  1. I think you meant 1994. Also Lewis Thorpe was born in 1995. That makes for a nice 4 man rotation right there.
  2. Duffey will earn his fair share, I'm just skeptical it will be with the Twins. With the log jam of pitchers coming up from the minors who could potentially be better than Duffey (Berrios, Meyer, Stewart, Gonsalves, Jay, and Thorpe) I just don't see a rotation spot for him here.
  3. And by 2019 Lewis Thorpe should be ready (provided he stays injury free). Personally I am higher on Thorpe's potential if healthy more so than any other pitching prospects. A quality 4 pitch starter with strike out potential isn't that easy to find.
  4. I seriously have to wonder if both Stewart and Gonsalves will be called up to AA together. I mean Gonsalves is 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA and has 24 k's (6 walks) in 25 innings while Stewart is 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 26 k's in 23 innings. With some spots open and one possible demotion (Ryan Eades) and Gonsalves and Stewart proving they have nothing left to prove in A+ ball it is time for their next challenge.
  5. I just hope Berrios can atone for this start. One thing Berrios did better than Duffey in his debut is not give up a homer (if I remember right Duffey gave up a 2 run homer and a grand slam). I'm not that opposed of sending Berrios down once either Santana or Gibson come back in the rotation (provided Berrios still is struggling). At this point even if Berrios gets sent down we now know the Twins will be fine bringing him back up again when he earns it again.
  6. Not the start I hoped for Berrios, but then again Duffey only lasted 2 innings and gave up 6 runs to have a nifty ERA of 27. And Matt Garza (the last highly touted pitcher before Berrios) went 2 2/3 innings gave up 7 runs to sport a nifty 23.62 ERA in his first start. So we need to relax (as does Jose). If he can calm down and pitch his game he will be fine.
  7. I think the Twins need to use Meyer like they did with Johan Santana and Fransisco Liriano and start Meyer out in the bullpen. And increase his workload if he succeeds and insert him in the rotation. Meyer is quite old for a AAA rotation and needs to simply face MLB hitting. Of the three pitchers (Berrios, Duffey, and Meyer) Meyer needs to stay up regardless of where he pitches. IMO, if Meyer does well next year's rotation will feature Meyer and Berrios and Duffey will be the odd man out.
  8. Looks like Jason Wheeler got promoted to Rochester as he is pitching today. So now with at least 2 slots open in Chattanooga will those two spots be filled by Gonsalves and Stewart? Both have dominated so far this season and with their success last year I just can't see any need to see if both pitchers are ready. Seems both Gonsalves and Stewart really did improve themselves in the off season. Time to take their "friendly rivalry" to Chattanooga and let Tyler Jay and Felix Jorge anchor Ft Meyers rotation.
  9. In terms of pure stuff and control yeah I can see how Berrios could be compared to Perdo Martinez. Add to that both are similar size and yeah I see it.
  10. I would not be surprised if Berrios struggles out of the gate, but from what I've seen from Berrios he knows how to adjust to make himself successful at the next level. Only issue I have is Berrios might over throw and have control issues as he does seem to be a high adrenaline pitcher at times. But once he settles in he will be good. People talk about his fastball, but the real reason he is a strike out pitcher is he KNOWS how to pitch and has 3 above average pitches and knows how and when to use them. On a personal note, I really want Berrios to succeed not so much because of the need for a top of the rotation starter, but because Berrios really WANTS to succeed and yet is humble off the field.
  11. http://m.milb.com/news/article/20160426174724472/gonsalves_unleashes_slider_in_latest_gem I came across this on milb.com. Sounds like yes, Gonsalves definitely knows how to pitch. Secondly it sounds as if Gonsalves' curve ball is definitely improved, and thirdly it sounds like Gonsalves likes his slider as well. Sounds like Gonsalves might be better than what most scouts expect from him.
  12. If Berrios faulters I'm sure Meyer will get the next look. Part of Meyer's problem was his horrendous season last year. He is 26, so I don't think the Twins will be overly paitent with him. Time to put up now.
  13. Another outstanding start from Gonsalves. First off I wonder if Gonsalves has really improved or has benefitted from another season at Ft Meyers. IMO I think Gonsalves must have improved his pitching as I don't think you can post a 1.44 ERA and not have improved. I know the season is early, but I think Gonsalves needs to be promoted now as Milone is out the door and if the Twins are looking for a lefty in the rotation Gonsalves might actually be available as soon as next year (provided Gonsalves pitches at least "good" in Chattanooga this year).
