  1. I think I've seen this movie before. The Twins sneak into the playoffs in a weak division, then get their brains beat out. In the process give up hundreds of games with more talented prospects. Let Cleveland make the big move and give up some of their future. Makes future Cleveland weaker as a result. Trade Santana, Dozier or whomever we don't include past 2018. Bring up more prospects, not simply sign some wornout vets. Continue to build toward a real playoff contender. At the end of 2018 the only current Twins with contracts are Hughes, Park and Castro and I don't think Hughes or Park will be here. Then with a young, rising team and money, go after some heavy free agents from the 2018 class. The possibility of signing with a rising team might interest free agents more than a 1 and done situation on some other teams. It 2019 it looks like our division challengers will be Cleveland for maybe 1 more year and a building White Sox. Talk to the cluhouse and fans and tell them what your plans are. Nothing worse then leaving everyone in the dark. I think getting the core team on board for a good future will keep them interested.
  2. It's great to see the power/speed combo numbers from Jermaine Palacios, as well as all the other categories he pops up in. I would like to see a few more walks in his numbers as he gets closer. Next summer hopefully he and Arreaz will be the double play combo pounding the ball at Chattanooga, although since injured this year, it may take Arreaz a little longer to get there.
  3. I hope the team is and has been shopping players like Santana, Dozier et al. I also hope Falvey and Levine are too smart to shop Rosario like some on this website are constantly preaching.
  4. I'm probably overthinking this, but who would be the veteran presence should they go ahead and trade Santana?
  5. Obviously a full blown youth movement in the rotation.
  6. Hopefully by this point the new Twins management has implemented a separate and distinct development plan for each pitcher in the system. I doubt that has anything to do with the major league teams won/loss record. We have had years of abject failure by Twins coaching staff and management in the devlopment of pitcher after pitcher brought to the majors. We can go back 20 years and see articles by national writers on the Twins failures to develop major league pitchers. I don't care if the three mentioned, Romero, Gonsalves or Jorge make it this year, next spring, next summer or whenever as long as it looks like they have a chance to succeed once they get here. Going back and forth between the majors and the minors may be part of the process, but coming up and getting destroyed shouldn't be. If our coaching and management staff has a short lease anywhere its not this years won/ loss record or even next years, but the ability to bring developed pitchers to the big league team who are ready to compete.
  7. Last year was Wander's first year. He got 30 plate appearances in the DSL, then was injured the rest of the year.
  8. When you hear 2nd round pick but number 85 rated draft prospect you think of this as a real reach albeit one that "helped" you get more bang on other draft choices. When you see second year of pitching and number 85 rated draft prospect you suddenly see a lot more ceiling.( rating by Baseball America draft preview)
  9. Twins standard 8 man bullpen choices (no particular order) Preferred (uh)- Kinzler, Rogers, Duffy, Boshers, Busenitz, Hildenberger Others (uhg) - Breslow, Belisle, Hughes, ?, ?, ?, Pressly, Tonkin Future (YEA) (2018 hopefully)- Rogers, Duffy, Busenitz, Hildenberger, May, Jay, Chargois, Burdi, Reed, Bard, Curtiss, More future than present. With our starters I don't see how Moliter won't burn out the reliable pen members this year. I don't see A trade for A relief pitcher making a sizable difference over the remaining 85 games this year. More likely a pickup of non injured arms.
  10. It looks like Hughes will get a shot this week and Pressly should get another shot next month. We don't know about Hughes, but when not over used Pressly was very good last year. By August maybe Curtiss and Reed can join the shuttle. Haley has also thrown an inning at Rookie Ball and will have to be dealt with. Besides Busenitz (who threw a no hit no walk inning last night) and Hildenbgerer still working in, we have 5 possible internal options for bullpen help. There are a couple of posibilities at Double A. The team has improved this year by giving internal options opportunities, I prefer this path as it still provides the most long term benefits. Hopefully by sometime next year we will add Jay, May, Chargois and Burdi to this group.
