'm guessing that until last night, the Twins were dead-set on getting that young pitching.

I don't like the idea of DeSclafani being handed a starting gig, so I'm presuming that's not automatic. But to be fair, he had a couple year spike in terms of velocity a few seasons back, but last year it was in line with most seasons, so it doesn't look like he's washed up. Or at least, if he's washed up now, he always was. Looks like his slider is still a good pitch. With his recent injury history, maybe DeSclafani is the one who auditions for a bullpen spot, not Varland. I'll be really disappointed if the Twins don't still address the top of the rotation.

If they go into next year's postseason without another top of the rotation arm, I'm going to be pretty disappointed. There are a couple of guys I wouldn't trade, but I'm more than confident the Twins can make a deal with some combination out of all the others. And I never once regretted the Lopez for Arraez trade. Not even when Arraez was hot early in the year and Lopez was merely average.

All the best coaches do that though. Shula, Walsh, Buddy Ryan, Belichick. Everyone else tries to do what everyone else is already doing. Innovation and change is the best way to get ahead in this league.