  14. I agree and remember Berrios talking about changing his pitching approach. Berrios at this point is so much more of a complete pitcher than any prospects I can remember. Plus at Rochester last year if his fastball didn't work he'd use his curve or change up. Now Matt Garza (the other super highly touted Twins pitcher) was dead set on over powering MLB hitters with his fastball only when he came up. He was no where as mature and was not good at making adjustments like Berrios is. Do I initially expect Berrios to struggle? Well yeah, but with Berrios supereme confidence in him self, his work ethic, and general high pitching IQ, I think he will be pretty good.
  15. I had heard that Gonsalves fastball is a bit faster than last year and he was working on his curveball at least over this year's spring training at least per reports I have read here.
  16. The difference between Berrios and Garza is Berrios has great secondary stuff and is willing to change his approach if one pitch isn't working. Honestly Berrios 2 curveballs are as good as his fastball and Berrios has no problem mixing in his change up as well. Garza came into the bigs expecting to over power hitters with his fastball and not adapt to MLB hitters.
  17. Well now it looks like the 3 top pitching prospects in Rochester have been promoted to the Twins. My question is with that shake up will that ultimately send Kohl Stewart and Stephen Gonsalves to Chattanooga as both pitchers have proven they are as good as advertised? Just curious since both pitchers pitched well last year in Ft Meyers as well (plus if Milone is out of the rotation Gonsalves is the best left hander to eventually make the rotation).
  18. Initially I could see Berrios struggle. It will take him a little while to adjust to Major League hitters and he may be a bit excited. But what I have seen so far is Berrios is smart and adjusts pretty quickly. Plus his three pitches are Major League quality stuff. Actually I am surprised, I could have sworn the Twins FO was going to wait and see with Berrios.
  19. Not to be a jerk, just curious. But why is Ryan so hesitant to bring Berrios up? Milone hasn't been real good and Santana (and possibly Duffey) are hurting. But from what I hear there are no plans in place to bring Berrios up anytime soon. Why? I mean he's going to dominate in AAA we all know that. What Berrios needs is to face batters that really challenge him IMO. And Berrios won't have much of that in AAA. I am excited for this kid, following him through the minors I have found he learns pretty quickly and is really smart when it comes to adjustments towards hitters and adjustments to the different levels of competition. I expect he will be the same once he gets to the big league club. Will he struggle at times? Well yeah, but I suspect he will recover quickly.
  20. Great to see Ryan have so much support for Berrios their best pitching prospect in the minors. If Ryan can't get behind Berrios he might as well trade him as Ryan doesn't believe in him anyway.
  21. Great to see Ryan have so much support for Berrios their best pitching prospect in the minors. If Ryan can't get behind Berrios he might as well trade him as Ryan doesn't believe in him anyway.
  22. And that is another reason Terry Ryan needs to go. Berrios is ready NOW. If Berrios was on any other MLB club he would have already been called up last year and may have been in the rotation this year. But penny pinching Ryan doesn't want to bring Berrios up this year at all. He wants Berrios to be a September call up NEXT year. Berrios right now is better than Duffey IMO and has been far and away more consistent than Alex Meyer has ever been. So what if Berrios is young for making his MLB debut? Didn't Stephen Strasberg pitch like the equivalent of 1 year in the minors before he was called up? This is year 4 of Berrios in the minors and there is NO WAY Ryan needs to see another full season of AAA ball to determine if Berrios is ready. If Ryan so on the fence with Berrios he might as well trade him away because it seems pretty clear Berrios really doesn't have a future here.
  23. If Meyer can do well in the pen I am sure he will get a look at as a starting pitcher as well, I just don't foresee the Twins bring super patient with Meyer though given how long he has been in the minors, especially with better talent right behind him. I feel this is the year Meyer either takes a step in the right direction with the Twins or he might either be traded before the season ends or let go outright after the season ends.
  24. I think what the Twins want to see is if Meyer can routinely get MLB hitters out. I think after last year the Twins don't trust Meyer to start, but want to see what he can do as a reliever for now. If Meyer can pitch well in relief now, he may start games a little later this season. Of course that also is dependant on how well Berrios pitches. If Berrios dominates from here on out it would be tough for even Meyer to get starts over Berrios as Berrios up to now is a more proven starting pitcher than Meyer is now.
  25. While Berrios won't save the season for the Twins, it is important to bring Berrios up as soon as possible. Bringing Berrios now is not like bringing up Buxton last year. While Berrios has dominated every level of the minor leagues, Buxton has really only dominated A ball and A+ ball, and has been good but not great in AA and AAA.
