A Gonzo Look at the 2015 Minnesota Twins Coaching Staff
Paul Pleiss commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
I was in Miami during the Ozzie Guillen Fiasco... and let me tell you something, that was a rubberneckers dream. It was a train wreck between a couple of bullet trains housing several thousand passengers and several tanker cars full of jet fuel. F-U-N, FUN! But not in a good way. I don't think he fits the organizations idea of what a manager, a leader of men, is supposed to be. It would be fun watching Ozzie in Minnesota, becuase if nothing else, there'd be some great manager tirades, great quotes in the papers and after the games, but I just don't see it happening. Rusty Kuntz. I'm an adult. A real adult. And I know Rusty Kuntz is a real baseball person. But come on, I can't. I can't not smile to myself every time I read/hear his name. Maybe I'm not an adult afterall. Go Go Gonzo!- 7 comments

Article: Postseason Review: Aaron Hicks
Paul Pleiss replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I understand that a walk is not the same as a single, and that there is added value in producing hits, especially of the extra base kind. But I think people get hung up on having to have a slugger type in the corner OF spots. A guy who gets on base .340+ is valuable, especailly at the back of the lineup, a lineup that can then turn over for your big bats to knock around and home. I'm a Hicks homer, I know, I'm just don't know why people are giving up on him at 25. Yes, it's been a bit of a disaster the last two years... but he's improving. Trevor Plouffe was a disaster his first couple seasons. A lot of guys have struggled. I have always believed that Hicks has the tools to be a regular major league player, above average even, and I think he should get at least one more season to prove that, even if it means spending some more time at AAA. Of course, I also believed Joe Benson could be that same type of player, amazing tools, great hair, just never put it all together. So obviously my prospect analysis and projections are flawed, but I still think Hicks can and will figure it out at the MLB level. -
Article: Postseason Review: Aaron Hicks
Paul Pleiss replied to stringer bell's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why does Hicks need to hit, and not just walk? For him to live up to his potential and be a mid or top of the order bat he needs to hit, absolutely, but if he's an 8/9 hitter and just gets on base... that seems pretty valuable to me. yes, I want to see more from him with the stick, and on defense, but unless the Twins bring someone else in, I think it makes sense to play him everyday. Heck, maybe the Twins will get a manager that believes in the power of a platoon. Hicks could be a good fit for that type of guy. -

Minnesota Twins 2015 and Beyond: Non-tender, Extension, and Trade Candidates
Paul Pleiss commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
Almost all of this I love and support. except the idea that Sano will push out Plouffe by mid-season. I'm not sure Sano arrives in the big leagues before September. He very well could start the season with the Twins, but I think they'll be patient with him. Hopefully not Alex Meyer patient.- 3 comments

Postseason Review--Eduardo Escobar
Paul Pleiss commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
I was rooting for the Eddie400 all season long and was happy to see it come to pass. I don't know that SanDana can handle SS at the MLB level. That was the knock on him coming into 2014, and he didn't get many reps there after his promotion. I still don't know if he can do it. He has work to do offensively, as well. But this isn't about Sandana, this is about Eddie. What a great season. I too have doubts about his XBH potential going forward, and that lack of walks could be an issue, but he's young, and he made significant improvements in 2014. I think he'll do the same in 2015, all while holding down SS for the Twins. I don't know why Eduardo Nunez was given reps at SS over Eddie400. Maybe Gardy got them confused. Both could be servicable utilitiy guys, but I like Escobar over Nunez everyday. -
The MOST important element in Molly vs DM
Paul Pleiss commented on huhguy's blog entry in Blog huhguy
Oldgoat, if you like Dave Martinez because he was with Maddon, remember that Gene Glynn came from the Rays organization as well. I think Gene Glynn is getting far far too little attention as a real candidate to replace Gardy. -
funny stuff. "If I owned the Twins I would cut salary to league minimum and put the savings into a Swiss bank account. My money would be two vaults over from the money Carl Pohlad stashed there from 1994 to 2001." "If I owned the Twins I would make Target Field the first carbon neutral ballpark in the country. The grounds crew would use push mowers, the concessions would run on wind powered from Twins’ bats whiffing, and the lights would be powered with solar panels on the empty seats. I would also buy carbon offsets to power Brian Dozier’s hairdryer." Those were my favorites.

Trading Suzuki after we just signed him to that extension? I'm not sure that makes sense, especailly to dump him for "just adding some talent to the farm system." I think this team is a lot closer to contention, and that at some point you have to stop building for the future and start completing the roster for now. Maybe winning in 2015 is still out of the question, but 2016 and beyond this team should be at/near the top of the division and ready for a run at a championship. I can't get on board with sending Zuke away, but the rest of your ideas sound good to me. Herrmann behind the plate? No thanks. I like Escobar, I think he's still got some upside, and absolutely has value on the roster, but I could take it or leave it.

The fox sports girls are a fox creation, all over the nation fox sports local stations have their own fox sports girls. So it's not the Twins. But they are seemingly complicit. The title Fox Sports Women would go a long way in my view to changing the tone and responsibility for those young women at Fox.

