  1. I understand that you want Gardenhire gone. However, I think there are plenty of reasons that could be cited for letting Gardenhire go without beating this college graduation issue to death. Is it physically possible for him to go to the graduation and not miss any of the Seattle games? Assuming your research is correct, the answer is yes. However, I don't think it makes much sense for him to do that for several reasons. College graduations are a big deal and your family should be a top priority. Swooping in for the ceremony/luncheon and then leaving right away would send a pretty strong message to his daughter about where his priorities are. If that was my parent, I would rather they just didn't come at all. I am assuming that he has a certain number of personal days in his contract to use for these sorts of things and that this leave has the blessing of ownership. Right now, this team is unbelievably sucky and him not being there for a few days is not going to make a difference. In fact, him not being there might be beneficial in allowing him to take a step back and reevaluate. I do not think it sends any kind of bad message to the players because I think it shows them that he is not going to let tough times cloud his judgment and alter his priorities. Don't get me wrong. I think there is good chance that Gardenhire and his staff will be gone before this team once again becomes competitive. I just don't think this is something to be held against him.
  2. Hopefully this break gives Gardenhire a chance to take a step back and reevaluate the team and the season to this point. I agree that his priorities are right where they should be. College graduations are a big deal and if he were to just swoop in for the ceremony and then take off right after, that would send a pretty bad message to his daughter. At this point, Gardy can probably accomplish more by spending time away from the team, recharging himself, and analyzing future plans than rushing back to manage a crappy baseball team. What difference would him being there right now make anyway? The decisions that managers make during the game don't really make much of a difference unless you actually have a team that can compete. I am pretty sure that Ullger can handle walking out to take the ball from the pitcher in the 3rd or 4th inning with the team already down at least five runs.
  3. I definitely understand the way you feel. As much as I don't like to think this way, I don't see any other way than to get some fresh blood in here. There are just too many people who have worked together for too long in this organization for them to admit mistakes and adapt philosophies that aren't working. There is no doubt that more talent on the field will go a long way but there is also no denying that to truly contend down the road there is going to have to be some fresh ideas and leadership. Even when fielding a talented team, Gardenhire's teams have done progressively worse in the playoffs and whenever they play good teams in the regular season. Whether they admit it or not, you can see that his teams expect to lose when playing the best competition. It's sad because I think he is a good manager but throughout history good managers/coaches get let go all the time because their message is no longer getting through to the players and everyone is just too comfortable.
  4. "Who wants to be here?" That is a great question and one that seems more appropriate for a high school coach to ask his/her players when they are more concerned with hanging out with their friends, flirting, and deciding which party to go to after the game. It is just pathetic that this needs to be asked of a bunch of professional players. Desperate times require desperate measures and this might be the time for individual sit-downs with players to find out where their heads are at and issue some ultimatums.
  5. I think Diamond and DeVries both deserve call-ups soon. Liriano absolutely needs to go to the bullpen and I would agree with sending Hendriks back down. His first couple of starts were good but he has been horrible the last two times out. He is still very young and could really benefit from more time at AAA. Whether it's through trades or free agency, strengthening this rotation has got to be the top priority going forward. There is nothing that will decimate a team more than putrid starting pitching. It taxes the heck out of the bullpen and sucks the life out of the whole team when you are constantly down several runs in the early innings.
  6. I agree that we have a talent deficit right now but it is also clear that there is a systematic attitude/denial problem running throughout this clubhouse. Which one is more to blame? Probably the talent but not by as wide of a margin as you might think.
  7. Absolutely. A message needs to be sent that lackluster, ho-hum, uninspired play will not be tolerated. Guys need to start playing like they care or get someone in there that will.
  8. Should they make some moves? Yes, absolutely. Will they? I hope so, but lately a lot of their decisions haven't made a lot of sense to me. We'll see what happens. It should be interesting. But given the front office's stubborness with admitting mistakes, I could see them standing pat for a while.
  9. When things are going well, you just can't fathom the bottom falling out like this. It is tough to accept and you almost wonder if it is a bad dream.
  10. It looked good off Alexi's bat but it was not to be.
  11. At least they're battling their tails off....
  12. The second straight game with Casilla hitting in the two hole. Good to see Gardy rewarding Casilla for his good hitting lately.
  13. I will be very interested to see how Plouffe does at 3B tonight.
  14. I believe in 2006 against the Dodgers at home Mauer a 4 for 5 game followed by a 5 for 5 game. That was when he was flirting with .400 around the all-star break. I don't remember if he hit any homeruns or how many RBI he had, but it was definitely and awesome performance.
  15. I hope Hendriks bounces back from his poor start against the Red Sox.
  16. I would vote for Kirby's game in Milwaukee as well. I was 7 years old at the time and just beginning to fall in love with the Twins. Puckett's performance that weekend will always be etched into my memory. It was simply phenomenal. I would like to add another game to this list. In 2010 at Kansas City, Joe Mauer went 5 for 5 with a HR and 7 RBI. I would say a 5-hit game combined with that many RBI would be pretty rare.
  17. I would say straight four-seam fastball or a hanging breaking ball.
  18. I didn't realize that Hendriks was in Beloit just two years ago. He certainly made a quick progression through the system.
  19. It sounds like you have a pretty sweet situation. Are there many other families hosting players or do most of them have to get apartments? Good luck on the season!

    Fact Of The Day

I am surprised to learn that it is only 4 out of 8. I would have guessed more. What's worse is that I can only remember one outing this year where he came in and retired the side 1-2-3. Even when he is not allowing runs, he quite often allows multiple baserunners.
  21. That is simply not good at all.
  22. He has just been a beast. It would have been awesome to see him hit for the cycle on the first game from paternity leave!
  23. Very glad to see Guerra moving up to AAA. Hopefully he can continue to be successful as a reliever.