  11. Berrios, who probably came with more hype and talent(?) then the three listed here, made 36 starts over parts of 4 seasons at Triple A. His struggles at the major league level are fresh enough that it should give one pause at the thought of promoting directly form Double A. I am more long term development than many who post here but I could see bringing up all three in September after the minor league seasons ends. The purpose would be to help get over the jitters and not for any expectations of a major role on the team this year. Throw a couple innings out of the bullpen, evaluate and see what they need to work on more next year at Triple A. Usually command. since they all seem to have the stuff to make it. I believe next years rotation starts with Santana (unless traded) Berrios and Mejia. I think they will need at least 5 more starters to get through 2018 which should include Jorge, Gonzalves and Romero at some point earning their stripes.
  12. With the call up of Hildenberger and Busenitz earlier, Rochester is running rather thin in available support. Reed and Melotakis may make appearances later this year, but currently have only thrown 3 innings between them at Rochester. Probably won't see them for at least a month. Given a choice I would prefer to see these four take their lumps then other teams retreads. I expect to see Santiago, Pressly, Hughes and perhaps Tonkin again. Looks like a revolving door set up for the pitching staff in general for the rest of the year.
  13. When the year started, the Twins were expected to be a good team in 2019. No matter how this year turns out, that to me is still the target. We've waited 8 years for this team to be a consistently winning team. I would much rather see the Twins have a nice long run as playoff contenders starting in 2019 then sell off the upper level talent for a couple of short term rentals. As far as this year goes, only Sano as a hitter and Santana as a pitcher appear to be playing at and would be reliable pieces on a playoff team. The rest still need much more development time or never were pieces to be counted on. Even Sano and Santana have had their struggles for much of the past month. I think the real value of Santana, Dozier, Grossman, etc is the develop time they provide for more players in the minors to make it to the upper levels of the system and for the current young players on the roster to build into a real core on a playoff contender. If I'm a veteran on this team I expect to get traded. A strong playoff team not only has a good 25 man roster , but ready replacement level players in the upper minors. This team has neither. Watch the team develop and grow. This team has shown glimpses for the future and for the first time in years has provided some hope. Relax and enjoy the show.
  14. I'm a bit puzzled by Brian Navarreto making the allstar team. His offense does not appear to support his selection, is his defense really that good?
  15. Good pick. Scouting report shows him as the best position prospect in this years draft.Twins obviously need pitching, but I would rather have the every day player.
  16. I saw and remember the game but don't remember the Julie pose.
  17. Three 3 years from now Gore would be the same age as Wright is now. The raw talent with Gore seems higher than Wright and those 3 years of play against advanced competition with a higher caliber of coaching should develop a better pitcher by their age 22 seasons. Currently in their system, the Twins have multiple options for mid rotation to back of the rotation starters and I think they need to set their aim higher and take the risk.
  18. I would expect Kepler to lock down the number 3 hitter spot soon for at least the next 3 or 4 years.
  19. If this looks weak now, fast forward 6 months. Do they go to arb with Santiago or Gibson? Seeing Berrios start, do we expect Romero or Gonsalves to start quicker? I personally don't expect either before the middle of 2018 on a semi-regular basis. Following the expected trade of Santana, 2018 doesn't have much in the way of starting pitching in the picture. It doesn't look like the rotation picture begins to clear up much before 2019.
  20. Nice to see Diaz and Palacios continue their strong starts. Seems that they should be moved up a level in a few weeks.
  21. Without Santana, Santiago is the Twins best veteran starter. We saw him last night. With Santana, Santiago is the Twins second best veteran starter. Its possible that a team could go to the playoffs with a couple rookie starters as your second and third best pitchers but very unlikely. I can't believe that the new Twins management saw this as a playoff year and hope they are not ready to change the game plan because of 50 better than expected games, Pitching is not a strength for the Twins and there have been no injuries since the season started to weaken the game one staff.. To me the real value of Santana this year is to take pressure off the young starters. I believe the plan at the start of the year must have included trading Santana for the right price.
  22. I'd like to see that lineup with Sano at 3rd and Diaz at 1st. Probably 3 years away. Wade looks like he could take playing time away from Buxton. as well as Rosario. His consistent AB's will be hard to keep out of the lineup next year.
  23. It's not unusual for a pitcher coming off major surgery to not throw at top speed early in the spring or a veteran pitcher just working into shape.
  24. Going forward, the Twins need to spend as much time as possible this spring getting him ready to play major league shortstop.