2014 Post-mortem--Oswaldo Arcia
Paul Pleiss commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
I don't care if Arcia ever becomes even a league average defender. His bat is the reason he is in the show, and it's his bat that will keep him in RF, not his defense. If he can be Willingham-esque, and just avoid Delmon level defense, I'm happy. He's still so damn young. I look forward to his progress as he continues to get MLB at bats. He can crush baseballs. He owns the flag poles in RF.- 3 comments

Article: The Merits of Mientkiewicz and Molitor
Paul Pleiss replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Douggie Baseball, and we debated the merits of Doug or Paul taking over the reins of the team on last night's Talk to Contact. For me, I'll take the youth movement and Douggie B. I like the fire I keep hearing about in interviews with and about him from minor league guys. I like that even down at A-ball, he puts a big emphasis on winning and creating that winning atmosphere. The Twins need that. -
The subject of the FSNorth Girls came up in a post by PeanutsFromHeaven the other day from a post about hirting his mom to be the next Twins manager. http://twinsdaily.com/blog/68/entry-6101-an-unconventional-choice-for-the-next-twins-manager/ "•Hiring her would give young female fans something to aspire and relate to OTHER than being a Fox Sports North Girl. [Nothing wrong with the girls, but rather than having the broadcast focus on appearances and introductions, focusing on a woman's strategy, intelligence and involvement with the on-field action]" I responded in a comment "And I agree, in this day and age, should we really have women filling the roll of "girls" who have at least some expectation of being eye candy rather than reporters/broadcasters/journalists? Should we not also have FSNBoys? Would any man feel comfortable filling that description? I think it's great that Fox Sports are finding ways to get women into their broadcasts, but there has to be a less sexist way to do so than by objectifying them." So I put the topic out to you, Twins Territory, what are we to make of the FSNorth Girls in today's world? Are they taboo and holding women back, exploiting them for their looks, or are they a viable option to get young sports minded women a foot into a male dominated world? Maybe somewhere in between.

2014 Post-mortem--Kyle Gibson
Paul Pleiss commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
Not sure Gibson is a front of the rotation guy, not a true ace. He could be the Twins ace two years from now when Hughes is gone, but being a team's #1 and being a true #1 aren't necessarily the same thing. That being said, I agree that Gibson can and should improve. We saw him make strong strides from 2013 into 2014, and I except him to continue to improve in 2015. We may not see more GREAT starts from him, but hopefully he can turn some of his clunker starts into mediocre starts. If he can do that, we'll see vastly improved numbers from him after next season, and he'll have securely lived up to being a solid mid-rotation guy who flashes glimpses of something better. I'm just not convinced he'll ever become consistently elite.- 3 comments

Revisiting My 2014 Predictions
Paul Pleiss commented on Brad Swanson's blog entry in Kevin Slowey was Framed!
Pretty good prognostication Brad. I pretty much just avoid looking back at anything I did concerning predictions because I'm usually completly and totally wrong. You did well, you manned up and swallowed your pride and called yourself on yourbad picks adn congratulated yourself on the good ones. Well done. Come back to our podcast this off-season. We could use some help with our mailbag.- 1 comment

Goodbye, Gardy. Hello, Ozzie!
Paul Pleiss commented on GoGonzoJournal's blog entry in Minnesota Foul Play-by-play
Ozzie is a World Series winning manager. Say what you will about his questionable decisions off the field, but he's gotten it done. I'm not such an Ozzie backer that I'd call for him to get the job in Minnesota, as I lived in Miami during his less than sparking partial season in Miami, but he is a good manager. Just not soemone I want in Minnesota.- 8 comments

Be careful what you wish for...
Paul Pleiss commented on Fire Dan Gladden's blog entry in Blog Fire Dan Gladden
I don't see Liriano leaving as a financial move. He had been wildly inconsistent and more bad than good his last few years with the Twins. It wasn't money that caused Liriano, or Morneau for that matter, to be moved. Denard Span was traded for Alex Meyer. That's not a cost move, that's a move to get something the Twins were in dire need of, front of the rotation pitching. Denard Span had a very team friendly deal. he wasn't moved for salary, same goes for Revere. Cuddy and Torii, those were money decisions. -
An Unconventional Choice for the Next Twins Manager
Paul Pleiss commented on PeanutsFromHeaven's blog entry in Peanuts from Heaven
"She has better nicknames for players than most managers do, and can lead rally-chants like "Mientkiewicz, Mientkiewicz, Make me a Sandwich!"...which will be particularly useful if Douggie M. is her Bench coach." I'd eat that sandwich. Vote for Peanuts mom. And I agree, in this day and age, should we really have women filling the roll of "girls" who have at least some expectation of being eye candy rather than reporters/broadcasters/journalists? Should we not also have FSNBoys? Would any man feel comfortable filling that description? I think it's great that Fox Sports are finding ways to get women into their broadcasts, but there has to be a less sexist way to do so than by objectifying them. -
2014 Post-mortem--Trevor Plouffe
Paul Pleiss commented on stringer bell's blog entry in stringer bell's Blog
Sano still has a lot to prove before being given the keys to the Twins starting 3B job. His defensive skills have always been suspect, and while his bat will likely play at MLB, let's make sure he comes back healthy and find his stroke again before we get too excited. Plouffe did exactly what he needed to do to come back in 2015. Sano will be there, but he'll have to make a hugh splash if he wants to take Plouffe's job anytime before the ASG. Plouffe is a nice young player. I suspect he'll have a considerably better than swag master Danny Valencia, who also had some big platoon splitz. -

Article: Should the Twins Emulate the Royals?
Paul Pleiss replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
At some point you have to stop thinking long term and start thinking short term and take a team that is rebuilding to a team that is performing. If the team keeps building for the future, the future will never be more than a dream for next season.
